Function keys are what separate the high-tech users from no-tech users. While some are in video-heaven when they can control everything from a sin- gle remote without the need to decipher small labels or deal with multifunction keys (let alone a manual), videophiles will fight to the death to preserve fea- tures like indexed search, slow motion, frame advance and other indispensable functions. Can a single remote make both groups happy? To our surprise, we found that the answer is yes. Manufacturers are design- ing simple, easy-to-use universal re- motes that also let users map special functions to specific keys. For example, in TV mode, VCR keys can be assigned extra TV functions; and in VCR mode, the volume, mute, recall and other TV- function keys can be used to control VCR functions. To simplify matters, and protect their research, some manufacturers no longer publish tables of function codes. Instead, they provide an 800 number to help map your favorite functions. But you still have to punch all those keys. Except in the case of Gemstar. The company that gave us VCR Plus has a better way. The base of its Control Tow- er remote has a microphone that you use to program the remote directly over the phone. You answer a few questions about your equipment, hit two keys, and put the phone over the remote\u2019s micro- phone. The Gemstar computer looks up the proper codes for your equipment and programs the remote with beeps and squeaks. It worked so well that other manufacturers may have to adopt a sim- ilar system to remain competitive. What do you do with a remote that doesn\u2019t have proper codes for your equipment? With an older remote, you set it aside and buy a new upgradable re- mote. It will probably be cheaper and more functional. However, most new re- motes are upgradable. If it doesn\u2019t have a code for your present components or components you plan to buy, you can send it back to be upgraded at no cost. But sending it back and forth through the mail takes at least a couple of weeks.
