2020 Annual Report YEAR ONE GLORIA BRAND, DIRECTOR BRIGHAM AND WOMEN’S HOSPTAL |
Program in Opioid and Pain Innovation (POPI) August 2020 Annual Report POPI at Brigham Health is a center for scientists, clinicians, researchers and investigators who are interested in developing and advancing innovative ideas and research to solve the opioid use disorder epidemic and improve patient outcomes in pain management. POPI was officially established in September 2019, and currently consists of about 42 innovators at Brigham Health who work in the opioid and pain space. The mission of POPI is to lead the evolution of research in pain management and opioid use disorder (OUD) within the U.S and around the world. POPI meets quarterly to establish priorities for the program and share information and collaborative ideas. Under the leadership of Scott Weiner, MD, MPH, Medical Director of the Brigham Comprehensive Opioid Response and Education (B-CORE) Program and administrative direction of Gloria Brand, MPA, Program Director, Program in Opioid and Pain Innovation (POPI). POPI’s innovators have met four times since the program’s inception and established the following research areas of focus: Program in Opioid and Pain Innovation (POPI) Research Areas of Focus • Medication for • Acute Pain • Machine OUD • Chronic Pain Learning/Artificial • Opioid Intelligence • Psychosocial Support Dependency • Acute Indicators • Genetic Testing for OUD • Addiction Psychiatry (tapering included) • Data resources • Prediction of OUD beyond BWH • Co-occurring Disorders Screening Innovative Data Programs Resources • Women’s • Cancer Pain health • Trauma • Women’s Personalized Maternal Medicine Child/perinatal Treatment of OUD BRIGHAM AND WOMEN’S HOSPITAL
POPI’s overarching objectives are as follows: Create opportunities for collaboration: Per an interactive group SWOT analysis of POPI’s current infrastructure, POPI has established 3 ad hoc committees to focus its work in addition to its quarterly meetings: 1. Steering Committee • Create Long-Term Goals • 3-5 Year Priorities • Key Initiatives for Year 2 2. Resource and Allocation • Monitor and advise on fundraising and monetary resources • Grant Funding Opportunities • Funding Priorities 3. Research Capacity and Development: • Advise on research needs • Research Collaboration Opportunities • Capacity Building within POPI Each ad hoc committee will meet quarterly and report out at quarterly POPI meetings with workgroup progress. As of this report the Steering Committee had its first meeting in August 2020. Examples of other collaborations from forged relationships via POPI include: Innovators who oversee the Brigham Bridge Clinic and innovators who help spearhead the Allergy and Clinical Immunology department. This new relationship between POPI innovators inspired an
investigation of the prevalence of drug allergies in this cohort and potential associations with healthcare utilization outcomes. Another forged relationship via POPI includes a partnership between the leaders of the clinical research department at Brigham and leaders of the Anesthesiology Perioperative and Pain Medicine group at BWH. This collaboration was inspired by a grant opportunity listed via POPI’s communication - emails and newsletters. The innovators for this collaboration plan to study interventions to reduce persistent opioid use in post-orthopedic surgery patients. Dr. Jeffrey Schnipper, Director of Clinical Research, BWH Hospitalist Service and Dr. Richard Urman, Director of Anesthesia for the BWH Center for Perioperative research were successfully awarded the R34 NIH grant to pursue this work. These collaborations are examples of POPI’s aim to reduce the silos in the workspace of opioid and pain innovation at BWH. Developing Scientific Projects: In October 2019, POPI along with the Brigham Research Institute hosted its first McGraw Family Opioid Innovator Awards Shark Tank Event. This event, with a generous donation from the McGraw family (two $50,000 awards which included $25,000 from the BRI) gave an opportunity for POPI innovators as well as other researchers, scientists and investigators of the Brigham interested in opioid and pain research to compete for funding. One award was given to Dr. Joji Suzuki, BWH Director, Division of Addictions Psychiatry for his project: Cannabidiol as an adjunct to sublingual buprenorphine for the treatment of opioid use disorder: An exploratory double-blind placebo-controlled trial. Another award was given to Athena Petrides, PhD, BWH Director of Pathology Informatics for her project: Automated Result Interpretation of Opioid Drug Testing Panel for Clinicians to Improve Interpretation and Communication of Urine Drug Toxicology Results POPI will host its second Shark Tank in October 2020 (virtually). Accepted applicants will compete for the same amount. In addition to the Shark Tank, POPI is planning to create an infrastructure for fellowship opportunities as well as RO1 opportunities for potential federal funding in the opioid and pain research space. POPI also is also proud to be a component of the Stepping Strong/Injury Prevention program and its Substance Use Disorder (SUD) initiative for BWH. Communication and upcoming events POPI produces a quarterly newsletter which features relevant news along with innovator publications, federal and private funding opportunities and opioid and pain related events.
Events scheduled for the remaining of the calendar year include: August 31st- International Overdose Awareness Day September 17th – Opioid Innovation and Recovery Symposium (in honor of September Recovery Month) October 2-4 - MIT Grand Hack – Opioid Track October 20th – McGraw Opioid Innovator Award Shark Tank October 29th – POPI Quarterly Meeting November – POPI Ad hoc Research Capacity and Development Meeting November– POPI Ad hoc Resource and Allocation Meeting POPI’s Next Steps are to establish an official website www.popi.bwh.harvard.edu and a twitter social media presence which are both underway. POPI will also interactively construct a focused strategic plan for year two via its innovators/ad hoc committees. A primary focus will also be to establish funding streams for administrative and support functions of the program. POPI is exploring federal grant mechanisms along with private to explore funding for the program. A timeline for the calendar year of 2021 will be solidified at last the POPI quarterly meeting in October 2020.
