Tikkun Olam Given the events of last year and the continuing effects of the pandemic, members of our wider Essex County community are in need. The lines at food pantries are too long and too many children are going without basic necessities. This past season, the TBJ lobby was filled as our community spent November and December focused on collecting gifts, food, and other items to bring a bit of holiday cheer to our neighbors. As a community, we collected: • 100 frozen turkeys for Thanksgiving donated to IFPO • 100 bags of food for Thanksgiving donated to IFPO • A bin full of coats, hats, gloves and scarves for the Thirteenth Avenue School in Newark • A bin full of feminine products for the I Support the Girls organization with our Womens Association • 200 lunches donated to Bridges Outreach, packed by our teens • Gifts for 90 children at the New Community Center in Newark • Over 10 huge bags of toys for Northstar Charter and KIPP schools in Newark • 8 cars full of stocking stuffers and food bags for IFPO Also: Our Community Support Fund fed over 500 doctors, nurses, and staff in the COVID Unity and Emergency Departments at St. Barnabas Medical Center. We are so proud of the TBJ community and look forward to many more opportunities for Tikkun Olam as the year continues. If you are interested in becoming involved with our tikkun olam efforts, or in helping to coordinate Mitzvah Day, please let us know at [email protected]. TBJ Monthly Food Drive Starting this February, we will host a monthly food drive to contribute to the efforts of the Interfaith Food Pantry of the Oranges and offer a regular opportunity for the TBJ community to give back to those in need. We will need your help to pack bags and drop-off the donations. Making dinner for a friend who is sick, talking kindly about people with whom we disagree and expressing gratitude towards each other has a positive impact on children. 3. Cherish our Relationships: Positive relationships with others is the single most important predictor of well-being and satis- faction that we have in our lives. Although our physical connec- tions with others may be fraught with very legitimate anxiety and stress right now, the value of these relationships remains paramount. Investing our spiritual energy into our relationships yields high dividends in enhancing our hope and well-being. One way to do this at home is through reading. Our classrooms are full of inspiring children’s literature with messages of hope and resilience. Robust and meaningful conversations take place as we read through the stories, identify problems, discuss solutions, explore character strengths and virtues and teach students how to “spot strengths” in the characters. Read with your children and talk about their favorite hero or character and why. Discuss how that character shows hope and determination. Keeping Hope Alive in Our Young Children: A study in the Journal of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology suggests that being hopeful is key to fostering resilience in young children. Religious Education Center As the fall season continued and our students welcomed the start of a very mild winter, we were blessed with good weather and gorgeous sunsets. Continuing to deepen our understanding of character strengths through an integrated Hebrew and Judaics curriculum, students in grades K-12 had many opportunities to thrive this season! Hybrid Learning Models We continue to offer many options to meet the needs of our learners and their families during this most unusual year for youth education. As the sunset provided a magnificent backdrop for evening tefillah (prayer) education, learners uplifted their creativity and appreciation for beauty and excellence. Sharing Mah Rabu (How Great!) Moments, we acknowledged and appreciated the beauty and nature surrounding our outdoor learning center. Onsite students in our hybrid model danced with their peers on Zoom, celebrating a shared love of learning. A Season for Hope and Gratitude We engaged the strengths of gratitude, hope, and social intelligence through the lens of Jewish values, then participated in a special project that brought joy to fellow TBJ members. Students in our K-3 program talked about things for which they are most thankful and made Thanksgiving cards to connect with their TBJ family, reminding us through all these challenges, we will always be TBJ Together! Physically Distant but Socially Connected TBJ Teens joined Rabbi Leah to help pack the Chanukah gifts that were delivered to our TBJ families. Teens gathered on a breezy December morning to feed those in need, preparing 200 sustainable lunch bags for Bridges Outreach. We thank all our volunteers and those who donated to make this project possible. For more information on how your teen can join our next project, contact [email protected] or call 973-379-3177. Religious Education Center Family Programming–Bringing Families Together Over the past few months, we continue to feel the importance of creating opportunities for our TBJ families to come together. On a Shabbat morning in November, 22 of our wonderful families came to TBJ to participate in a 3rd - 6th grade Family Tikkun Olam Program. The Tikkun Olam programs have always attracted large numbers. During this unusual year, it was especially gratifying to know that so many families continue to seek opportunities to make a difference and participate. On November 21, 75 people gathered outside around the Sheslow Fountain Circle, working together, while maintaining social distance. With the sounds of Shabbat music being played by Matt Turk and the words of motivation being spoken by Rabbi Matt, our mission was much bigger than any other Family Tikkun Olam Program we had previously run. Together, we were to prepare 75 large boxes of food for families in need through the KIPP Community in Newark, NJ. Each box contained a roasted chicken, a salad, a fruit salad and a chocolate pudding pie. In addition, our families made cards for each individual family to accompany the food. With smiles on their faces, each family prepared a specific recipe. With the help of many staff and clergy members, the energy was so positive. We were all happy to be sharing the same space while helping our neighboring community. The KIPP families were deeply appreciative of the meals they received. Chanukah is a holiday where so many people from our community join together to celebrate. This year we ran a special Family Game Night led by Digital Dov which was met with rave reviews. Over 100 people joined our event where families answered trivia questions, participated in an at-home scavenger hunt and scored points in a Chanukah Kahoot. There was a lot of laughter and many smiles on the zoom screens as we joined together to enjoy some quality family and community time. Stay tuned for upcoming Family Programs. Thank you to all those who have contributed to our 2020-2021 Annual Giving Campaign. Now more than ever, we are grateful for your support! ~ Question about your giving?
