BY LOU KESTEN VIDED GAMES BUUNGE BAGK Atari, Sega and Nintendo challenge a new generation of joystick junkies with sleek systems, light guns and 3-D Long, long ago, in the early ’80s, video games were the hottest trend in America. It seemed as though most teenagers, and more than a few adults, were spending mountains of quarters to play Asteroids, Donkey Kong, Pac-Man and the like. As Martin Amis wrote in his book Invasion of the Space Invaders, “Hospitals are fighting an epidemic of new maladies—Asteroid El- bow, Pac-Man Finger, Galaxian Spine . . Police stations maintain swelling dossi- | ers on Space Invader-related crimes. . . Worldwide, the space-game racket turns over more money than films or records.” Atari’s 2600 Video Computer System (VCS) invaded millions of homes, with machines worth $1.7 billion sold in 1982 alone. Mattel’s Intellivision and Coleco’s Colecovision were jockeying for their slices of the home video pie, while dozens of software companies were springing up overnight to fuel the mania for new games. Unfortunately, low-quality software abounded, and consumers grew dis- enchanted. Many game junkies shifted to the more sophisticated software appearing for personal computers. Still, video games held a loyal audi- ence. Atari continued to stock arcades, and Sharpshooter: Atari's XE game system, for $150, comes with a light gun as well as a joystick and a keyboard. The inventive tracking shots may remind some of Raising Arizona, made by Raimi’s pals Joel and Ethan Coen (both of whom cut their teeth on the original Evil Dead). There are plenty of memorable images: Ash being attacked by his headless, chainsaw-wielding girlfriend; Ash being taunted by a mounted deer head; and best of all, aduel between Ash and his own right hand. As the hero himself observes, “Groovy.” Some of the gags—a woman attacked by trees, the constant chatter from the demons in the basement—are a little too reminiscent of the first film, suggesting that Raimi is low on ideas. The movie is bogged down by the introduction of two redneck characters—obvious demon fod- der. Still, Raimi displays more imagination than most Hollywood blockbusters, and he caps the mayhem with the wildest twist ending I’ve ever seen in a horror movie.
