Title ll However, after consultation, it was best that the title is simplified instead of giving it so much glamour. With so much attention and character to it, the attention will be taken away from the stamps itself which has much more importance and narrative to it. I agreed. With a smaller title, it will also be more flexible in placing on the stamps, its design and its packaging. Still feeling stubborn and with an itchy backside, I still wanted to give the type more character rather than a simple font. I played with the letters to see if they can make out anything. Remembering how people always used to point their fingers when referring to themselves vs pointing at others, I thought that it would be interesting if I could incooperate that in the type. As these type of people; the inconsiderate ones, are always a little pushy, I illustrated the type to make it seemed like it was being pushed. 51

Stamps Deciding that I needed a After I was done with the colours, secondary title to the series, I I quickly moved on to the layout— looked back at my research and how mass purchased stamps are summarised it. “Celebrating 56 like. I included my series logo and years of inconsiderate culture”. Singpost’s logo. 52

Perforation Printed them out, and went on to take this challenge—DIY perforation with a sewing machine and a brass tube—tutorial found and followed off YouTube. Spent $7 for 3pcs just to trim off 1inch for usage File down one end of the brass tube File and sharpen inside of brass tube Insert into sewing machine—it is time Very poor attempt, very bad workmanship I tried 53

First Day Covers A separated collection from the mass produced stamps, with a more premium look and feel. Basically a limited edition series just for collectors purposes and not for use. 54

Colour palette To continue with the same palette as the stamps itself, I picked four main colours within the palette itself as the background colour; and not forgetting my shadows and grains. 55

Narration Transport Titled “A Very Grand Entrance”, I wanted to visualise it with a person skating pass with a very obvious and attention seeking presence— at the same time posting posters all around— meaning that he is screaming for attention. Just like the inconsiderate commuters on the train, their behaviours are as if they are seeking attention, making a very grand entrance with their ungraciousness. Toilet Titled “Off to a Dirty Business”, it is meant to represent how we always say making a trip to the toilet as ‘doing a business’. Elements of an office worker—briefcase and papers were used. Public Spaces Titled “An Entitled Family”, it is use to represent how such a group of people can not be related, but yet so similar with their behaviours. Elements within a household such as photo frames, tiled walls and cupboard were used. HDB Titled “Horrible Surprises”, it is used to indicate how we would always get surprised by the huge amount of improper disposal of litter, by the late—night—karaoke and by our neighbour’s never ending hoarding along the corridor which might cause us to be stuck in a fire one fine day. Elements of surprises such as gift box, shopping bag, ribbons and letters were used. Mike’s Thoughts Messy. You do not have to separate them by colours again as the series itself have its uniqueness that can already be distinguished; even with a similar background colour throughout. There is no need to segregate within categories again; it will be confusing. Also, now the stamps seem to be hiding in the background. The attention have been stolen. Perhaps attempt a solid black for a tint of contrast. This way, the stamps will be the limelight. For the outlines, experiment and maybe try a 50% opacity? The narration in the background is not the main character. Don’t let it steal the show from the stamps itself. You need to know how to control the complexity. 56

Development Improved after Mike’s feedback. I was heavily not feeling the black, but it was the only compatible and safe colour at this point. I will experiment again for summative. Me First, You Second A series expressing Singaporean’s innermost frustration. It is a visual depiction of our Singaporean condition. Placed amongst the other glorious, celebrated and honourable events in Singapore, this seires points out our nation’s unique—never changing—an integral part of—our inconsiderate life. We are merely just a nation packaged under a first world title with an absence of first world citizens. 57

Packaging It does not end yet. I wish to do an exterior packaging for the First Day Covers. 58

Suggestion from Mike Instead of the conventional paper packaging that could look cheap instead of premium—which is a look you should go for—perhaps you can try to experiment with these kinds of acrylic? Artfriend or daiso sells them at a cheap price. Get those binder clips if you want to too. Acrylic can push off a limited edition and premium touch to it. Purchased 2 large pieces of acrylic—taking into consideration front and back of 1 sheet, which equates to 8 pieces of small sections. Cutting acrylic was difficult and scary. I had to use a special acrylic cutter and run through it 10 times then snap it after. It was terrifying. Snapping things scares me to the bones. After attempting 1 set; both front and back, I assembled to see how it would look. I wasn’t a fan. Maybe because the cuts weren’t clean, or maybe because I did not had anything solid to bind them together, making it look ‘finished’ 59

Poster have been doing, and hurry get Attempted to bring out a sarcastic them before anyone else. Ending and mocking call to action that with a ‘be first, not second’ call to aligns with the satirical tone of voice action further mocks Singaporeans of ‘Me First, You Second’. that they should achieve being first like how they have been living— ‘Grab yours first before anyone inconsiderately—and they might else!’ interprets that people should as well continue just attitude and be greedy and have the ‘first come behavior of living selfishly. first serve’ mindset like they always 60

Classmates’ Feedback Rian Interesting that various materials were explored. Nina Whole structure of campaign was good, initially worried that the tone of voice would be too harsh, but the way you(me) interpreted it, was good. I can see it happening, I love the execution. Valery I think it is really nicely done, presentation was well explained and the process was good. The idea/concept would definitely be memorable for Singaporeans; could generate attention and attraction. The posters are really bright and would attract attention, but I feel the text looks blended and camouflaged into the colours. For the acrylic packaging, you can try acrylic glue to bind it, or look at Muji stores to find those acrylic magnet frames. Li Ying I love the illustrations, it looks like a very fun project. I think it would be even funnier if the posters are placed in the context itself. Christina The whole outlook looks interesting and fun, it makes people reflect on themselves. Colours used looks really outstanding; very out of the box and it attracts attention. Lecturers’ Feedback Vanessa An example that graphic design can be used to approach such a projec or subject—where a very wide audience will be able to appreciate—it is a good approach. Illustrations are fantastic, very professionally done. For the First Day Covers, please avoid black, I understand that you were attempting to show contrast, but black itself is also very intense. You can even attempt white, and it will look better. Perforation wise, it will be good if you can invest in a way to execute it; that is if it is made so people can take it. Not sure if acrylic would be the best option, can attempt other packaging ways. Since perforations allows the stamp to bend, maybe can explore somewhere along those lines; with the forms itself. Mike Seems like there is a lot of things working for you. Your introduction of the presentation is good; using ways to visualize the project and to present the topic. Presentation at the beginning have already managed to engage the audience; better than using data and statistics. I like your design process. “Celebrating 56 years of inconsideration” is a wonderful satirical and mocking statement; good that people can laugh at themselves. 63

Knowledge & Understanding— The project is a satirical but intelligent take on Singapore. It is a good balance of using design to approach societal topics and behavioural patterns in Singapore. Applied Knowledge & Understanding— The illustrations are very well done. Do avoid using black for the background, and do invest in professionally perforating the stamps for the final outcome. Professional Practice— Presentation is succinct and good for the timing. Overall, you have strengthen your design concepts and art directions on the final presentation of your self negotiated project. Your introduction to research and insights is outstanding. The effective used of visuals and data to represent Singaporean mentality. There are also possibilities in your illustration to link song of Singapore on your stamps. Looking forward to the entire design collaterals for your summative. Summative I researched mainly into art direction and how First Day Covers are normally presented. Stamps wise, I adjusted the font, position and hierarchy of the information. I also added a white border around the stamp as I felt that it would look better and neater. 64

Improved the stamps and updated the series logo— felt that the previous one looked too sketchy. Sketches for the composition of the First Day Covers. 65

Redesigned the First Day Covers— avoiding black and too complicating background. Included bus pole marketing banners 66
