010 A Deep Consideration What defines beauty? For decades, we humans have unknowingly sinked in to what society has defined beauty for us. The dictionary defines beauty as ‘a combination of qualities, such as shape, colour, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight’. Have they left out qualities beneath our physical qualities? Or are our personalities not considered part of what makes us beautiful? What about the ugly that lies beneath the beauty, does that still makes us beautiful? How much disorder and madness have this issue brought to us emotionally and physically? Tons. Not to mention with technology’s advancement, photo manipulation have entered the picture. Our body and appearance has been heavily altered to suit the public’s preference and eyes– to what society defines as beautiful, aesthetic and attractive. The public, corporations, communities, society, have mold us and change our perspectives of beauty. The definition of beauty has twisted our perspectives on how we look and see ourselves and one another. Society is lying to us– and yes, we know it, but why are we still getting swayed by such definitions? “We are born with the knowledge of who’s beautiful and who’s not.” Are we pushing the blame to society so we are backed up? Perhaps, beauty has been defined since birth and is part of our universal human nature. Dulcinea 2020
011 On the surface, the expression “beauty is in the eye of have any influence on people’s perception of beauty. the beholder” appears quite logical. 012 Ugliness Beneath Beauty We own beautiful things, savour beautifully attractive food, wear pretty clothings—but are they really beautiful? We own beautiful things, wear beautiful clothes, eat aesthetically–pleasing or scrumptious delicacies—but are they really beautiful? What exactly lies beneath them? Where did some of our accessories, clothes or food come from, how they were produced, were we ever curious? Or are we aware, but have turned a blind eye towards it? Several things we own came from violence, worker exploitation, environmental degradation, unspeakable human suffering and animal cruelty. Both humans and animals have been sacrificed and experimented to serve other humans and their needs & wants. These beautiful things were produced from inhumane settings and was made through horrible procedures, making them pretty ugly. But why do we still depict such possesses as beautiful? Dulcinea 2020

014 WHAT IS BEAUTY? The philosopher and teacher, Confucius said of beauty: “Everything has beauty but not everyone sees it.”
015 The Elephant Man Life of Joseph Carey Merrick Joseph Carey Merrick was a man back in the late 19th century London with severe deformities that was develop abnormally when he was an infant. Struggling with his disability that was not something he could have ever chose or changed, to live a normal life, he took another look at it and changed how he could improve his living and mindset for the future instead. “I sometimes think my head is so large because it is so full of dreams.” Merrick’s deformities were so extreme that also affected his speech, making him impaired as a result. People around him were either frightened of his appearance or was not able to understand what Merrick was trying to express through his speech. His facial deformities led people to see him as a freak, a monster and a threat to society. Efforts he made to make people understand him was met with little to no success. His boss from a factory Merrick originally worked at, even his father, believed that Merrick was not capable of doing things right, turning their backs on him. Valuing his ugliness that everyone around him defines, he volunteered to perform and exhibit himself for a freak show, to escape from his life in his previous workplace that was getting intolerable. He wanted to attempt to start profiting from his deformities. Nobody valued his beauty at this point of time, where only the showman he worked with valued his value in monetary worth as Merrick was succeeding in his freak show as The Elephant Man. During his career, Merrick traveled around cities for shows. Met with ups and downs that caused him to return back to London where he started out, he was eventually let to the encounter of a surgeon named Frederick Treves. Appearance & Judgment

Barnum — a.k.a. the greatest showman. the film progresses and reveals each of the ‘freaks’— the progression from having no self love, ashamed 2 about their own existence—to valuing their skills and talents from being ‘weird’ and having confidence about themselves. The characters had “weirdly shaped” bodies or were deemed unattractive as per society’s definition of normal and beautiful. They were often ostracised and impoverished due to a lack of work. “And more than that he made them feel loved. Barnum inadvertently celebrated what it means to be different. He taught people that being unique is a strength.” This movie emphasises self love. It has a wonderful message. A tribute to humanity. The characters in the movie were society’s outcasts and were given a place where they belonged and were celebrated. It’s an important message to convey, especially now. Appearance & Ugliness

Her facial hair attracted great interest such that she was placed on display in Barnum’s Museum involuntarily, when she was barely up to year old. As she grew up and was not contented to simply be stared and judged at, Jones expanded her talents and became a recognised and respected musician. Named as the most celebrated Bearded Lady of her era, Jones was known for her musical skills and gracious etiquette beyond her unique features. Late in her career, Jones also became a spokesperson for the other circus acts in Barnum’s show and started a campaign to rid the circus of the offensive term—‘Freaks’.
030 Charles Stratton: Tom Thumb Stratton had a condition where he stopped growing when he reached just six months old and would develop and grow again until when he was older. Barnum reached out to Stratton— also his distant relative—and taught the young man how to dance, act, impersonate, and sing, before taking him on a grand tour of Europe. Barnum gave Stratton a stage name—General Tom Thumb—to raise publicity stunt for their circus shows. Stratton has brought joy and delight to at least 50 million people in his lifetime, through his hilarious circus acts. “It is true we Stratton’s opinion to are little but the public when he got married to his we are as other halve, who is God made us, also a dwarf within perfect in our Barnum’s troupe. littleness.”

041 WHAT EXACTLY IS BEAUTY? In Witkin’s eyes, everyone, all people are beautiful regardless of societal norms. He sees beyond the surface, is mindful and reverent of or sorts of people and their humanness—and expresses them through his works— the surface where most of us gets trapped in our prejudice. “What’s different about a person in a way that’s considered art or beautiful is the outside or exterior identity, and also the inner spiritual factor. Any attempt to make something that doesn’t have the latter purpose is empty. It’s a waste of material and time. What I want to do, and always have worked for, is to show the beauty of difference.” WHAT EXACTLY IS UGLY?
