VIDEO JANUARY 1991 West 34 Street, New York, NY 10001. We'll print the best of them in upcoming issues. e A quick footnote to our September feature, “Beating the Beta Maze.” Your overwhelming response to our plea that Sony sell its beautiful new 15th Anni- versary Beta machine in this country did not go unheeded. As you'll see from Sony exec Jim Bonan’s letter in “Feedback,” it will hit these shores in the spring or early summer of 1991. Coverage of the anniversary Beta model drew nearly 200 letters begging that it be brought to the U.S.—and they’re still coming in! That same “Beta Maze” triggered a range of other reader reactions. Such as? Such as 2,000 re- quests for the Beta movie catalog published by Adray Appliance of Dearborn, Michigan. And such as 300 requests for Beta tapes from Beta & More of Chanute, Kansas, including some from such farfluny video outposts as the Phi- lippines and Australia. ° In a quandary over which of the racy new subcompact camcorders to buy? Check out this issue’s “Subcompact Shootout.” Our primary emphasis was on optical characteristics (zoom, autofocus, macro shots, etc.), but we also ran comparative hands-on tests of camcorder comfort, evaluating such factors as convenience of operational controls, balance and so on. What did we learn from this first-of-its-kind showdown? That we can give you plenty of guidance on what to look for in specific models, but also that you'd best be prepared to conduct your own shootout as you sally forth on a camcorder shopping trip. The Critics’ Choice: The worlds first dual-deck VCR Here’s what the experts are saying about the VCR-2: “Produces stronger color in copies and maintains resolution levels well. . .. For convenient one-touch copying, this machine is the only one of its kind, and is recommended.” Video Magazine “Go-Video has come out with a dual-deck VCR system that makes copying tapes a , snap.... The duplicate’s picture quality is close to the original. And the system's Dolby noise-reduction circuitry makes for dramatically improved sound.” Business Week “Multi-generation tape copying was impressive. Fifth-generation tapes looked better than most second-generation.” Videography “One of the best new products of the year...” Popular Electronics “The unit deserves praise, especially for its simplicity and straightforward design. ... The supplied remote control has been carefully laid out. ... It is, as people say, idiot-proof-” Video Review “Its introduction this month represents a significant achievement for the American electronics industry.” The New York Times “The veteran VCR manufacturers of the world could learn a lesson or two about the needs of the American consumer by taking a look at the extras [reference guides and videotape] included with this unit:” The Gadget Guru Now judge for yourself. Each camcorder should have been able to handle the change smoothly, quickly and accurately. Recently, manufacturers have begun to replace the traditional manual focus ring with powered focus buttons. Our Manual Focus test was aimed chiefly at this type of system. Starting with each camcorder's focus set at infinity, each panelist attempted to focus manually on a monthly calendar page, the thin grid lines of which demand sharp focus. Camcorders able to focus to the face of the lens and shift into macro with minimal effort received the highest marks. The Iris/BLC test gave us insight into the subcompacts’ ability to cope with backlit subjects, such as might be encountered on a beach. Each panelist tracked a subject who moved between the panelist and the bright midday sun, the light from which tends to over- whelm facial features. On many Na- tive American reservations a permit to shoot still pictures costs a dollar or two, while a camcorder permit costs ten times as much. And in many places overseas, such as most of India’s monu- ments (including the Taj Mahal), the authorities strictly forbid camcorders, while giving free rein to still cameras. Indeed, it was at the Taj that I stumbled across a way to add a new di- mension to my travel videos— myself. I was standing in awe of this magnificent mausoleum when a friendly Indian of- fered to take my photo in front of the palace. It turned out to be a classic shot. Audiences want to know about the in- teraction between cameraman and sub- jects—that’s why first-person documen- taries with the journalist appearing on camera have become more popular.
