Living in the house meant they could get a real sense of what they would want from an extension and how to maximise on space. Eventually with the help of an architect, ambitious plans for a double-height rear and side extension were drawn up to incorporate a large kitchen/ dining room – with a separate utility room, toilet and a snug downstairs, and a new main bedroom and en suite upstairs. However, with tweaked plans going back and forth, planning approval was to take over four years. ‘It was an extremely frustrating process,’ explains Louise. ‘Everything felt like it was on hold, but having years to think and plan the renovation meant that when our application was finally

We wanted our home to feel calm and welcoming with plenty of Louise Scandi-inspired pieces and colours site with a temporary kitchen, trying to work and home-school. But our builders, Mark Palmier and Associates, were true professionals, and when they were able to get back on site, they kept the project moving forward. As the build slowly progressed, it was really exciting watching as the house was transformed and our vision came to life.’ Now the renovation is finished, light- wood textures and pleasing tones layer each room with depth and warmth, and there is a relaxed flow throughout the house and into the garden, with each space effortlessly linking to the next. The couple spent a long time choosing kitchen cabinetry that had a timeless appeal, designed to make the most of the space with plenty of storage and a large island that takes centre stage. To complete the look, the couple fitted warm, wood-look porcelain tiles throughout the downstairs for a cohesive feel, and invested in stylish lighting and carefully selected furniture that will stand the test of time. ‘We wanted our home to feel calm and welcoming with lots of Scandinavian-inspired pieces and colours,’ explains Louise. ‘I’m also really influenced by nature, so love wood textures and bringing the colours from the outside world indoors.’ Six years on, a carefully curated, well- thought-out home has emerged. The Scandi influences work harmoniously with industrial elements as well as playful fabrics and pretty, feminine touches. ‘I have loved making all the interior choices, from the paint colours to the fixtures and fittings, and firmly believe the attention is in the detail,’ says Louise. ‘Sometimes it’s not the big-ticket items but the smaller features that make a home.’ And despite the setbacks along the way, the couple are more than happy with the end result. ‘It couldn’t have worked out any better, and was well worth the long wait,’ Louise adds. ‘We’ve gained the space we were looking for, and bought our vision for a stylish, family-friendly home to life.

Place the chickpeas, onions, leaves, spices, flour, baking powder and garlic into a blender, season with plenty of salt and pepper, then blend until a paste is formed but some texture kept. 2. Use an ice-cream scoop to shape the paste into balls, then place the falafel into the fridge to chill for at least 30 mins. 3. Remove from the fridge then deep fry in batches so they are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. 4.
