David Grisman Tommy Emmanuel Sunday | June 23 | 8 p.m. TOMMY EMMANUEL & DAVID GRISMAN: C.G.P. & DAWG TOUR Tommy Emmanuel’s unerring sense of groove marked him as Australia’s youngest rhythm guitarist and by the time he made it to the big city in his late teens, Tommy was a rock star—and for good reason. Influenced by the Chet Atkins fingerstyle of guitar picking, Emmanuel possesses a style of solo guitar playing that encompasses the range of a whole band without loop pedals or overdubs, just one man and ten fingers. For many players, technical mastery would overwhelm the emotion of the music, but for Emmanuel, the approach to a song is emotion first; his music embodies his soulful spirit, sense of hope, and love for entertaining. He has received numerous awards, including two Grammy nominations. For nearly half a century, mandolinist David Grisman has been a guiding force in the evolving world of acoustic music. His musical range is wide and embraces many styles, genres, and traditions. An acoustic pioneer and innovator, Grisman has forged a unique artistic path, skillfully combining elements of jazz and bluegrass with many international flavors to create his own distinctive music. Grisman discovered the mandolin as a teenager growing up in New Jersey and learned to play in the style of Bill Monroe, the father of bluegrass music. His interests spread to jazz while playing in a folk-rock group, Earth Opera. After recording for major and independent labels, Grisman founded Acoustic Disc in 1990 and entered the most prolific period of his career, producing 67 critically acclaimed CDs, five of which were Grammy-nominated. Tommy Emmanuel and David Grisman will perform onstage together. Wednesday | July 3 | 8 p.m. JAKE SHIMABUKURO Almost everyone in Hawaii has strummed a ukulele at one time or another. But at the age of 14, Jake Shimabukuro realized that he was doing something different with the four-stringed instrument. His wholly unique approach to the ukulele started early. Growing up in Honolulu, Shimabukuro started playing the instrument at the age of four. He learned the basics from his mother then developed his craft by studying under ukulele masters. As he matured, Shimabukuro also found inspiration from guitar players, drummers, pianists, and singers. Even athletes helped fuel the intensity of his artistic fire. In 2005, Shimabukuro’s career really came to life with a video on YouTube.“I didn’t even know what YouTube was at the time, so I was totally surprised when people started telling me they’d seen a video of me playing ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps,’” he says. “Before I got a chance to check it out myself, the video had gone viral and a lot of music industry folks seemed to know about it. It was crazy!” Shimabukuro’s deeply beautiful and original take on George Harrison’s love ballad opened the floodgates. Since then, Shimabukuro’s records have topped the Billboard World Music Charts on numerous occasions. He has played with world-renowned orchestras and at prestigious venues such as the Hollywood Bowl, Lincoln Center, and the Sydney Opera House. Saturday | July 6 | 8 p.m. GABRIEL ROYAL Gabriel Royal got his start as a busker on the New York City subway, but the Oklahoma-born, Brooklyn-based musician has emerged as a trailblazing talent with inimitable style and enviable range. He has performed at NYC’s top music venues, played to sold-out crowds in countries around the world, and collaborated with some of the industry’s most in-demand names. Known for his soaring vocals, hum-along melodies, and lush arrangements, Royal, a classically trained musician, is among a select number of artists combining cello and voice. Royal plays his ‘grown-up lullabies’ in the subway stations of New York City where he continues to find a genuine connection with his inspiration: the commuters of New York. Influenced by Stevie Wonder’s groove and Burt Bacharach’s jazzy yet poppy sensitivities, along with other contemporary artists such as John Legend, Hiatus Kaiyote, Flying Lotus, James Blake, Janelle Monae, and Thundercat, Royal’s trademark sound is all his own. In 2016, Royal released his first album, a self-titled project that he mostly wrote while performing underground. Despite the album’s humble beginnings, it established Royal as a singer-songwriter with extraordinary sensitivity and creative intuition. His sophomore release, Miss Once in a Blue Moon, was released in 2018. The album features sweeping melodies, soulful ballads, and layered harmonies along with plenty of bright, toe-tapping numbers that will make you want to sing along.
