6 June - December 2018 by: Celyn Mae Galamgam It’s an unspoken golden rule in education that reading is one of the most im- portant skills to develop in all students. It is one of the primary ways we learn new things. Unfortunately, developing a child’s interest in reading isn’t easy. With the introduction of different technology and digital devices, turning the pages of books seems to be the most boring task you could ask a student to do. According to the 2012 National Readership Survey conducted by Na- tional Children’s Book Day (NCBD) in partner- ship with the Social Weather Stations, it re- vealed that there is a slight decline in reader- ship of the four different materials, namely books, newspapers, magazines and comics, with Metro Manila readers registering the sharpest discrepancy (from 99% to 93%). It also revealed that only 12% of all children read books every day. To renew the love and passion for ministration reading, the ad- and teachers of Timoteo Paez Elementary School have thought of a way in engag- ing students to read. That is, to turn the classrooms and hallways into a place for reading. The once dull and plain-painted walls turned into a gallery of colorful mosaics and murals of children’s stories. Students who used to loiter in hallways no longer do chit- chats but instead you’ll see them reading. The once unnoticed and dusty shelves have transformed into cabinets full of reading materials and manipulatives. Look above the ceilings and you will no longer see cob- webs but words of wisdom. Plants are no longer the star of our garden but the verses of poems. Corners of rooms which used to be a hide-your-trash-here place has become reading nooks with pillows and foamy mats. Who will dare to throw their trash in an engaging place like this? Our stairways? Well, they are no longer just for stepping up and down. Now, they seem like piles of books and stairs of knowledge leading us to a greater learning. Truly, our school has transformed from a piece of concrete building into an avenue of learning. Reading has never been this extensive and engag- ing. So if you have a chance to be in Malibay, why don’t you pay our school a visit?
June - December 2018 7 by: ASHLEY M. SUMADLAYON, Remember when you have to cram hundreds of pages of textbook or lessons into your head before every big test? You may have noticed that when you try to learn something new you prefer to learn by listen- ing to someone talk to you about the information. These techniques are called learning styles. Learning style can be described as a set of factors, behaviors, and attitudes that helps a person learn for a given situation. Styles influence how students learn better so knowing your own learning style can be an advantage to you. So what are the types of learning styles? As early as 1920’s, psychologists had de- veloped the VAK Model. Ac- cording to the model, most of us prefer to learn in one of three ways: Visual, Auditory or Kinesthetic. If you are a visual learner, you learn by reading or seeing pictures. You un- derstand and remember things by sight. You can pic- ture what you are learning in your head, and you learn best by using methods that are pri- marily visual. You like to see what you are learning. If you are an auditory learner, you learn by hearing and listening. You understand and re- member things you have heard. You store information by the way it sounds, and you have an easier time understanding spoken instructions than written ones. You often learn by reading out loud because you have to hear it or speak it in order to know it. If you are a kinesthetic learner, you learn by touching and doing. You understand and remember things through physical movement. You are a \"hands-on\" learner who prefers to touch, move, build, or draw what you learn, and you tend to learn better when some type of physical activity is involved. You need to be active and take frequent breaks, you often speak with your hands and with gestures, and you may have diffi- culty sitting still. In conclusion, learning styles are guides on how you can improve your learning. You may prefer one style of learning for one task, and a combination of others for a different task. So what is your learning style?
