2003-114 Wednesday, April 05, 2017 Photograph and Digital Image © Princeton University Art Museum. Not for reproduction or publication. Primary Title: Fragment of a Greek epitaph Classification: Architectural Elements Period: Early Byzantine Date Label: 6th – 9th century A.D. Medium: Grayish-white marble Description: Traces of blue and red paint remain in the letters. Line 1 may be restored (see unicode), which gives a reasonably sure guide to the original width of the inscription, since (see unicode) stands at the beginning of line 2. Epitaphs beginning with this formula are not uncommon; three others have already been found at Antioch (Nos. 85, 85, 145). On the analogy of these inscriptions, the letters following (see unicode) would be the beginning of the name of the deceased. The name would then have begun NII (in ligature), followed by a letter of which only a perpendicular stroke is preserved. It may be suggested that this third letter was ?, and that the name was (see unicode) by the common substitution of (see unicode). Line 3, as is indicated by the breathing and the accent, began (see unicode), but it is difficult to suggest a restoration of the remainder of the line. Line 4. (see unicode) at the beginning of the line may stand for (see unicode). The ligature following this apparently represents M with a smaller P attached to the first upright
stroke. The upright stroke of this smaller letter rises above the loop which would be that of a P. It is possible that the letter might have been a B, but the stone has been damaged at this point in such a way that it is impossible to determine whether there was a smaller loop above the preserved one. It does not seem impossible to suppose that a P could have been written with the vertical stroke rising above the loop, and the supposition that M P was intended is favored by the appearance in a inscription of Shohut Kasaba, near Synnada, in Asia Minor (M.A.M.A., IV, no. 95), of M with a smaller P superimposed, representing (see unicode), as the context proves. It seems difficult to restore the original sense of this line. If, however, it be supposed that (see unicode) was intended, it may suggested that the words (see unicode) would represent the end of a sentence or phrase describing the deceased. The letters following this are difficult to interpret, particularly because the stone has been damaged, just after the T, in such a way that it is not clear what followed this. Coinciding with the upright portion of the curve of the C, and extending above and below it, is a perpendicular stroke. Between this stroke and the upright stroke of the T, the stone has been damaged, so that it is not certain whether these two strokes were joined to each other. The upper part of the perpendicular of the T has also been damaged; possibly there was originally a short transverse cutting at this point. It seems plausible to suppose that the letters originally written were THC or TIC though it is somewhat difficult to see why I should have been written in ligature with C in this fashion. It may be suggested that after (see unicode) a full stop was intended, and that the phrase following, commencing (see unicode), was an imprecation against anyone who disturbed the tomb or placed another body in it. In connection with the possible restoration of such a phrase, it must be noted that it is not certain whether the inscription originally ended with the last line which is now preserved, or whether some following lines have been lost; the lower edge of the stone is dressed, but, as is suggested by the trace of a round cutting preserved between the second and third lines, the original inscription may have been cut up for re-use. Primary Title: Fragment of a dedicatory inscription in Greek Classification: Architectural Elements Culture: Roman Date Label: 2nd – 3rd century A.D. Medium: Bluish marble Description: The fragment appears to be part of a dedication: this is indicated by the letters (see unicode) in line 8, which suggest a form of (see unicode) (or some cognate or compound), by the presence of the names in the last two lines, and by the way in which these lines are spaced. In this case the dedication would have been made by Titus Flavius, son of Cyrus, and by [ . . .}imius (Septimius?), son of Apollonides, and lines 10 and 11 might be the last of the original inscription. The surface of the stone is much worn in the center and in the upper right corner, so that it is impossible to determine how far to the right the first five preserved lines may have been extended. Lines 8, 10, and 11 extend across the whole width of the fragment, but the fragment is so incomplete that the length and contents of these lines give no indication of the original size of the inscription. There are no traces of letters above line 1, but they might have been completely effaced. Line 7 evidently did not extend as far as the preserved portion of line 8, since the end of the preserved
portion of line 8 is clear and any letters inscribed immediately above it would presumably appear; line 9 likewise appears to have ended with the i?ta which alone is preserved. The spaces between lines 5 and 6, 9 and 10, and 10 and 11 were presumably blank, since these spaces are all 2.1 cm. in height and thus are too small for two lines and too large for one line of letters such as are used elsewhere, the letters being 1.1 cm. in height and the space between adjacent lines 0.4 cm. Line 2: ] (see unicode) Line 3: possibly (see unicode) Line 8: it seen impossible to find a satisfactory restoration of the following (see unicode) Dimensions: h. 30.0 cm., w. 25.7 cm., d. 53.0 cm. The letters on each face are fairly well cut. a. The letters are inscribed below a horizontal line, which extends across the whole width of the fragment. Above this line, the stone is blank. The face is fairly smooth. Greatest height of letters 3.0 cm. b. This face is rougher than the other. Height of Y, which is probably nearly complete 5.5 cm. Ephraemius of Amida, who was patriarch of Antioch from A.D. 527 to 545, had previously followed a career in the civil service; he was comes sacrarum largitionum at some time before 522 and served twice as comes Orientis, first from 522 or 523 until 524, and again after an interva, in 526-527. A Greek inscription recording that “the bridges of the two Black Rivers” (which were evidently two streams of the same name in the neighborhood of Seleucia) were built while he was comes sacrarum largitionum and comes Orientis was found, by V. Chapot, built into a house at Seleucia, and was
published by him in B.C.H., XXVI (1902). pp. 166-168, 289 (cf. also P. Perdrizet in C.R.A.I., 1924, p. 324). It seems likely that the present fragment is a part of an inscription which likewise recorded something that was done during his time, for the preserved letters suggest that the beginning of the first line is to be restored ]?pì] ???a?µ[???----] and the beginning of the second line [?] e??? ?[a???t?????----]. Not enough of the remaining lines is preserved to give a clue to the contents of the original inscription. The beginning of the third line might contain a part of the name of the month Artemisios. Primary Title: Fragment of a double-sided Greek inscription Classification: Architectural Elements Culture: Roman Medium: Bluish marble Description: Inscribed on both faces. a. This side has apparently been dressed for re-use, since there is a raised ridge 0.4 cm. wide extending from the right for 8.4 cm., along the length of the fragment, and the letters are very shallow and faint. At one side, evidently the left, there is an oval O, 5 cm. high, followed by a point on the e line; and following this there are traces of two or three letters which are so faint that they cannot be read. b. The letters on this side are deeper and the surface seems to the original one. The bottom of the line corresponds with the bottom of the line indicated on the other side by the point following the O. The letters are incomplete; their greatest height is 5.5 cm. Dimensions: h. 8.5 cm., w. 13.3 cm., d. 2.5 cm. (3 3/8 x 5 1/4 x 1 in.) Inscription(s): It is not certain whether this is Greek Λ I M or A I M, or Latin A I M; the first stroke might be a part of an A in which the horizontal bar was rather high.
