Phrae A city with a thousand- year-old culture Phrae travel guide book is prepared by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports Phrae Office supported by the Phrae development budget. The goal of this project is to promote and develop the potential of Phrae tourism in the year 2019. An objective of this book is to cover tourist attractions in the eight districts of Phrae. The attractions are suggested along 3 routes. This book contains images of the tourist attractions along with interesting content for each tourist location Including contact information. Phrae Province is a province that has viewpoints and a variety of cultural attractions including the beautiful nature, many unique ways of life and a long-standing culture that has been passed down for thousands of years. Therefore, we welcome tourists to travel along the 3 tourist routes to experience Phrae, a small province with lots of charm. We would like to thank the relevant agencies, the government, private sectors, and the publics for their participation in supporting this project by providing information and promoting tourism in Phrae. 1Route 1 Wat Phra That Suthon Mongkhon Khiri It is one of the most beautiful temples of Lanna arts. There is a large reclining Buddha in Burmese style in front of the temple. On the balcony, there are murals that depicts Buddha’s life. In front of the stairs to the east, there is a large lion statue. In the same area you can find a museum made up of teak wood in Lanna style. The museum exhibits some weapons that were used by the ancient warriors, photos of the northern leaders and pictures of Lanna events. It was named Saen Sae, when translated to English is hundred thousand pieces locked / attached together. Because it is made up of hundred thousand pieces of bronze that are attached together. It was built 1,200 years ago. In the present, there is a festival to pay respect to Phra Jao Saen Sae held every March. 3 n Baan Mae Phuak Railway Station A train station with great architecture that was built during the reign of King Rama V. It is awarded as an outstanding conservation building in 2016. It is made up of wood with reinforced concrete foundation. It’s an H – shape building with two floors. The first floor serves as the waiting area. Opposite the station is the first teak plantation in Thailand which existed since 1953. It is a learning center of arts for people including children and adults. Some professionals who want to learn about art or those who want to make extra income through arts also come to this center. 1Route 5 n Den Chai Railway Station It is the railway route of Northern Thailand. It is the only train station in Phrae province which has a railway station level 1. It has 11 tracks which are 1 main track, 6 switched tracks, 2 ended tracks and 3 tracks next to the platform. You can still go to Nan province if you get off from Den Chai Railway Station. Location : Baan Phae Rong Sup Moo 6, Den Chai Subdistrict, Den Chai District, Phrae Contact Information : Tel. 054-613260, 054-613700 6 n Baan Sai Yoi Formerly known as Ban Pak Pan but later changed to Ban Sai Yoi which means vine that characterized the banyan tree. The house was owned by Mister Jai Chamnan. The village where the house is located is famous in producing “Kloy”, a root crop which can be steamed or fried. The 99 years old teak tree which was used to restore the Giant Swing in Bangkok in 2006 was found in this village. There is an ancient temple in the village named Wat Tham Pha Tang that holds the hearts of the people in the community. 7 n Wat Sung Men 1Route It is a Lanna-styled temple aged around 200 years which has interesting antiques. The Buddha statues were carved with wood and can be disassembled. The Buddhist scripture with Thai language and Pali language versions are the most complete manuscript in Thailand. It has been kept in the temple by Kru Bar Kanjana Aranyawasi Maha The Ra, the former abbot of Sung Men Temple. People celebrate the Tak Dharma festival which is held around January of every year. Inside the temple is a slanting pagoda which is named as “Phra That Noeng.” The word “Noeng” means tilt in English. The temple and the pagoda were built at the same time. The pagoda is constructed using bricks. The temple also has a museum and Ban Tai Lue model village. 1Route 9 n Teak Furniture Trading Area Sung Men District is known for teak wood furniture. Almost all household in the community has roadside shops in Don Moon and Hua Dong subdistricts. There are hundreds of stores to choose from. The area is considered as the largest trading district that sells teak wood furniture in Thailand. Inside the temple, there is a Buddha Image named Phuttakosai Sirichai Mahasakayamuni. There is also a golden pagoda and the priceless Phra Ming Chedi Mueang which is a replica of Lord Buddha’s footprint. The Kin Lottery is an important tradition at the temple which is held in the month of October every year. 11 1Route n Khum Chao Luang Muang Phrae This museum was built in 1893. It was originally a residential house owned by the last ruler of Phrae, Chao Luang Phiriya Thep Wong. It was a colonial style house also known as gingerbread buildings, constructed using brick and cement. King Rama the 9th resides in the building during his visit in Phrae. The museum is open daily from 08.30 a.m. – 04.30 p.m. Location : Nai Wiang Subdistrict, Muang Phrae District, Phrae (Opposite Nareerat School Phrae) Contact Information : 054-524158 12 n Kad Kong Kao / Kad Phra Non It’s one of the oldest street in Phrae. In the present, the street is also known as the Saturday Night Market. The street opens only on Saturdays from 4 pm in the afternoon to 8 pm in the evening. There are a lot of local food to choose from. They also sell local OTOP products, traditional sweets and Thai dresses. 1Route 13 n Wat Phra That Cho Hae It is a sacred thousand-year-old temple in Phrae. Wat Phra That Cho Hae or Temple of the Relic wrapped in satin cloth that was used to wrap the sacred hair and left elbow relic of the Lord Buddha. Wat Phra That Cho Hae is also the temple of people who were born in the year of tiger. Several staircases with Naga serpents on the side leads up to the temple on a hill overlooking the valley. The pagoda was built in an octagonal shape in Chiang Saen style with 33 meters high and 11 meters wide square base on each side. It’s also built using bricks and cement covered with gilded brass plates. This day the temple’s chedi is wrapped in the same cloth during the annual of Wat Phra That Cho Hae festival in around March of every year. From the temple, you will be able to see the beautiful view of three districts in Phrae which are Sung Men District, Rong Kwang District, and Muang Phrae District. 15 n Phra That In Kwaen It is a forest monastery as it is surrounded with series of high trees. There is a good source of clean air in the place. Inside the temple, there is a Buddha statue named Phra Buddha Chayantri Mahasajan, there is also a replica of the Lord Buddha’s footprint and a cave named Silaban Khu Ha which has traces of the treasures and the ancient Buddha image. Location : Maha Phothi Wongsachariya Dharma Center, Ban Na Khu Ha, Suan Khuean Subdistrict, Muang Phrae District, Phrae Contact Information : 054-645688 1Route 16 n Wat Na Khu Ha The main attraction of the place is its bamboo bridge over the green fields that connects the mountain to the big sitting golden Buddha statue “Phra Chao Ton Luang” at the back of the temple. At the end of the bridge, you will come to a path that climbs the mountain and leads to two caves, Tham Yai and Tham Noi or Pa Singha, a viewpoint where you can see the whole field and the bamboo bridge. 17 1Route n Choeng Thong Waterfall This is a small waterfall which steam is along the road. The main waterfall is located 200 meters from the road. It has 4 levels with large rocks. It’s beautiful and pleasing to the eye. The waterfall is located in the area of Lam Nam Nan National Park, Mueang Phrae District, Phrae Province. Location : Lam Nam Nan National Park, Cho Hae Subdistrict, Mueang Phrae District, Phrae Contact Information : 090-6047793 18 n Thung Hong Indigo Market These markets are the largest shopping spots located in Thung Hong Subdistrict in Phrae which sell Mor Hom products. These are clothing products sewed by villagers in the district. The Tai Phuan, which means local people, inherited the skill in making these products from their ancestors. So, Mor Hom symbolizes an identity of Phrae Province. There is a Kam Fah festival held in February of every year based on the belief of the Tai Phuan people. 19 n Phae Muang Phee Forest Park The landscape of the forest park is caused by eroded dirt and sandstorm. The place is mostly surrounded with rock cliffs and lands of orange-brown color, just like Grand Canyon. It is named Muang Phee, means ghost town, since the place is quiet and stange. The place was declared a national park on March 2nd, 1982. Location : Nam Cham Subdistrict, Mueang Phrae District, Phrae Contact Information : 054-511162 1Route 20 n Wat Chom Sawan This attractive wat was constructed by a group of migrant Tai Yai, or Shan, teak workers in the early 20th century. The teak monastery used as both a church, a temple and a cloister. Inside the monastery shows exquisite craftsmanship. The ceiling and the pillar decorated with ornamental stained glass. There are some antiques shown within the temple. Wat Chom Sawan was built during the reign of King Rama V in 1894 by Ngiao people who lived base in Burma and travelled to Phrae for selling and trading. The temple therefore was left to run down for a while and later it’s being restored. 1Route 21 n Phrae City Pillar Shrine In the past, the villagers called the navel of the city. It was built in Lanna-style art with lacquer gilded paint. It was newly created according to the policy of the Ministry of Interior in 1992, after receiving the royal pillar of Phrae, a large stone pillars from King Rama 9 in Bangkok. Phrae City Pillar shrine has brought to be settled in a new area on June 6, 1994. A part of the inscription is facing the courts located behind the city pillar. It has a population of about 100 family. In the village, there is an Assam tea tree aged not less than 100 years which was used in the past to produce Miang. There is a Home Stay. Tao Pu Lu, a long tail land turtle can be seen here. And there is a Natong cave that has unearthed ancient human skeletons aged around 4,500 years. 23 n Wong Buri House A striking pink building aged over 100 years was built in Thai and European style. According to the order of Mae Chao Bua Tha, the first consort of Prince Piriya Thep Wong who was the last ruler of Phrae as a gift for the marriage of Chao Sunanta, Chao Burirat’s daughter, and Luang Phong Phibun. The house decorated with decorative patterned motifs called “Gingerbread” throughout the building. Wong Buri House opens every day from 9 am–5 pm. Location : Kham Lue Road, Nai Wiang Subdistrict, Mueang Phrae District, Phrae Contact Information : 054-620153 1Route 24 n Phrae Ancient Wall Phrae people called it “Mek.” Considered to be the most complete ancient city wall in Thailand. It is thousands of years old, with a single-layer earth wall around the city, a total length of about 4 kilometers. Outside of the wall there is an ancient moat, with both the city wall and the canal being built. It was established to prevent threats, including providing water for consumption in urban areas, which is expected to be built with the establishment of Phrae city since 1374. 25 1Route n Wat Phra That Chom Chaeng It’s previously called “Wat Phra That Juan Jang” because when the Lord Buddha arrived at this place, it was almost a bright time. Later called in distorted way as “Wat Phra That Chom Chaeng” which is located on a hill near Phra That Cho Hae. Its shape looks similar Phra That Cho Hae. This place was built in 788 ACE with an unidentified builder. Phra That Chom Chaeng was glittered in golden color and covered with beautiful gold. It has a height of 29 meters and a base is 10 meters wide. The pagoda is a combination of Sukhothai and Wiang Kosai style. Around the pagoda, there are cement walls and arches in all four directions. The Phra That is still in a relatively complete shape. It is believed that this place contains hair relics and left hand relics of the Lord Buddha. In addition to the Phra That Chom Chaeng, there is also a large standing Buddha image of Naga posture enshrined with the Lord Buddha. Inside the temple, there is Luang Por Jom Jang Statue, which is about 6oo years old. Location : Cho Hae Subdistrict, Mueang Phrae District, Phrae Contact Information : 054-599024 26 n Phu Phaya Pho The highest point on Choeng Thong - Kio Kian route which is 1,350 meters high above sea level and is also the highest peak that divides the border between Phrae and Uttaradit. This area is a viewpoint that overlooks the mountains and forests as far as you can see until it reaches Sirikit Dam Reservoir. This is a forest with rare plants such as maple leaves, ferns, etc. and on both sides surrounded with plentiful nature. 2Route 1 Suan Hin Maharat Enjoy the imagination with a very large group of boulders, each with different shapes. These boulders look beautiful and exotic. The boulder around here can be found in nature such as limestone in the Triassic aged around 250 million a year. It looks gray and they also found fossils of shellfish, which can symbolized this area as a shallow sea in the past. Location : The entrance of Doi Pha Khlong National Park Office, Long District, Phrae Contact Information : 097-9230491 2 Coral Reef Mountain Caused by the erosion of rocks over millions of years, the Coral Reef Mountain is a natural study route spanning 1,200 meters. Along the route one can enjoy refreshing air and the spray of water from the cave. You can walk along and reach a coral reef viewpoint. 3 n Ban Pin Railway Sta- tion It is a small train station with unique architecture. “The Bavarian Timber Frame House,” popular in the region of Bavaria Germany, was designed by German engineers who also constructed the railway tunnel at Khun Than Cave in Lampang Province. On June 15th, 1914, Ban Pin Railway Station was placed on the list of the 6 important stations in Thailand during the reign of King Rama VI. Ancient textiles in the Komol Ancient textiles Museum houses two hundred years and thousands of pieces. You can see unique patterns such as Lilac Chalking, Pak Waen, Water dropped, Worm legs, Flowers, etc. In addition, Komol Ancient Textiles Museum has sarongs available to tourists. 2Route 5 n Erawan Cave It is the most beautiful cave in Phrae province. It has a depth of 200 meters. Inside the cave, there is a spacious hall with stalactites and stalagmites. The most famous shapes are Erawan elephants and the pregnant woman. According to legend, this natural formation is of the legendary woman buried near the Yom River called Kaeng Luang. This station demonstrates beautiful European architecture preserved. It has received an award for outstanding artistic and architectural conservation from the Association of Siamese Architects of the year 2012. 7 n Phra That Huai O, Wat Sri Don Kham 2Route It is a thousand-year-old Phra That, or stupa, which houses the huge old relics of the Buddha’s breastbone. It was built around 536 ACE. The Phra That relics has been renovated several times. Currently, there is a cement base. The upper part is decorated with golden metal plates. Inside the temple, there is Phra Phutto, a wooden Lanna style Buddha statue made using a machete or a large knife, which was completed in 1 day. It has a bell made from bomb shells and a pleasant museum. Location : Huai O Subdistrict, Long District, Phrae Contact Information : 054-581278, 089-7695917 8 n Hong Seung Luang 23 It is a conservation area where visitors learn folk art and culture of Long District. It was founded by Mr. Jirasak Thanumat. He started with playing native music as a child where he played with elder until he formed a band to play in the school. Because musical instruments were expensive, the music teacher supported the band and helped developing them and create Thai musical instruments. They have made instruments by themselves in order to use and sell until now. These instruments are available to tourists. At present, it’s become a learning center for Thai music in Phrae Province. 2Route 9 n Phra That Laem Li This Phra That hold the relics of 5 Buddhas during 1070 ACE. There are the relics of the Buddha’s relics. Located in the Don Liem Leam Cape in the middle of the Yom River, Phra That Laem Li is almost surrounded by water. On the eastern side of the Yom River, there is a Vihara inside the temple with the reclining Buddha. The God Vatthaphat and the God of the Martyrs, and the God of Rain. Every year, Gong will be beaten in the parade, bringing a boat procession, where people eat food on the Yom River and proceed to the temple. The Southern Temple Cruise in July has been passed down for many generations. Legend says that when the Lord Buddha passed by city people have offered “Salaeng flower.” The temple is named after the flowers that the villagers offered as a Buddhist worship. “Wat Salaeng Museum” there is the Buddha’s footprint of Salung Luang (The largest bronze water bowl in the country) and on the back of the temple there is a hot spring. 11 n Phra That Doi Noi It’s located in Ban Pin Subdistrict, Long District, Phrae Province, which has an ancient relic that has the legend of the coming of the Lord Buddha. In addition Luang Pho Phut Pinthong Nakaraj holds a large buddha statue. From the courtyard there is a beautiful view of Ban Pin District. It is an ancient temple and a Luang Klang Wiang Long temple. Created during the 17th century, Phra That Hi Soi is the heart of the city. The town overlaid by the heart of the city or banyan tree.
