Motors A beautifully restored Private car collection, in ESão Brás de Alportel ach time I drove past the Museum in São Brás de Alportel, I would see what I thought was a furniture shop, split in two, with classic cars on one side, and furniture on the other. I'd always promised myself I'd stop and have a look through the window... one day. Last month it happened. We parked the car outside the museum and walked back to the 'furniture' shop. With our noses pressed up against the window, we could see eight beautifully restored cars... all from different era's. A sign on the door said the entrance was around the corner, so we took ourselves round to a large doorway with a sign above for 'Fábrica Móveis Beirão'. A nervous peek inside revealed a large warehouse and wood yard. By chance, a member of the family who owns the premises was leaving the building. We asked about the cars and were introduced to Miguel, another family member. He gladly led us through a warren of warehouses and workshops, into the back door of the furniture shop. Miguel explained that the family business was originally a furniture factory producing furniture for most of the restaurants in the Algarve. The car restoration was just a hobby restorationfor Miguel and his father Fernando, www.eastalgarvemag.com 9

Places which began in the late 80's with the family's Austin 10 from the 1940's. The second was a Willys army jeep found by Fernando in a military 'graveyard'. In 1995 he rebuilt the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider which when they originally bought it, it was rotten, filled with fiberglass, and needed a completely new front end. Parts are sourced from connections and friends from all over the world. The engine, wheels and instrument panel for the HupMobile were all collected by a friend in Washington, U.S.A., the engine came all the way from Canada. This was done in exchange for threaded hub caps, which he collected. The private collection of cars are used regularly and kept in great shape. They are taken to rallies and are also available for events such as weddings. Each has its own story and the family are very happy to show people around their beautifully restored cars. The reclamation yard is seated on a hill, along the way up, the paths are lined with a plethora of goods and all for sale. From old tiles and building prefacings, to antique basins and enormous decorative pots which were once used as vats to store olive oil in the days of old. We look around and are convinced every single item we see has a story and one that will continue when the right person discovers it and sees its value. Total non-contact walking football is primarily aimed at the 65+ age group, although it is open to anyone with mobility issues or is recovering from injury. Mindful that some older players cannot afford to take risks with their ageing bodies, the introduction of a fresh variant of the popular sport will be totally non-contact with no tackling and players keeping a distance of at least 2 metres from the opponent with the WALKING ball. Sure enough, there it was, just a minute walk from the ferry landing. Pelaocpelse oMfoOslahicA-so Piecing together a new life in the East Algarve, www.eastalgarvemag.com here is the story of how this amazing mosaic shop in Olhão came to be Olhão is rich in lore and art, it has a charm to it that captivates and draws you in and compels you to stay, this is what the owners of Lavandas e Maravilhas tell us. Daria chose Olhão as a holiday destination when Anael was highly pregnant, and specifically for its mild, out of season climate and because everything needed was within 'waddling' distance. Before the holiday was over, they felt and knew it was to be their new home. Back in France, Daria, a Parisian, worked for the Comédie-Française theatre as an administrator. Anael, originally from the Ukraine also held an administrative role. The need to self express was always present and for many years the couple had a shared love for Mosaic making. Dario was taught the ins and outs by his mother at an early age and until their visit to Olhão it had been perfect as merely a hobby, satisfying the need to create with the hands. Little did they know all of this would change after their visit to Olhão. A fire was lit, the secure desk jobs were no longer enough, France no longer suited them and what was always a hobby would become their livelihood. Within two months, Dario went back to Olhão to buy an apartment. Soon after, and with a newborn baby, they would quit their jobs, sell their belongings and set up a Mosaic shop in the centre of Olhão. Plans to open in March 2020 were delayed until 04 May, as Covid struck. The new entrepreneurs were working so hard to open, they didn’t know 40

CHRISTINE WRIGHT; A GYM GEM! A truly inspiring story, Christine, we take our hat's off to you W hen a person clocks up ‘three score years and ten’ they tend to be thinking of slowing down. Not so, Tavira resident Christine RESTAURANTE Wright who in December was top of the class at Gymnasium FRANGANARIO Tavira having racked up 44 sessions of Pilates, BumbumUp+Abs, Pump, TRX and Step during the month. Christine’s aspiration of Tavira a sporting career started in her early teens when she represented London at the English Schools National Swimming Championships. She had hoped to become a Wren by following in her father’s footsteps who served in the Royal Navy during WW2. But in those days Wrens didn’t put to sea, so she set her sights on becoming a PE teacher. A two year spell in Hertfordshire was followed by 32 years at Eastbrook School in Dagenham, East London, where Christine rose to Head of Physical Education. Among the many thousand pupils she taught were footballers Tony Adams (Arsenal FC & England captain) and Paul Konchesky (West Ham, Fulham, Leicester and England). Christine and her husband retired to Tavira 17 years ago and she soon became a regular at the municipal pool where she loved powering her way through 50 lengths several times a week. Remarkably, all this has been achieved despite having had two replacement shoulders and a new hip courtesy of the marvellous Portuguese SNS (national health service).
