Live Project : Made of Waste Designing For Dementia 1

2

Project Overview The Brief Exploration The initial brief outlined the creation of a safe social space for dementia patients Experimenting with palletes and exploring joinery details in palettes resulted in (at Heeley City Farm) by using fly-tipped waste materials like palletes and tyres creation of multiple ideas of constructing walls with palletes. (from AMEY). However, upon further investigation, palletes did not prove to be efficient con- struction materials for a building that needed to weatherproof and insulated. Research by Design Three Simple Solutions Meanwhile, research on dementia friendly and vandal-proof environments further revealed that palletes were unsuitable. Instead of one complicated solution, three simple solutions were produced to A more conventional method of construction was proposed for a building and address client needs : semi-enclosed space that could save as a haven for those with dementia. Timeline & Process 4

Exploring Pallet Connections The key factors considered were: - Ease of construction A chief part of the Live Project process was a exploration of how palletes - Ensuring smooth surfaces (Dementia Friendly) connect with one another. - Limiting to a minimum number of joints (to avoid seepage) Experiements were made to understand how joints could work and how the wood- en surfaces could be maximised. 5

Activities & Layouts Reading Sessions Board Games Watching Movies Reading Sessions: Group Singing Reading sessions can help improve cognitive abilities. Also, a lot of people report having seen positive results like increased happiness levels or improved ability among patients af- ter they’d been to poetry reading sessions. Used for : Relaxation, Cognitive improvement Board Games: Apart from popular board games, there are lot of games designed for those with dementia. Used for : Reminiscence Therapy, Socialization, Relaxation Watching Movies: Watching movies can not only be enjoyable for the patients but can help them reconnect with their past. Used for : Reminiscence Therapy, Relaxation Group Singing: Group singing is a popular activity used to engage dementia patients. Also, the activity seems to stir happy feelings among the facilitators as well rendering this a rewarding experience for everyone involved. Used for : Reminiscence Therapy, Socialization 7

Pallets - Potential Issues Upon, further thought and discussion, pallets were deemed unsuitable for the project as they would be unable to allow for insulation and waterproofing. Using pallets might also make the process of building the structure more difficult. 8

Proposed Design The final design proposal included a conventional way of construction for the walls and roof but provided the option of using gravel from Amey for foundation construction. Proposed Wall Construction Proposed Foundation Design Proposed Roof Design 9

Furniture Design For Interior The modular furniture is made out of pallets. It can be modi- fied to accomodate all the functions proposed for the indoor space. 11
