A survey of several consumer tape | manufacturers found no real disagree- ment with the Sony study. “Fifteen years is as good a guess as anybody’s,” notes Andrew DaPuzzo, director of sales for BASF videotape products. ‘Naturally | the environment in which the tape is stored is a major factor.” TDK tape product manager Steve Diamond says he knows of no published data on tape life expectancy by his com- pany. He adds, however, that TDK does tell consumers they can expect at least 100 plays on a videocassette if good stor- age practices are followed. Maxell also declines to predict a life expectancy for its tape products. “The type of testing Sony has done tells part of the story and not all of the story,” says George McBride, manager for engineer- ing at Maxell. “That’s the reason until we have the data to back the statement we will say our tape will last only as long as it has lasted. I would never commit to a statement like 15 years. I agree with them that it should last at least 15 years but I don’t have any evidence at this point.” At 3-M, spokesman Phil Hage says he thinks the Sony study is conservative since many tapes have remained in good shape for longer than 15 years. “You are not going to get us to say that tape lasts forever or it’s only good for 15 years, but the research our laboratory has done shows results that are consistent with what Sony has found,” says Hage.
