BLOG 1 7 Hello, my name is Urška Paska. In my blogs I will mostly write about me and my hobbies. In today’s blog I would like to introduce myself, and tell you what I like. For starters, I am a fifteen-year old high school freshman. I live in Dravograd. In a big house, with my parents, grandparents and younger sister and brother. Unfortunately, we do not have any pets, although I love animals. I also truly love music, nature and art. Because of that, I adore museums, galleries and theatre. And I am most satisfied when I walk on a meadow on a sunny day. I really like traveling too. In the fu- ture, I would like to visit all continents, and get to know different hab- its and cultures of people. I hope you like my first blog. See you next time.

BLOG 2 9 Hey, I am back with my new blog! In this blog, I would like to tell you about one of my hobbies. That is photography. I started taking pictures when I got my first phone. I was ten years old at the time. My dad supported me the most. He was my biggest fan, and also he impressed me with photography. At the age of thirteen, he gave me his camera. Since then I have been taking pictures almost every day. Last year, for my birthday I got a new camera. It is called Canon EOS 250D, and I love my camera very much. It means so much to me. In just one summer I shot more than 20 000 photos. This year I joined a photography club at my high school. I love the club, the teacher and other students very much. I learned a lot of new things in those few months. On the fourth of November, we went on a photo trip. It was so much fun, and the teacher taught us a lot of new things, we did not know before. We all took amazing photos, at least that is what the teacher said. And this year I also started taking pictures for the Svolley volleyball team. I like to photograph nature and people I do not know. Because I can capture one-time moments in pictures, and look at them again later. Photography for me represents therapy, relaxation, and art. In my opin- ion, photography represents an artistic view of an object. In conclusion, I would like to show you some of the photos I take. ENJOY, see you next time.
10 BLOG 3 Hey, guys! I am back with another blog. Today I am very excited to talk about my second favorite hobby. And that is painting. I have been painting for about three years now. I am not sure what or who inspired me to start painting. Probably I just started one day out of nothing. However, I remember painting some flowers with a sunset for my first painting. At the time, I thought this picture was incredible, but now I think it is a disaster. I do not have a particular style of painting. For example, I used to paint a lot with acrylic paints. Although now, I much prefer oil painting, which I have discovered recently. The differences between these two techniques are that oil paints take much longer to dry. They dry for one to two weeks. They are also much easier to blend. A very obvious difference in use is that we do not mix oil paints with water, but with oil. Also, brushes for oil paints can not be washed with water, because the paints contain oil, which, as we all know, does not mix with water. I also choose very different motifs for painting. I like to paint nature, the sky, people, and also abstract paintings. Someday I would like to find my own style of painting and paint just in that style. That is all for today. See you soon.

BLOG 4 13 Hello everyone, I am back. In this blog, I will be talking about my third hobby. And that is cook- ing. I love cooking, but it was not always like that. I started cooking on my own pretty early. I was about eight years old. I cooked at week- ends when my parents did not have time to prepare lunch.Even if I did not like it, I never complained about it. Because I knew that with my help I saved their time. I started enjoying cooking about two years ago, during the first quarantine. During the week we never ate at home. I and my siblings ate at school and my parents at work. And then the quarantine started. I and my siblings were staying at home, but both of my parents went to work. They usually worked late, so we were too hungry by the time they came home and cooked for us. So I decided I would start cooking lunch for me and my brother and sister. I learned so quickly. I just looked up a recipe online and started cooking. And at that time I fell in love with cooking. I cook all the time. Usually at weekends, because I have more time. While I cook, I always listen to music. Mostly radio, sometimes my play- list or podcast. Maybe I also like to cook because I am very picky about food. I like just risotto, vegetables, moussaka with broccoli, and my mother’s pie. How- ever, I eat all of the other food. But I do not love it. I like to cook risotto, Chinese noodles, moussaka with broccoli, dump- lings with plums, and vegetable soup. So, that was all for this blog. I hope you like it.

The bright stars shine on her skin, in the dark night, like a star, she is glowin’. The sky is filled with little stars, stars are moving and we are dream- in’. 18 WOMAN I knew a woman once. She lived in the woods, next to a tall birch tree. A song from her heart, she sang it to me. Her lovely voice still lives in my head. For every breath she takes, a painful teardrop falls down my face. Yesterday there was no tree there anymore. A light breeze whispered to me that she had been gone for a long time. Is there still anything left of her, is my question now. I sit by the stump of her tree, wondering if her voice will come and say »hi« to me. I can't shed a single tear. Then I realize she won't come back. I stare at the image I painted of her. Suddenly, I hear her voice telling me to let go. I release. Now, the light winds carry her image over the paths of her peaceful forest. And her memory lives on. Julija Valentar Zdovc, 2. b
IN PRAISE OF HERESY 19 And what if you knew, insignificant sailor, You who pray for your safety at sea, That there was a Someone in the depths to protect you, Would you have dived deep down In search of Heresy? And what if you knew, trivial pastor, You who ask lies for forgiveness each day, That there was a Someone who you could repent to, Would you have asked Them To help you find Heresy? And what if you knew, poor starving masses, Ye who crawl in hunger and thirst, That there was a Someone who gladly would feed you, Would you have turned cheek In search of Heresy? And if only we'd known, scared little girl, You who died at the hands of disease, That there was a Someone who could've helped you, I'd have gladly accepted The Heretic's brand. Jaša Knez, 3. c
20 AUTUMN When the leaves start to fall down and everything turns red and brown, like an old shiny violin. That’s when the autumn begins. For many, it’s not the best season of the year, Perhaps, because the rain is all they can hear. But for me, the rain is like a relaxing song, that repeats on and on, but it’s never too long. No one knows how long the raindrops in the air float, but when they hit the ground, you never hear the same note. And if you look up at the sky, the clouds are so gorgeous, that you wish you could fly. But time quickly passes by, so at the end of November, autumn says goodbye. David Ladinek, 1. a
FLINCH 21 My breath is cold, I keep shaking, and I think I might have tics, because, every look, every touch, makes me flinch. Every sound makes me nervous. Except your voice. Oh your voice gives me comfort. It hugs me around my waist and whispers “you’re going to be okay”. And for a minute I believe it, but the second I let fear find me, I flinch again. anonymous
22 MESSENGER BAG I'll put your earlobes in my messenger bag, carry them around for the day, bury them somewhere where no one will ever find them. Then I'll come home to you my sweetheart. I'll come home to you. I'll put on a silent movie, you know, since you can't hear anymore. I think you're gonna like it. You're gonna like it. I'll put your eyeballs in my messenger bag, carry them around for the day, hide them in the bubblegum dispenser, no one will suspect a thing. Then I'll come home to you my darling, I'll come home to you.
I'll let you feel my hearbeat since you can't see or hear anymore. I'll listen to your heartbeat as well. I love your heartbeat. I put your heart in my messenger bag, I carried it around for the day, I bought a stuffed bear, hid it inside and took it home to you. I think you'd like it if you could see it, if you could hear it, if you could feel it. You're getting cold now sweetheart, you're getting cold now love. Do you want to wear my sweater. Bug 23
24 LAST CHRISTMAS Last Christmas snow made me feel better. Last Christmas all those sweets gave me comfort. Last Christmas being with my family wasn’t scary. Last Christmas music was just entertainment. Last Christmas the smell of candles was heartwarming. Last Christmas the daily walks were just walks and last Christmas I tried to change. But this Christmas snow is just a reminder life goes on. This Christmas the sweets are just unnecessary calories. This Christmas being around family feels claustrophobic. This Christmas music is a sweet escape I need. This Christmas the smell of candles just makes me remem- ber the happy me that I killed. This Christmas walks are necessary and full of overthinking. This Christmas I’m afraid it might be my last. anonymous
HOW CAN YOU MISS SOMETHING YOU NEVER HAD? How can you miss something you never had? That feeling of warmth, my thoughts keep running into your arms, where I feel safe. Your smile makes me happy, your hugs are the only thing that’s keeping me alive. I live in the clouds, that, everyone can see, you make me feel loved, you keep me breathe. Just thinking of life without you makes me feel sad, but how can you miss something you never had? anonymous 25
26 UNTITLED “I’m proud of you,” he says when I say I don’t want coffee. While I think of all the calories I would consume, he just thinks I want to be healthy. “I’m proud of you,” is the sentence that makes me break. Even if it sounds so innocent. Because you wouldn’t be proud if you knew that this modesty isn’t just modesty but it’s a monster called an eating disorder. You wouldn’t be proud if you knew that I lie to you every time you ask me what I ate. ”I’m proud of you,” he says and I can’t help myself but cry, because the same feeling of guilt flashes me every time I eat too much. And I hate it, I hate that I need to lie so much. It’s getting really exhausting. anonymous
WAITING 27 I keep waiting for my prince charming, I keep waiting for somebody to save me. But I know no one will ever come. I feel like Repunzel, trapped in a tower, just that I will never be saved. Because the tower is always too tall, my hair is too thin and short for someone to climb up on it. And even if it wouldn’t be, there is nobody who would take time and use their strength to climb up that tower for me. At this point, probably, not even myself. But I will just keep waiting for my prince, because if my hope dies, I die with it. anonymous

30 SPACE CASE by Stuart Gibbs Space case is a murder mystery that happened on the moon in Moon Base Alpha. The main character is Dashiell Gibson or Dash for short. He is in space because his parents are well-known scientists. He did not like living on a space base very much, as he was just able to repeat his routine every day. Life was not interesting to him until some- one named Dr. Holz died unexpectedly. Dr. Holz was an older man, so everyone thought he died of old age. Dash though different, he be- lieved that someone killed him. While Dash was researching what could happen to Dr. Holz new people came to the MBA. Nina (she was the main one at the base) gave him the task to show the newcomers the surroundings. One of the new ones was Kira, who was the same age as Dash. During the research, he also met Zan (a security guard), who confirmed to him that she also be- lieved that the death of Dr. Holz was no coincidence. They came to a common decision: they will discover who the killer was. Kira's room was right next to the room where Zan and Dash were talking. She overheard their conversation. Kira told Dashiell that she wanted to help and that she would hack the security cameras to see if someone killed Dr. Holz. So she did it but couldn't find anyone, only Dr. Holz doing sign language. He was saying that they need to find his phone. Kira and Dashiell figured out that it was outside the base on the moon. During the night they went out to find the phone but they were attacked by a robotic hand that was being controlled by a person inside. When they got back to the base an alarm went off and woke everyone up. They found a phone and listened to a recording and fig- ured out who it was that murdered Dr. Holtz. It was Garth Ghrisan, his excuse was that he was trying to stop Dr. Holtz from sharing his news about aliens trying to connect with humankind. Nina was very angry so she locked him in the greenhouse because they did not have a jail cell. When everyone calmed back down Zan told Dash her secret. She was an alien all along. That is why she tried to help Dash because she and Dr. Holz were friends. She also told him that she comes from a distant planet and that she is connected to him only mentally (so only Dash sees her and no one else).
The Space case continues in the next book: Spaced out where Nina is missing. Theme: I think it's murder mystery because there was a murder. It's not scary. It gives clues throughout the book. I also think its a murder mys- tery because it is set in space and space is very mysterious. Recommendation: Of course, I do recommend this book because there is a very big plot twist that happens. PERCY JACKSON 33 AND THE LIGHTNING THIEF by Rick Riordan Percy Jackson and the lightning thief is the first novel in a fantasy se- ries called Percy Jackson and the Olympians. It was written by Rick Riordan, and it is based on Greek mythology. The novel is about a boy who finds out he is the son of a Greek god. Percy was not like normal children even before he found out he was a son of a Greek god. He has ADHD. That means he cannot focus, he is hyperactive and as you figure it out this isn’t a very good combination. He was attending many boarding schools and he was kicked out of all of them. At the last school he was attending, he kind of vaporized his math teacher who had turned into a monster and tried to kill him. Af- ter that, things got even worse. His best friend Grover is a satyr (half goat and a protector of nature) and was supposed to protect Percy, but it was the other way around. Even his favourite teacher is a centaur and a director of Camp half-blood for people like Percy. You might think what could possibly go so wrong after that? Well, Percy got accused of kidnapping and killing his mother, which he obviously did not do. His mother drove him to Long Island - to Camp half-blood, which is the only safe place for Percy, but before they got there, they were attacked by a Minotaur (Yes! That Minotaur!) and his mother vanished (you could say she got killed, but she came back at the end of the book). In the camp he met Annabeth (she is a daughter of Athena) and Dionysus. For more trouble, he got accused of stealing the lightning that belongs to Zeus. He does not have a very good temperament, so this could lead to a war of gods. After that, Poseidon claimed Percy as his son and Percy, Annabeth and Grover went on a mission to find the lightning and the person who stole it. The rumour was that Hades had stolen the light- ning, so Percy, Annabeth and Grover had to go to the underworld. The entrance to the underworld was on the other side of the country and they got attacked by a lot of monsters on their way there (like medusa and other monsters from Greek mythology).
34 Even the god of war Ares helped them to get there. When they got to the entrance, they managed to reach the underworld alive, which isn’t as easy as it sounds. When they got there, they made friends with Kerber, the dog who is guarding the gates to the underworld, so they could be in the real underworld (like you imagine). A friend, named Luke had given them flying shoes before they left the camp, but these shoes were cursed so they fell in Tartarus (the darkest part of the un- derworld), and they heard Kronos who told them that he will rise again. They managed to escape and after that, they had a lovely talk with Ha- des. Hades first accused them of stealing his helmet of darkness, which helps him to hide in the shadows. So, he wanted to kill them too. They managed to settle the killing part and figured out who stole the light- ning of Zeus. It was Ares. Ares stole the lightning. Ares wanted the war. Ares wanted control. When they came from the Hades’ palace in the real world (alive world/our world/living world) the problems haven’t stopped. Ares was very angry because they survived the underworld, so he challenged Percy to fight with him. The fight wasn’t fair, the per- spective does not matter. But Percy still won. Percy was better than the god of war, the one god who should be the best at fighting. But Percy still won. You might think that that is enough problems for one novel. Well, you would be wrong. All things that happened were needed to be explained to Zeus, and the lightning bolt and Hades’ helmet had to be found too. So, they went to the Olympus to talk to Zeus, and he did not want to listen to them, but when they found the lightning and the hel- met, Zeus had to believe them. The book ends with a fight between Per- cy and the friend who gave him the flying shoes - Luke. Luke showed Percy he is a traitor and after he lost the fight, he left the camp. I liked the book, and the theme was very interesting to me because I really like Greek mythology. I can’t choose my favourite character, be- cause I love all of them, but I probably like Annabeth the most. It was fun reading this book and I really enjoyed it. I am currently reading the 4th book in the Percy Jackson series and there is still a lot of drama, so this has not changed. A few days ago, I got my hands on the translat- ed copy of the lightning thief and I cannot wait to read it in my native language. The novel was great to get to know the Greek gods, because it is fun to know where some names came from, like Nike, the Greek goddess of victories and so on. I am happy that I did this assignment because I probably would not read this book in English, but just the translated version. I will start reading books in English too, because it can help develop my English and is not as hard as I thought it would be. Nuša Jehart, 1. b

36 NO LONGER HUMAN by Dazai Osamu If I could put my feelings into a book, this would be it. It was a wonder- ful read. I bought the book somewhere in September, when I found a review about it on the internet. Some people said it was a good book, relatable even, then again others said it was not anything special. Of course, my curious self had to buy it and check it out. The book is mature, it talks about topics that aren’t discussed a lot and are often looked through. The book is also appar- ently semiautobiographical. I’ve read about the author, Dazai Osamu, on the internet and I have read about his life. I could see the similarity really quickly. He projected onto the main character in the book, de- scribing nothing but his life. He talks about how he just can not grasp the concept of human beings, his own feelings about certain stuff (ex. love).. He has a miserable life, one so awful he is convinced it is his fault. Even though it feels like there was no feelings when this was writ- ten, I could sense strong emotions on each page. After reading the book, I felt nothing at all. The book left me in a some- what unresolved, empty feeling. Overall, it is wonderful, I could call it a masterpiece. Tajra Herman, 1. a
THE INSTITUTE 37 by Stephen King I started reading this book in late June where me and my family went camping to Croatia. Let me say that it was the best book to read ever. I love Stephen King in general, just the way he “over describes” things is amazing. He makes you get interested in the book and get to like characters in the first half where nothing “interesting” happens, and in the second half of the book he just strikes you down with how many things unravel at the same time. This book was especially interesting to me because I really like a little of paranormal “things” in books, and this book has the perfect amount of it. I really like the characters in this book as well, they are just so loving and the fact that their goal is so clear is just another good thing. To sum up, I really recommend this book to anyone that is interested in thriller books and it is a great book to start reading King as well. The only thing that may bother you is the fact that you need to have a pretty good vocabulary in order to read the book more fluently but you could always just listen to an audiobook. 40 GLOBAL ISSUES - CHILD LABOUR Child labour is often defined as work that deprives chil- dren of their childhood, their potential and their dignity and is harmful to physical and mental development. It refers to work that is men- tally, physically, socially or morally dangerous and harm- ful to children. Child labour for the 5-17 years’ age range is highest in India (5.8 mil- lion). Followed by Bangladesh (5.0 million), Pakistan (3.4 million) and Nepal (2.0 million). Some of the root causes which make children particularly vulnerable to child labour are: poverty, conflicts and mass migration, limited under- standing of child labour, poor access to decent work, natural disasters and climate change. Millions more children risk be- ing pushed into child labour as a result of the COVID-19 crisis, which could lead to the first rise in child labour after 20 years of progress, according to a new brief from the International La- bour Organization and UNICEF. Children work in mines, which are one of the most dangerous places to work. They also work on building sites and brick-making factories with- out proper health and safety rules. They are at risk from machinery, chemicals, harsh working conditions and lots of other hazards. In Indo- nesia and in some other countries they work in plantation (like tobacco plantations, rubber plantations, palm oil plantations).
The worst forms of child la- 41 bour include: child trafficking, sexual exploitation (pornog- raphy and prostitution), drug trafficking, slavery and forced labour. The consequences are staggering. Child labour can result in extreme bodily and mental harm and even death. In nearly every case it cuts children off from schooling and health care, restricting their funda- mental rights and threatening their future. It is time to consign child labour to the history books and to allow all children to realise their rights.
