He cried out in pain,“Millie, help me! I can’t get my paws out of it.” Millie helped Duke pull the shoe out.“Thanks for helping me, my friend,” said Duke. Just then Millie saw a white plastic cup. “I wonder if this tastes good,” she thought to herself and started eating it. Chomp, Chomp... Just then Duke called out,“Don’t eat that, Millie. It could be dangerous.” “I think you are right.Aaaah! My stomach hurts now. Let’s go home, Duke,” said Millie crying in pain. 74

I stepped on a sharp piece of broken glass and now my paw is bleeding.” As soon as Millie made her way to help Duke, her feet got glued to something sticky lying on the road, “Oh dear, I stamped on a bubble gum, which someone threw on the road.” Both the friends were upset and angry now. They were crying when Penny, the Pigeon, heard them. She called out, “Hello friends! What’s wrong? Are you hurt?” Duke and Millie both said together,“Yes, we are.We got hurt by all the trash that people have thrown around here. People are so careless!” “I am sorry that you are hurt. Sometimes people are not careful and they simply throw their trash anywhere. Unwanted things like broken windows or old furniture and other things like old bottles, cans, paper, plastics and many other things make it a dangerous place for all.Trash does not belong here,” said Penny. “Where does trash belong to then?” asked Millie. “All unwanted things that we call trash belong to the trash-cans.Throwing trash on the roads and in our neighbourhood is littering. Littering can be dangerous to plants, animals and people,” Penny said wisely. “I agree. Look how we got hurt and now we have learned that it is not safe for us to play where people have littered and left their trash,” said Duke. 75

With this activity, children will have a sense of responsibility and awareness. Ask: Do you know where we should put wrappers? When we are done with wrappers, they belong to a trash-can. When wrappers and other garbage are thrown on the ground, instead of being put into the trash-can, it is called litter. Select an area on the school ground where students can collect (or observe) litter. If your school ground is litter-free, beforehand collect a pile of litter and keep it in a bag.
