Religious Education Center We were recently reminded of lessons March and April were filled with so many of our wonderful about Jewish identity and Jewish TBJ families. Between the Purim Carnival and Family responsibility from Natan Sharansky: Programs, being together was uplifting for all of us. “When I was growing up in Ukraine, On Friday, March 18, 3rd-6th Grade families gathered to in Donetsk, there were many nations enjoy a Shabbat service followed by learning about the and nationalities. There were those history of challah. Families then had the opportunity to with identity papers that read take dough and turn it into beautifully decorated challot. This was not so important we enjoyed Shabbat dinner together. since there was not much difference between them. The Helping those in need is a value that we pride ourselves single designation that stood out was 'Jew.' If that was written on at TBJ. So many children came with their parents on as your identity, it was as if you had a disease. We knew Saturday, March 26, to prepare food for our 3rd-6th Grade nothing about Judaism. There was nothing significant Tikkun Olam Program with Toni’s Kitchen, a soup kitchen about our Jewish identity other than the anti-Semitism, in Montclair that serves the local community. After singing hatred, and discriminatory treatment we experienced Shabbat tunes and discussing food insecurity, families began because of it. When it came to a university application, preparing soup, lasagna, salads and chocolate pudding pies for example, no one tried to change his designation from for those in need. It was a powerful morning of making a 'Russian' to 'Ukrainian' because it did not matter. All were thousands of people standing at the borders of Ukraine wonderful Shabbats to share together this spring. trying to escape. They are standing there day and night ~Tammy Anagnostis, Family Educator, tanagnostis@tbj.org and there is only one word that can help them get out: 'Jew.' If you are a Jew, there are Jews outside who care about and are waiting for you. There is someone on the other side of the border who is searching for you. Your chances of leaving are excellent. The world has changed. When I was a child, 'Jew' was an unfortunate designation. No one envied us. But today on the Ukrainian border, identifying as a Jew is a most fortunate circumstance. It describes those who have a place to go, where their family, an entire nation, is waiting for them on the other side.\" For the last several months, our students in 5th and 6th grades have been studying the value, “Kol Yisrael erevim, zeh ba zeh; all Jews are responsible for one another.” We have done this through the generosity of our friends at Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ and the Aidekman Family, who provided each of our students with a copy of the book, Natan Sharansky: Freedom Fighters for Soviet Jews. It is a high action story of a true hero who braved jail, separation from his family, and other hardships to free the Jews of the Soviet Union, furthering the world’s struggle for human rights. We hope that this true-life story will continue to inspire our learners to consider the role they can play in our ongoing mutual responsibility, zeh ba zeh, one for the other. ~ Abra P. Women’s Association This spring, our Women’s Association gathered for Book Club at a local coffee shop to discuss Where it All Lands and had a dynamic Q&A with the author herself, Jennie Wexler. Our Challah Bake event also included Shabbat cookie decorating, and we all brought home delicious homemade challahs, some with sweet toppings! Coming up on May 19th is our highly anticipated Spring Luncheon featuring guest speaker Jill Kargman. We can’t wait to see you there! ~Gloria Newman, President gloriarnewman@gmail.com Clergy & Administrative Team – 973-379-1555 Our Education Team – 973-379-3177 Rabbi Matthew D.
