Religious Education Center “The knowledge that every day there is something more to learn, something higher to reach for, something new to make for others, makes each day infinitely precious.”— Uta Hagen In the Religious Education Center, we strive each day for excellence, and seek beauty in life’s moments, big and small. For example, during our weekly tefillah (prayer), with the words of Yotzer Or we give thanks for the numerous gifts and beauty in Creation, and for light, so we can see and be seen. Learners take this opportunity to share the “mah rabu” moments that give us pause. It’s like an elevated “Awesome!” that recognizes the uniqueness of each living thing and each of our experiences. Appreciation of beauty and excellence is a strength we dial up each time our learners come together. We can’t wait to continue to learn and grow with our TBJ families in the upcoming program year. –Abra P. Family Programs It!was wonderful having so many people come to our Family Programs this spring. First up was the Challah Bake Shabbat in March where w!e brought in Shabbat together and made beautiful challot with all kinds of toppings. Our TBJ families really stepped up and made a difference in the month of April. Over 45 people attended our new K-2 Tikkun Olam program. One hundred activity bags were put together for children in need, made up of coloring books, crayons, fidgets, small toys, and a personal card. In addition, 72 lunch bags were made. This food was given out though MEND to local food pantries in Newark. Later in April, 3-6 Grade families came together for a Tikkun Olam program supporting Toni’s Kitchen in Montclair. While listening to Shabbat music and bringing in Shabbat together, it was powerful to hear our children talking about how much they enjoyed having the opportunity to help. Large platters of fruit salad, trays of lasagna, and brownies were delivered to Montclair. Our neighboring communities were so appreciative. Thank you for making a difference and participating in Family Programs this year! —Tammy Anagnostis, Family Educator, [email protected] 7

Brotherhood The Brotherhood had a robust calendar of events in 2023. Plans are in the works for our annual golf outing and poker We were fortunate to have an opportunity, as with all night for charity. Dates have not been set, but we will keep congregants, to help write the Howard J. Cooperman Torah, everyone apprised. As noted previously, the Brotherhood dedicated by the Cooperman Family, in honor of TBJ’s 175th continues to grow and expand its outreach. anniversary. It was quite a spiritual and uplifting event for all those who participated. Women’s Association The Women’s Association had an amazing and busy year! In April, we got together to read and discuss Geraldine Brooks’ People of the Book. We had a lovely and thought-provoking discussion (over coffee and homemade mandel bread) at Amy Schottland’s house. Then as a follow-up to our very well received Wellness Seminar with Dr. Nancy Simpkins, we went on our first guided hike through the South Mountain Reservation. TBJ’s own Gail Waimon led nearly 20 of us on a beautiful and challenging five-mile hike on a sunny spring morning. Everyone loved it and many have already asked to do it again soon! And back by popular demand...Mah Jongg & Muffins! Tables of 4 filled the TBJ lobby as members mingled and sipped coffee while playing “mahj”. Samantha Weinberg and Jamie Greenberg organized a great event! At the end of April, Dr. Simpkins led a very important and informative panel, Hereditary Cancer Risk in the Jewish Community: An Update on What Families Need to Know. BRCA genetic counselors from Penn Medicine’s Basser Center traveled from Philly to TBJ to join our friends Dani Nodelman and Becca Cossin on this vital panel discussion. A big thanks to Michele Kaplan for helping put this event together. We all learned so much! As the school year wrapped up, we had our last book discussion on A Bintel Brief at Amy Schottland’s home. Last but not least, our much-awaited Spring Luncheon took place! We welcomed our esteemed guest speaker, Peter Alexander, from NBC News. Peter is an Emmy Award-winning journalist and Chief White House Correspondent for NBC. It was a fabulous event to bring our successful and fun year to a close. Thank you all for participating and helping to make my first year as Women’s Association President so gratifying and fulfilling. I have loved meeting so many new faces and baking, reading, hiking, listening and spending time with all of you! We will be meeting over the summer with our past presidents and board members to begin planning another great year ahead - see you in September! —Erin Schonbraun, [email protected] Clergy & Administrative Team – 973-379-1555 Education Team – 973-379-3177 Rabbi Matthew D.
