The first-ever York Fringe Festival is taking place Wednesday, August 22 through Sunday, August 26, 2018 in tandem with the YorkFest Fine Arts Festival. Providing a platform for innovative live arts in the City of York, the York Fringe Festival is a juried performing arts festival open to local and regional artists of all ages. Participants will present live performances in theatre, dance, music, spoken word, video and more at various venues across York City, spanning from original works to innovative twists on the classics. Fringe Festivals find their roots in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, which was founded when eight theatre companies turned up uninvited to the inaugural Edinburgh International Festival in 1947. With the “official” festival using the city’s major venues, these companies took over smaller, alternative venues for their productions, on the “fringe” of the festival. The York Fringe Festival is part of the International Fringe movement. The York Fringe aims to foster accessibility, inclusiveness and creativity in the live arts while keeping costs low for audiences and performers. Family Friendliness Nope 2018 YORKFEST SILENT DISCO Silent disco is a unique way of experiencing live music – Guests wear wireless headphones and a silent atmosphere instantly transforms into a high energy musical performance. With two separate DJs playing simultaneously, guests can tailor the experience to their tastes by choosing which audio channel they want to listen to, switching back and forth as often as they like.
