IntegumentaryFunctionThe Integumentary system protects the bodies inside. The skin protects your muscles. Like when you get acut the skin is the first one to be affected. The integumentary system also does not allow bacteria to seep itthe body. This system also help regulate your body temperature because when you sweet it is the bodytrying to cool down. The skin is the largest organ out of all the other organs because it stretches aroundyour body. The integumentary is made up of two layers. The epidermis is is on the outside and it has noblood vessels. The dermis is directly below and it allows the body to feel stimuli. The Integumentary systemis like the army because the army protects us from harmful things just the the integumentary system.Structures ● Skin- thin layer of of tissue that covers the body ● Sebaceous glands- secretes oily matter ● Sweat glands- a small gland that secretes sweat to cool the body ● Hair- protects the skin from letting bacterial in ● Nail- hard covering of the skin under the nailDiseases and Disorder ● Eczema- a non contagious inflammatory skin condition ● Cancer-a group of abnormal growing cellsHealth career ● Dermatologist-specializes in the diagnosis and cure of skin disorders. They can also study the functions of the skin and correlation between skin pathologies and disorders of other organs in the body ● Plastic surgeons-change the appearance or look of a part of a patient's body. They perform reconstructive surgeries of patients that have injuries in a severe accident or people who have birth defects Table of contents

Muscular systemFunctionsThe muscular system has many functions of the body. One function is it makes movement possible. You wouldnot be able to flex your arms or bend down if you did not have muscles. Another thing that the muscular systemis responsible for is to produce body heat. When muscles move or exercise they will heat up the body. Themuscular system helps move blood through veins via muscle contraction. It also allows other organs to function. The muscular system helps the digestive system to move food through out the system. This system allowssecretion to be released from ducts. The muscular system is like a engine torque because a engine torque is strength and your muscles allow you to bestrong.Structures ● Achilles tendon- connect calf muscle to heel ● Triceps- straightens the forearm ● Deltoid- attach the front ,side ,and rear of the shoulder ● Trapezius- moves head and shoulder blade ● Soleus- broad muscle in the lower calf that flexes the foot to point outwardDiseases and disorders ● Atherosclerosis-jont harddeing ● Fibromyalgia-A chronic disorder of unknown cause characterized by widespread aching pain, tender points, and fatigueHealth Career ● Rheumatologist- treats disorders involving inflammation of connective tissues in the muscles ● Neurologist-treats causes of paralysis and similar muscle disorders involving loss of function Table of contents

Skeletal SystemFunction O ne of the skeletal system's functions is to provide framework to support the body. If youdidn't have bones you would not be able to move. Standing, sitting ,and other daily life activitieswould not be possible without your bones ,that have joints,to allow you to move. Another function of thesystem is to protect your vital organs that are inside your body. Your rib cages are in front of your lungsand heart. Therefore keeping these organs in place instead of sliding around. The skeletal system alsostores mineral such as calcium for the body to keep your bones strong. The skeletal system is a placewhere the formation of blood cells occur. The skeleton system to the body is a frame to a picturebecause it holds it up.Structures ● Taurus- the heel of your foot ● Patella - allows your leg to bend ● Phalanges- allow your toes to move ● Ribs- protect the heart and lungs ● Temporal-protects the front of your brain ● Occipital- protects the bottom half of your brain ● Orbit-sockets for your eyesDiseases and Disorders ● Bursitis- inflammation of the fluid filled pad that are in joints ● Atherosclerosis- joint hardeningHealth Career ● Orthopedic surgeon- diagnoses and treats diseases, disorders ,and injuries to the bone, joints, and muscles ● Chiropractor-manually adjusts the positions of the bones Table of contents

NervousFunction The nervous system is basically neurons send messages to your brainlike if something is hot the neurons send a message saying get yourhands off. Neurons are the basic cell of the nervous system. Thedendrites receive impulses and conduct to the cell body. Axonconducts impulses away from the cell and to the brain. The terminalfibers lead impulses away from the axon into the synapse. The nervoussystem is like the postal workers who transfers messages from oneplace to another.Structures ● Nerves-receive and transmit messages to0 and from all parts of the body ● Dendrites- receive impulses and conduct to the cell body ● Axon-conducts impulses away from the cell ● Brain- coordinates all activities of the body by receiving and transmitting messages through the body ● Pons-where the nerves cross over ● Hypothalamus- controls hunger, thirst, sleep, and emotions ● Cerebellum- coordination and balance ● Spinal cord- transmits nerve impulses between the brain, libs, and lower part of the body ● Frontal lobe- controls motor functionsDiseases and Disorders ● Alzheimer's Disease- group of disorders associated with the degenerative changes in the brain structure that lead to progressive memory loss, impaired cognition, and personality changes ● Parkinson's Diseases- chronic degenerative CNS disorder Table of contents

Healthcare Careers ● Anesthesiologist-physician trained in anesthesia and perioperative medicine ● Neurosurgeon- A surgeon that performs surgeries on the brain Table of contents

Special sensesFunctionThe special senses consist of hearing and seeing. The eyes function as the receptor organ to collect the sense ofsight. When you look at something your eye sends the message to the brain through the optic nerve. The ears arethe receptor organ to sense sound and help maintain balance. The sound goes from the outer ear to the mid ear.The mid ear then sends the sound waves to the inner ear. The inner ear receives the sound vibrations andtransmits them to the brain through the auditory nerve. The special senses are like a lighthouse because it allowsyou to simses what's in front of you and where you are.Structures ● Eye- receptor organ for the sense of sight ● Adnexa of the eye- accessory structure that provides external protection and allows the eyes to move ● Eyebrow-prevent foreign objects from getting into the eye ● Lacrimal apparatus- removes tears ● Lens- focuses rays of light on the retina ● Retina- converts light images into electrical impulses ● Ears- receptor organ for the sense of hearing and helps maintain balance ● Middle ear- transmits sound waves to the inner ear ● Inner ear- receives sound vibrations and transmits them to the brain ● Outer ear- transmits sound waves to the middle earDiseases and Disorders ● Vertigo- liquid in the ear make a person dizzy and have a loss of balance ● Ear infection-inflammation of the inner, middle, or outer earHealthcare career ● Otolaryngologist- specializes in the problems of the ear ● Ophthalmologist- specializes in the sight of the eye Table of contents

Cardiovascular SystemFunctionThe circulatory system is knows as the transportation system. This system includes the heartblood and veins. The heart pumps the blood and the vessels carry it around the body. The bloodtransportation carries nutrients and oxygen to all the body tissues. Then it picks up thecellular waste products to be transported to the appointed organs to be eliminated from thebody. The blood cells that are in this system also play a role an important role in the immune andendocrine system. The heart is like a highway to a city because the blood travels to places andback to the heart constantly.Structures ● Heart-pumps blood through the body ● Blood vessel- transports blood ● Blood- removes waste from the body ● Veins-carries blood through the body ● Arteries-carry blood from the heart ● Capillaries- where gas exchange occurs ● Plasma- liquid portion of the blood makes up 55% of itDiseases and Disorder ● Myocardial infarction- heart attack resulting from occlusion of a coronary artery resulting in a infarct of the affected myocardium ● Congestive heart failure- a syndrome in which the heart is unable to pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs for oxygenHealthcare careers ● Perfusionist-operates a heart-lung machine during coronary bypass surgery ● Phlebotomist-takes patiences blood samples and prepares them for testing Table of contents

Respiratory systemFunctionThe respiratory system allows you to inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide.Whenthe respiratory system brings the air into the body it transports the air into thebloodstream to the cells of the body. The respiratory system expels waste productsthat have been returned to the lungs by the blood. This helps out a whole bunch ofsystems that have to do with getting rid of waste products. Also the respiratorysystem produces the airflow through the larynx that makes speech happen. Therespiratory system is like the pump that makes your tires fill with air. As it inflatesthe tires with air so does the respiratory system with your lungs.Structure ● Lung-deflates band inflates with air during respiration ● Laryngopharynx- the voice box ● Alveoli- where gas exchange occurs ● Epiglottis- closes off the larynx during swallowing ● Trachea- helps hold the esophagus in place ● Diaphragm- contracts and relaxing of this muscle makes breathing happenDiseases and Disorders ● Cystic Fibrosis- genetic disorder lungs are clogged with large quantities of abnormal thick mucus ● Influenza-acute highly contagious viral infection of the respiratory tractHealthcare ● Respiratory therapist- tears patients with heart or lung problems by administering oxygen, gas, or aerosol medications under a physician's orders ● Respiratory therapy technician- Works under the supervision of the RT to administer respiratory treatment Table of contents

Digestive systemFunctionThe Digestive system is how our bodies use food to get energy. The system goalis to intakes food and digest them. While it does this the digestive systemabsorbs nutrients from the food. After is uses the food that you eat it preparesand eliminates the solid waste that your body does not need. When you eatsomething your teeth break it down. Then it travels down your esophagus. When the broken pieces are in the stomach it starts the churning processwhich unties the stomach acid. The next place it goes is to the small intestinewhere the nutrients is absorbed. After that whatever waste is left goes into thelarge intestine. The waste waits there to be secreted from the body. Thedigestive system is like a wood for a campfire because you need energy to keepit going.Structure ● Esophagus- leads the food down the stomach from the larynx ● Stomach- churns the food so the stomach acid breaks it down ● Sublining glands- moses food to go down easier ● Lips- important to hold in food while in mouth ● Teeth- breaks down food ● Gallbladder-stores and converts bile for use ● Large intestine- waste products are processed for preparation to be excreted ● Small intestine- collects nutrients from the foodDiseases and Disorders ● IBS-(irritable bowel syndrome) common with condition of unknown cause with symptoms of cramping, pain, constipation ,or diarrhea ● IBD-(inflammatory bowel disease) general term for disease that cause inflammation of the intestineHealth Care ● Dental assistant- works under the supervision of a dentist is licensed to remove stains and deposits from the teeth Table of contents

● Sanitarian- performs environmental health inspections and encourages compliance with public standards of food safety Table of contents

Urinary systemFunctionThe Urinary system is used to turn unusable liquids into urine for the body to expel of. It also keeps abalance of salts and other substances in the blood. The kidneys ,that is a major structure in this system, remove urea from the blood through by filtering through nephrons. This system helps our bodies maintainhomoeostasis to keep us healthy. Another responsibility the urinary system has it to maintain electrolyteconnection. The urinary system is like the trash trucks because it comes to collect waste and secrete it fromthe body.Structure ● Adrenal gland- regulate electrolyte levels ● Right Kidney- filter blood ntov remove waste ● Left Kidney- removes excessive water to maintain the fluid volume when the body ● Ureters- transport urine from the kidneys to the bladder ● Urethra-transport urine from the bladder through the urethral canal ● Urinary bladder- stores urine until it is excretedDiseases and Disorders ● Nephritis- inflammation of the kidney ● Renal Colic- pain caused by blockage of the kidney during a kidney stone.Health care ● Dialysis technician- operates the hemodialysis machine provides emotional support for diseased patients ● Urology- provides care and information to patients with urinary and kidney problems Table of contents

Reproductive systemFunction The reproductive system populates the world. When the sperm ofa male connects with the ovum of a women during intercouse itcreates a fetus. The testicles is where the sperm is created forthe males and it travels into the penis. During intercoure thesprem is relaesd into the vagaina that then travles to thefallopian tube to meet the ova. The women have a ova that islatched onto the fallopian tube and to wait there until spermcomes into contact with it. If sperm never comes then women havewhat is called a period. The reproductive system is like astore. People come in and out buying things and the money keepsthe store in business and eventually the store can multiply themore money it gains.Structure ● Penis- used for sexual intercouse amd reprodution ● Testicles-produce sperm and the male hormones testosterone. ● Ovaries- produce ova and female hormones ● Fallopian tubes- catches mature ova and provides the site for fertilization also transports ova to the uterus ● Uterus- protects and supports the developing child ● Vagina-used for sexual intercousreHealth care ● Midwife- deliver babies outside the hospital setting ● Gynecologist- treat problems of the female reproductive system Table of contents
