Among other things, he is an eminent lawscholar, author of many classic works in the profession as well as human rights activist of many years standing.Born in Warri to Itsekiri parents, he attended Government College, Ughelli from September 1954 to December1959. After a brief stint as a Customs Clerk, and later as a Programmes Operator with the then Nigeria Broadcast-ing Corporation (N.B.C) in Ikoyi, he obtained admission as part of the very first batch of students into the Facultyof Law of the University of Ife in September, 1962. He enjoys the distinction of being the only Law student from aNigerian University to have obtained an Upper Second Division in 1965. Encouraged by his achievement, he proceeded to the Nigerian Law School for his professional training and wascalled to the Bar in July 1966. Once again, in the 1966 Nigerian Bar Examinations, he won the Willoughby prizefor the best overall performance and the Sweet & Mazwell prize for the best performance in Revenue Law. The then young and budding scholar went into the ivory tower in September, 1966 when he was employed asan Assistant Lecturer in the Faculty of Law, University of Ife. The employment provided him an opportunity to un-dertake post graduate studies when he proceeded to Cambridge University. He obtained the ‘LL.B’ (a post-gradu-ate degree now called LL.M) in 1967 and a Ph.D in 1970. He returned to Ife in 1970, where he rose to the position of Professor in 1979, and became acting Dean andlater the substantive Dean of the Faculty of Law in the following years, 1979-80 and 1981-82. When the then mili-tary government of General Yakubu Gowon established the University of Benin in 1970, he was invited to becomeits first substantive Professor and Dean in October 1982, a position which he held until October 1986. Professor Sagay (SAN) who is presently in private legal practice is a leading crusader for the rule of law, humanrights and social justice. He is also the author of numerous journal articles and well-known legal works. He hasalso been involved in civil advocacy to rid the nation of corruption and corrupt practices. He was recently appoint-ed to head the presidential committee on anti-corruption. OLAOLU OLADIPO caught up with him and they talkedon several issues relating to the fight against corruption, the functions of the new committee and the approach be-ing adopted by the group of experts to meet the mandate set for it by the Presidency.
