From Your Clergy The Start of a New Year; And the Turning of a New Page: high holy Days 5783 It would be an understatement to say that we have not been together enough over the past two and a half years. We pray for so many different reasons, on so many different levels that we will be together in great numbers this coming Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. We, of course, respect your decisions in terms of how your family continues to navigate the Pandemic, but with love and safety, we will be here to greet you with a hug or a fist bump! As I am sure many of you realize, we have been using the same prayer book, Gates of Repentance, for at least three plus decades. The prayer book certainly was appropriate for its time, but as you and we all know, it ran its course. During the Pandemic, our clergy team took on the task of literally writing our own Holy Day prayer book, concentrating specifically on the themes of these past couple of tumultuous years. We will admit to being able prayer leaders, but we are not profes- sional liturgical writers. And so, we are serendipitous in our timing that our Reform Movement has written a new Holy Day Prayer Book, now accurately more than five years ago - to match our day and age, with spiritual relevancy and resonance. We trial-ran the prayer book on the Yom Kippur before the Pandemic and received, on the whole, excellent feedback. Below are perspectives from each of your clergy on its history, usage, and spiritual evolution. A Prayer Book Transformations As a Snapshot of Our Times Over Generations RABBI MATThEW D. WITH GRATITUDE The High Holy Days are a time for reflection, a time to consider the journey that we as a community have taken over the past year. As we emerge from a challenging few years, I am immensely grateful to lead this remarkable TBJ community, who cares for and supports each other so beautifully. Over the course of 2018 to 2020, many members of our community invested in our temple and programming at a level above and beyond their generous annual support to meet the ever-changing needs of our community. We are proud to share that these investments have enabled us to realize our vision of a more versatile prayer experience, enhanced programming, and operational growth. The renovations to our Milton & Harriet Perlmutter Family Chapel and flexible seating in our indoor chapel allowed us to continue to enhance our services throughout the pandemic. In addition, we were able to fund important curriculum updates focused on positive psychology and unique adult programming. The hybrid education space of our Ho man Family Library and the Florin Family Field provided expanded opportunities for growth and learning for members of all ages. During a time of uncertainty, several congregants stepped up and sustained our annual operations through increased support that allowed us to gracefully navigate the unpredictable and ongoing complexity of the pandemic. We are especially grateful to Leon and Toby Cooperman for sponsoring a generous annual giving match challenge that resulted in a significant increase in annual operational funds. Their matching fund and the increased participation of our community have o ered us the opportunity to secure our stability in uncertain times and grow our program o erings. When I reflect on these investments by our community members, I feel so blessed to bear witness to the impact we have been able to make every single day. Our members devotedly share in each other’s Jewish journey and as we move into another holiday season, I am filled with inspiration and deep thanks for this community. Rabbi Matthew D. Women’s Association As summer starts to wind down, I am so excited to step into the role of incoming Women’s Association President. I have been an active member of TBJ since we moved from Manhattan to Short Hills, and our oldest child started nursery school in the ECC Transitions Program. My husband David and I have since sent all three of our children (Lily, Sam & Harrison) to TBJ pre-school and camp, and last October our daughter was called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah. I have always been eager to take on leadership roles at the temple, and most notably served as one of the ECC Parent’s Association Presidents. A big thank you to Gloria Newman for all of her hard work over this past year. It was a challenging year at times with Covid, but Gloria graciously led the Women’s Association through it with many successful, well-attended events! The culmination of the year was the Spring Luncheon in May, attended by 225 women. Jill Kargman was a dynamic speaker who gave us a much-needed laugh, and her talk was followed by a lovely lunch, enjoyed by all! This past month, I hosted our annual WA Board Summer Luncheon & Introductory Planning meeting at Orange Lawn Tennis Club. Together we brainstormed ideas for the year such as Girls Night Out, Book Clubs with guest authors, Jewish Holiday & Challah Bakes, a new Canasta event to go along with everyone's favorite Mahjongg & Muffins. We can’t wait to get started! Save the date for our New Member Brunch on September 22 hosted by Susie Polow at her home. And our popular Fall Boutique will be November 16-17. Please feel free to reach out to me with any ideas you may have. Hope to see you all soon. Enjoy the rest of your summer! Fefferman began focusing on her long-lost art. She started working in pastels, a medium which she had enjoyed in earlier years. In 2017, she began working with teacher Christina Debarry. Fefferman loves the pastel medium for its beauty of color variations and for its sense of immediacy. She loves to include architectural elements in most of her paintings, finding reflec- tions and life on the street: the most fascinating of subjects. Kunken began her artistic career in 2004 at The Stevenson Academy of Fine Arts in Oyster Bay, NY. There she studied with acclaimed artist, Attila Hejja and learned realistic paint- ing techniques that had been passed down to him from Nor- man Rockwell.
