18 WEEKLY SA MIRROR SPORT Friday 22 July 2022 MATHEBULA TOURNEY PROMOTER ACCUSED OF SKIMPING ON PAYOUT TO THE BOXER’S FAMILY CRUMBS: Boxing legend Terror’s kids cry foul after receiving R50 000 out of R1,3-million allocated for the tournament named after him... By Pule Mokhine The family of South Africa’s first black world boxing champion Peter “ Terror” Mathebula is hopping mad at what they claim has been a rip-off by a promoter whom they accuse of having used their late dad’s name to stage a tournament that earned the impresario a massive R1.3 million tender and gave them a paltry R50 000. This follows a legacy showdown from which they claim they did not benefit, despite funds having being made available towards promoter Tshele Kometsi of TK Promotions, in addition to also making their wish-list as the family to the promoter. The event in hour of the departed ring icon, was staged at Jan Viljoen Hall in Randfontein in March last year - one year after the passing of Terror and his wife Emmah, both of whom were laid to rest next to one another at the Greenhills Cemetery Heroes Acre in Randfontein in January 2020. But what irked the family deeply is that their wish list was not even honored by Kometsi when the event named Terror Mathebula Tournament was staged contrary to the initial agreement by both parties. “ Imagine our shock and dismay when the promoter gave us only R50 000 plus seven T- shirts from the proceeds after staging the event that bore our late father’s name at a venue that we thought was not even befitting of our dad’s stat- ure,” said Thembi Mathebula, the ex-champion’s NOT OBLIGED: Impresario Thebe Kometsi I received R1,3 million AGGRIEVED: Thembi Mathebula, Terror’s after winning the granddaughter. tender to host the Terror Mathebula tribute tournament.
