04 Reading the text Track 54 A recent opinion piece published in JAMA Favial Plastic Surgery suggests that a growing number of patients are seeking cosmetic procedures to look like their filtered selfies. According to clinicians, these photos typically feature ‘‘fuller lips, bigger eyes, or a thinner nose’’ than the patients have in real life. Written by a team of doctors and researchers in the dermatology department at Boston University’s school of medicine, the piece names apps with augmented reality filters like Snapchat and photo-editing tools like Facetune as example of ‘‘accessible’’ technologies that people are using to ‘‘alter their own appearance’’ The authors write Apps like Snapchat and Facetune, allow users to ‘‘alter’’ their appearance instantly, in a way that they believe ‘‘[conforms] to an unrealistic and often unattainable standard of beauty’’. The authors go on to argue that this trend is ‘‘alarming’’ because filtered selfies and the ‘‘pervasiveness’’ of these digitally altered images blur the line between reality and fantasy, which may ‘‘act as a trigger’’ or even ‘‘lead to body dysmorphic disorder’’. a) Do you know someone who has done any kind of surgery? _________________________________________________________________________________ b) What is your opinion about who does plastic surgery? _________________________________________________________________________________ c) In your opinion, why people are changing appearance according to selfies? _________________________________________________________________________________ 05 Exercises 1- Unscramble the dialog To eat here Thanks. The Pilgrims in England wanted the freedom to worship as they pleased. They decided to leave England in a small ship called the Mayflower. They sailed across the Atlantic Ocean. The difficult journey lasted over 2 long months. Life was very hard on the Mayflower. Many people got sick and one man died. The pilgrims finally reached America and named their new community Plymouth. The Pilgrims’ first winter was very cold and half of the Pilgrims died. In the spring a Native American named Samoset greeted the pilgrims in English. The pilgrims fed Samoset and let him stay overnight in one of their houses. Samoset then introduced the Pilgrims to another helpful Native American named Squanto. Squanto became the Pilgrims’ best friend. He taught them how to plant corn, hunt and he CLEVER - INGLÊS NO SEU RITMO 89 EIGHTY-NINE

lived with them for the rest of his life. Many pilgrims said they would not have been able to survive without his help. Later Squanto helped the pilgrims make a peace treaty with the Wampanoag tribe. 13 04 Reading the text Unit Track 64 Meeting the wife and dog My first real job as an adult was at a motel. I had talked with the manager months prior and told him I’d be looking for a job in September 2016. The interview was so casual, I didn’t have a doubt in my mind that the job would be mine. The interview consisted of me filling out an application, meeting the manager and his dog. If the dog hadn’t had accepted me, I probably wouldn’t have gotten the job. The manager was thrilled to have someone to take the position and wanted me to come back the next day to meet his wife. They both work as managers and live on the property. I went back the next day to meet her, and I can tell she was a serious person, in an intense, ‘‘don’t cross me’’ sort of way. She told me: - no perfume, no jeans, no hoop or dangle earrings, and no makeup. I didn’t know that was so unusual during my interview, but it turns out that not only was that super inappropriate, probably illegal - but no other employees had been told the same thing. She also pointed out: no lowcut tops and looked at what I was wearing very critically. Nothing was wrong with it, but some people can’t ever be happy. It was weird to be interviewed by a Married couple and their dog for a job anything other than a pet sitter. 05 Exercises 1- Use the possessive case according to the example.
