It also eliminates the picture flicker produced by PAL’s 50- Hertz field rate, a phenomenon which doesn’t seem to bother Europeans, but which gave us headaches for our first few days in Germany. At least some of the PALPlus technology is said to be adaptable to NTSC, suggest- ing that North American viewers might someday see similar improve- ments. Thomson and Philips widescreen receivers, among others, will be able to handle both PALPlus and MAC transmissions. Satellite TV is alive and well in Europe —so well, in fact, that Germans have bought almost as many satellite dishes in the last two years as Americans have since satellite TV began in 1978. Europeans : are embracing satellite TV for two reasons. First, their terrestrial broadcast systems offer less program variety and fewer channels than Americans enjoy. Second, their higher-powered satellites let them re- ceive clear signals on dishes only one to three feet in di- ameter. A typical dish/receiver package costs about $700. Although European viewers have 15 satellites to choose from, most are content with fixed-position dishes that receive signals from only one or two satellites.
