A Message from the President of the Novi Athletic Boosters Welcome to the 2020 Spring edition of the Novi Wildcats Sports Program. This is normally where I would welcome you to our beautiful Wildcat stadiums, courts, gymnasiums, or fields. Unfortunately, this Spring 2020 is not normal, as we all know. Therefore, this Novi Wildcats Sports Program that you hold in your hands is a unique edition. As sad as we all are that spring sports were cancelled because of COVID-19, we know social distancing is more important right now. Staying safe and at home is vital, but we still miss spring sports! As the president of the Novi Athletic Boosters, I was at a loss on how to proceed and lead this season without the sports that the NAB normally supports with concessions, spirit wear, sports passes, our sports program, etc. When sporting events are not allowed to happen, what is the purpose of the NAB? I decided to review the mission statement to see if it could help with the goals of the boosters in these difficult times. “The mission of the Novi High School Athletic Boosters is to support and promote our athletic programs throughout the Novi Community School District by encouraging and recognizing outstanding scholastic achievement, sportsmanship, and character both on and off the field, contributing to the spirit and enthusiasm of high school and middle school athletics, and providing a pathway for positive involvement by the community with Novi High School and Novi Middle School athletes.” This mission does not say anything about cheering on the athletes while they are playing their sport. The NAB’s mission is about encouraging our athletes and our community, on or off the field. After reviewing the mission of the Novi Athletic Boosters, I was reminded that the NAB does not just support the athletic events - its purpose is to support our athletes and our community. Currently, this is more important than ever before. Therefore, even though we are not able to have sporting events this Spring 2020 season, there is still a need for the Novi Athletic Boosters. At a time like this, when our graduating seniors will never step back onto the Wildcat stadiums, courts, or fields, encouraging, recognizing, and uplifting them is crucial. Novi High School Class of 2020: this Spring 2020 Edition of the Novi Sports Program is dedicated to you! The Novi Athletic Boosters have not forgotten how important it is to celebrate our spring sports and our senior spring athletes. I am sorry you are missing out on so many milestones in your last days of your senior year, however, we hope you will cherish your memories of playing the sports you love while at Novi. We have not forgotten your accomplishments, athletic and otherwise, and we are proud that you wore the Novi Wildcat uniform! Thank you for letting us cheer you on. The Novi Athletic Boosters will always be one of your biggest fans! Good luck with all your future endeavors and remember to come back to visit your Novi alma mater! Once a Wildcat, always a Wildcat! Sincerely, Sheri VanKirk President, Novi Athletic Boosters 2019 – 2020 NAB Board President – Sheri VanKirk Trustee – Tom O’Connor Vice President – Mark Tobias Trustee – Niki Parenti Treasurer – Joe Smythe Trustee – Angie Shires Secretary – Jamie Young
Administration Dear Class of 2020 Spring Athletes, On behalf of the staff, students and administration, I would like to extend sincere empathy to you as you endure the loss of your senior sports season. I realize how heartbreaking this is especially due to a pandemic that is out of our control. I must be honest that I will terribly miss this spring that electrifying feeling I had in the stands watching as you scored a goal, made a challenging catch, served an ace or ran so fast that I could see your heart beating through your jersey. I implore you not to allow this adverse circumstance to diminish the pride you have in being a Wildcat student athlete. Over the years, I have watched you demonstrate incredible teamwork, honesty, respect, integrity, responsibility, accountability and loyalty. Be encouraged to reflect Nicole Carter on those cherished memories and allow them to propel you in being an overcomer. Don’t allow Principal Covid-19 to define your present or your future. Seniors, I am confident that you are destined for continued greatness. It has been an absolute honor and privilege to serve you. I wish you the very best on all future endeavors and always remember, “Once a Wildcats, Always a Wildcat!” Yours in leadership, Nicole Carter Principal John Zabick Ron Kane Dr. Melissa Jordan Katy Dinkelmann School Resource Officer Assistant Principal Assistant Principal Assistant Principal From the Superintendent To our Novi Community School District class of 2020 spring athletes: School teaches lessons. Some lessons are harder than others. The lesson that you learned this spring is that life is not fair. You spent years playing a sport that you loved. You spent hours this year preparing for your final spring season as a Novi High School Wildcat. And it was taken away. That is not fair. As you graduate from Novi High School my hope is that you have athletic memories to look back on. Memories of teammates. Memories of coaches. Memories of games and matches and events that will carry you for a lifetime. Hang on to those memories. Cherish them. Cherish the teammates and coaches that helped along the way. I appreciate all that you have given to our community. If you move into the next phase of your life with the same commitment that you showed as a Novi High School Wildcat you will undoubtedly be successful. from the Athletic Director To Our Spring (Senior) Student/Athletes: We Repeat What We Don’t Repair....... In a similar fashion to an athletic competition, life can change at a moment’s notice. During the week of March 16, 2020, it did just that for all of you. A part of your innocence was taken away from you with the announcement that high school sports in the State of Michigan have been postponed indefinitely. “How can this happen,” “This was our year to win it all,” “I am a senior captain this year, we have to play,” “what will we do without high school athletics,” were just some of the many phrases we both heard and verbalized ourselves in the past days. The landscape has changed and not just within the realm of high school athletics, but within our country and global society as an entire entity. The question now becomes, where do we go from here. We Repeat What We Don’t Repair......... Naturally, you have every right to be upset, angry, frustrated, and every other emotion which can accompany a piece of youthful innocence which you no longer possess. That is your right and you deserve the ability to mourn and bemoan that which once belonged to you and your teammates. However, that time has now passed. If each of you have learned nothing else from your time spent engaged in high school athletics, let it be this-loss provides opportunity and you each have no greater opportunity sitting before you than the days and weeks ahead. How will you each deal with the adversity that currently lies before you. Undefeated seasons, Conference, District, Regional, and MHSAA Championships are the easy things in life. Not easy to secure, but quite palatable to accept. The true test of our high school athletic character is how we both meet and deal with adversity. Right now, you are dealing with quite possibly a more difficult form of it than you ever imagined possible We Repeat What We Don’t Repair........ None of us can predict when Covid-19 will be in our rearview mirror and become a life lesson for us and future generations. This may still take time for our medical professionals to sort out and conquer (and I do believe they will). However, the question now becomes, what are each of you doing in the interim? How have you turned this loss into a platform for others? No different than any previous athletic competition, what have you learned from this situation and how will you now use that acquired knowledge to assist those less fortunate than yourself. The easy thing to do is to sit around and sulk, feel cheated and continually ask yourself, “why me?” You know the answer to “why me?” It is because this is who you are and this is what we do, all of us. Unfortunately, loss is a part of life and if you remember nothing else, please remember this. Sometimes we have to go through fire to make steel. We Repeat What We Don’t Repair....... This is probably not your first loss in life and undoubtedly, it will not be your last. Make no mistake about it, this is a big one to endure. Nobody is mitigating that. However, I would admonish you to remember that each loss in life allows more resiliency when encountering the next. Each setback can be a springboard forward concerning not only athletics, but in life and society as well. The challenge now is not what will all do without high school athletics, but rather what will do without high school athletics. In the bigger picture, high school athletics may seem trivial at this critical juncture and some may dismiss them as irrelevant. However, the lessons we have all learned from them are not and each of you will implement them to meet, greet, and defeat this challenge head on. I am convinced of that. All my best, together. “Iron Sharpens Iron” ......”One Athlete Sharpens Another Athlete” Stay Strong and Persist, Brian Gordon CAA Director of Athletics Brian F.
