3 Arithmetic I. NUMBER SERIES Important Points In these questions, a number series is given and you are asked to either insert a missing number or find the one that does not follow the pattern of the series. Following are some series that help boost your skills in solving questions on number series. Classification of Series 1. Increasing Series: In increasing series, next term is obtained by adding or multiplying any number in the previous term. For example, Consider the series 3, 7, 11, 15, 19, ... Here, in this series, every term is obtained by adding ‘4’ in the previous term. i.e., 3 + 4 = 7, 7 + 4 = 11, 11 + 4 = 15, 15 + 4 = 19 2. Decreasing Series: In decreasing series, next term is obtained by subtracting or dividing previous term by any number e.g., consider the series 100, 97, 94, 91, ... Here, in this series, every next term is obtained by subtracting 3 from previous term. i.e., 100 – 3 = 97, 97 – 3 = 94, 94 – 3 = 91 Types of Series 1. Alphabetic Series: The series in which particular pattern is followed in alphabets. For example: P, R, T, V, X, ... The series of alternate alphabets. 2. Numerical Series: The series in which particular pattern is followed in numbers. For example: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, ... Series of squares of natural numbers. 3. Alphanumeric Series: The series of combination of alphabets and numbers following a particular pattern. For example: F2, E4, D8, C16, B32, ... The series of decreasing alphabets and twice the previous number. 117
