Established on July 28th, 1960, by the late Dr. Jorge Augusto Correia, who served as the President, it has become an establishment known T for its quality, excellent service, and welcoming atmosphere. We sat down with Rui Mira, son of the original owners who opened café Mira all that time ago alongside Miguel Caçela who took the reigns in May 2022 to find out about the history of the Café and its future. For over half a century, the Café Mira has been owned by the same family, of the same name “Mira” and it has been passed down from generation to generation. The owners, along with their children, sons- in-law, and daughters-in-law, have worked year on year and decade on decade to enhance the establishment and create a brand of excellence, with great success. The café has seen countless events, from military life to weddings, baptisms, and birthdays, and it has played a vital role in the community, being a meeting point for locals and tourists alike. It has seen young “Tavirenses” grow up, find love, have children and those same children become happy customers whilst they grow up themselves. It has welcomed visitors from so many different countries, who have sent postcards thanking them for their warm welcome from all over the world. The stories these walls have heard and experienced is a wonderful thing to think about, so many souls have walked through its doors and shared happy moments, Rui told us the story of an American couple who came to the café in the 60´s, they took photographs of the café and later publicised them in a paper back in 8

the states sharing the story of Café Mira to an almost unimaginable place back in those days. In 2016, Katia and Luís who were friends of the family, took over the reigns and brought new ideas and concepts that honored the legacy of Café Mira until May 2022, when it was time to hand over the reins to a new generation. Miguel Caleça, a young entrepreneur and owner of three other restaurants in Tavira, is now at the helm and is dedicated to continuing the legacy of the Mira. He is staying true to its roots, maintaining a large selection of wines, great food, and excellent service. In addition to this, from April, Miguel has introduced a wide range of vegan options, catering to the growing demand for plant-based foods and delivery options through Uber Eats and Glovo will also be available, making it easier for customers to enjoy Café Mira’s delicious food from the comfort of their own homes. Rui would like to thank the loyal customers and friends who have supported the Café Mira over the years. If they said go out in the winter, we tried to find places with a lot of snow and the cowboys would be dressed differently. But you're telling a story, for example a cowboy is trying to get his horse back. His horse got loose and he's trying to get it back\". He explained that although photos were taken in many different locations, they all had to include specific elements; the hat, the lasso, the yellow slickers and a red, blue, white, or tan shirt. This is what gave the campaign its identity and made the photos instantly recognisable, even without any branding or text. On each shoot only real cowboys were used, the original being the 'face' of Marlboro, Darryl Winfield, who became like a father figure to Norm, in fact, he was the only person allowed to call him by his full name Norman. Norm also explained that each photograph had to be carefully planned, ensuring space was left for text and the gutter (middle of the spread) if appearing in a magazine. Today, it would take a huge team to shoot such complicated scenes with so many horses, Norm did it with just a small team of four. Today Norm is enjoying a slower pace of life, semi-retired, but he continues to take photos of animals and his passion remains capturing images of wild horses.
