Religious Education Center Zest breeds zest. This year has started with so much ruach (spirit), you can feel it in the air! Here are a few powerful moments from this year so far: Informal youth program has returned this year with groups for all ages: TBJ Mini (K-2), TBJ Jr (3rd-5th gr), TBJ Tweens (6th-8th gr) and the return of TBJ Teens (9th-12th gr). Students bring their Zest to a tefillah (prayer) session in the outdoor chapel Students bring their Zest to a tefillah (prayer) session in the outdoor Families gathered for sukkah decorating (left), Shabbat in the sukkah (middle), and to prepare meals and gifts bags to donate to Brick Education Network (right). Beginning the Year with Family Programming and Smiles It was wonderful to have our first Family Kindergarten through 2nd Grade Shabbat of the year for Sukkot. Having families gather for a service then be in the sukkah to shake the lulav and etrog was a special way to begin the evening. Next our families had the chance to get to know one another by sharing a Shabbat dinner and making edible sukkahs. Two weeks later many families came to TBJ on a Shabbat morning to make a difference in the world. We partnered again with our friends at Brick Education Network based in Newark. Three of their staff members came to talk to our children about the important work they do, how to treat everyone with dignity, and the impact of our project. In under two hours, we made 72 sandwiches, 72 containers of fruit salad, 125 bags of trail mix, and 60 bags filled with toys and activities for children. They were delivered that very afternoon to a Brick Family Program at a pumpkin patch. Thank you to all of the children who really took the lead and to the parents for providing the items used to prepare the food. We look forward to seeing you in the coming months for additional family programs. 4 www.tbj.org/rec

Women’s Association The Women’s Association has been BuSy! We hosted our kick-off book event with author Zibby Owens. Zibby spoke about her most recent memoir, Bookends, and shared stories about her Jewish upbringing and the twists and turns that shaped her inspiring career. Julie Cohen hosted lunch at her beautiful home and the event was enjoyed by all. We had our first Baking Series Event with Amy Schottland who taught us how to make Jewish holiday classics: mandel bread and rugelach. Amy set up the TBJ kitchen for a cooking class and the event sold out immediately, with a wait list – it was a delicious and fun morning. Over 60 women attended our fall cocktails and light bites at Orange Lawn. Our second book talk, discussing The Red Tent, was also led by Amy Schottland. Some had read the book a long time ago and some had just read it for the first time. We had a thought-provoking discussion (along with dates, figs, and homemade Middle Eastern honey cake from the book!). We are reading The Dovekeeper next. Stay tuned for more details. The annual Holiday Boutique, chaired by Alison Kramer and Marisa Grossberg, kicked off on a Wednesday evening and ran all day Thursday. Favorite returning vendors and new sellers from near and far filled Steiner Hall. The event was a huge success! Emily Schonbraun and Sara Singer, WA Philanthropy Chairs, partnered with the IFPO to sponsor a temple-wide Thanksgiving food drive. Bags were filled with food for families to have a full Thanksgiving dinner. Julie Feldman and Rebecca Wood have been busy preparing and stuffing Chanukah bags with the help of so many volunteers, to be distributed to all temple members with favorite holiday essentials. Mahjong/Canasta coming this winter. Join us! Erin Schonbraun [email protected] Clergy & Administrative Team – 973-379-1555 Education Team – 973-379-3177 Abra P.
