FITNESS To crunch or not to crunch, that is the question. MAXIM fitness guru, Alexa, gives you the lowdown on all things abs and your core… C By ALEXA TOWERSEY ontrary to popular belief, your abs and your core are not one and the same. Your abs are that set of superficial muscles that, when bodyfat is low enough, typically grant you the elusive six-pack. Your core, on the other hand, while encompassing your abs, is the term that refers to the 360 degrees of stability around your spine including your hips and lower back. Sadly, having great abs doesn’t mean you have a strong core. And on the flip side, having a strong core won’t guarantee that you’ll be able to see it. But it is possible to have both – a six-pack to make you look like a God and a strong core to make you perform like one. 1 WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW The reason a lot of people fail to FUN FACT:THTVEHEANEVRUERYRMEWTYCBHOTIETRUNRHOESEEONGAHFUEBEABNPADSPAECOAETNHMRISDCSIISBNSXIDA,UWPSENSAIO.DTCCHSNKAIONNOTF develop abs can often be down to a lack of understanding of basic anatomy. Starting with the outer muscles, we have the Rectus Abdominus which is primarily responsible for Spinal Flexion or moving your ribs towards your hips (and the six pack look), and the External Obliques whose main jobs are rotation and lateral flexion i.e. bending your torso towards one side or the other. The deep inner unit has the Internal Obliques aiding their external brethren from underneath, the Transverse Abdominus (TA) which is responsible for stabilising your spine and works to pull your midsection in, and the lumbar multifidus (kind of like the TA of the lower back). 5 8 MAXIM.COM.AU

STYLE collection is a full circle moment. Now on the cusp of its 40th anniversary, Nautica has combed the archives to update some of their most sought-after vintage pieces for a new generation. Speaking of which, have you ever noticed how vintage clothing often feels heavier than something you bought recently? To maximise profits in the fast-paced fashion industry, brands are producing increasingly lighter and less durable clothing. On the contrary, the Nautica Yacht Club pieces feel gloriously weighty, using thick cottons and durable synthetics to withstand sun and saltwater. “We’ve gone to great lengths to make sure the fits and quality are as good as our ’80s and ’90s classics,” the brand tells us in a statement. “Our clothes are some the best on the market because we use thick and heavy fabric just like in the good old days.” The timing couldn’t be better, with American sportswear labels entering a new era of relevancy buoyed by Gen Zers discovering preppy clothing for the first time. STYLE Fashion’s favourite illustrator JUSTIN TEODORO chats to MAXIM about designing for BOSS, changing his career trajectory and dressing for confidence… By REILLY SULLIVAN N ew York-based artist Justin Teodoro is reviving the lost art of fashion illustration. Although he’s not technically a native New Yorker (he was born and raised in Canada), Teodoro is very much in the tradition of Big Apple icons like Keith Haring, whose doodle-style aesthetic he shares. Something of a renaissance man, Justin shifted from designing clothing to focussing on fashion illustration about a decade ago. It was a gutsy move, but powered on by early support on Instagram and existing connections in the industry, Teodoro soon found himself carving out a niche as fashion’s go-to illustrator. His doodles have adorned everything from department store windows to tote bags and mugs, while his subjects have grown to include pop culture icons from David Bowie to Kylie. In 2020, Justin drew the attention of BOSS chief brand officer Ingo Wilts, who tapped Teodoro to create a global collection for the brand sold in stores from Sydney to Shanghai. Here, Justin sits down with us to talk the power of social media and expanding into new mediums. 7 4 MAXIM.COM.AU

Your illustrations depict all types of fashion and pop culture figures. What makes a pop culture icon to you and what’s the trick to nailing an illustration of a famous person? I just have such a love and appreciation of pop culture so it’s fun for me to draw my pop culture heroes. Their impact is enduring because in so many different ways they shaped who I am as a creative individual. These drawings I do of them are my own way of paying tribute to my icons who I know inspired not only me but so many others. It can be hard to break down how to capture someone through illustration because it’s such a nuanced thing. My style is definitely not realistic so I don’t try to force a perfect portrait to happen. So whenever I draw anyone, famous or not, what is more important to me is that my drawings capture that energy and personality of the person. And once I get that, I feel the total feeling of the subject comes through in the illustration. MAXIM.COM.AU 75

In 2016, I gave birth to a beautiful boy and also got married. However, the realities of paying for our house and supporting our family loomed, and I soon worked out that if I kept working as a nurse it would be very challenging for us to sustain our lifestyle. Hungry for a career change, I took a risk and transitioned into a whole new occupation as a registered migration consultant in 2018. After completing all my studies and acquiring my registration, I made the decision to start my own business and christened it ImmiCo Consultancy. I was still working full-time as a registered nurse whilst working on my migration business in my spare time. Always a believer in thinking big, I took the plunge and rented an office suite in the city immediately, juggling morning shifts as a nurse with afternoons in the office. Through long hours and dedication, I managed to make it work and ran the business at a minimum cost until I steadily received a large enough income from the business to quit my day job. When that day finally came, I immediately resigned as a nurse and dove head-first into ImmiCo. Like nearly anything worth doing, I always knew that I would only be able to successfully grow the business if I gave it my full time and effort. Early in my career as a migration 7 8 MAXIM.COM.AU

The truth was I was a victim of domestic violence. It took me three years to have the courage to finally leave the marriage. I tried everything I could and remained silent about the violence to protect my family. Eventually, I woke up one day and realised I was doing it wrong. I had a young child who needed me and I did not want him to grow up witnessing that violence and thinking that it is okay. In my darkest moments, I would worry he may grow up without me. Who would be there to guide and teach him to be a valuable member of society one day, treating everyone with the kindness and respect they deserve? In 2019, I started my life again with just a piece of luggage I had brought back from an overseas trip to the Philippines. I came back to Australia and just never felt at home. That was the lowest period of my life. My outlet at that time was keeping myself busy at work. But whenever I finished the day at work, I knew that my mental health was rapidly declining. I was very depressed and suffered from anxiety. There were so many times I wanted to give up, but I kept looking at my son, who had also been diagnosed with Autism. There was so much on my plate, and I was by myself, homeless and staying temporarily on my brother’s corner lounge. I spent so much time crying and feeling sorry for myself and how my life had turned out. I blamed myself for making the wrong choices and decisions in life. However, I realised that you can only wallow in your own self-pity for so long. I knew deep down that feeling sorry for myself was not helping me at all. I looked in the mirror and started seeing the real me. I saw a beautiful, strong woman who did not love herself. From then on, I started learning how to love myself. I began reading self-help books and listening to podcasts. I invested in a gym membership and joined many different classes from pole dancing to Muay Thai, and even Latin dancing. I taught myself new ways of survival. I needed to see the beauty of this life. I started living with a purpose and that is to be not just a mother to my son but also to enjoy this journey we are all on. It was in 2021 when I started to see progress in my life. I moved into an apartment in Sydney with my 5-year-old son. It was just me and him. I isolated us from the noise of the world and took on the full parental responsibility by putting him at the core of my life. Everything I do is always for him. I continued working and carried on with my workouts. Funnily enough, it was actually Muay Thai where I focused the most out of all MAXIM.COM.AU 79
