THE BARNES LEGACY CONTINUES As most of you know, Dave Barnes had won consecutive 50/50 raffles at our July, August, and September chapter meetings. Then in September he also won the Sportster given away by Fort Worth Harley-Davidson. As phenomenal as that streak was, that would not be the end of the the story. At the Newark Volunteer Fire Department’s Cruisin’ Days in October, Dave proved he hadn’t lost the magic as he won a weekend at the NRS Guest Ranch. Not to be outdone by her hubby, Lee Ann won the 50/50 raffle at the chapter picnic on the very next day! Chapter Christmas Party
The Geezer and his Harley I admit that I’m old. I can remember when Dwight Eisenhower was president. I remember when the words “under God” were added to the Pledge of Allegiance and the discovery and distribution of the Salk polio vaccine. I saw Mickey Mantle and Yogi in their prime at Yankee Stadium. I also remember . I lusted for a 1970 Plymouth Hemi Road Runner. Those were the days when cars weren’t ever left in stock condition for very long. Wheels and tires got changed, graphics may have been added, and engines were worked over for more power. With the pollution controls imposed on automobile makers in the mid- 1970’s, those glory days were over for car guys. But bikers, especially Harley folks, have stopped modifying and tinkering with their rides. Even though a few decades have passed since that hot rod era, we riders still enjoy adding bling and zing to our bikes. Now I admit that I am a Luddite. The Macmillan online dictionary defines a Luddite as “someone who does not like new technology and who tries to avoid using it.” OK, so I still use Windows 8 and have no desire to replace my older Android phone. And I prefer the air-cooled (or Twin-cooled), overhead-valve configuration the Harley-Davidson V-Twins, as opposed to a water-cooled, overhead valve, multi-cylinder machine from overseas. I find bikes from the Motor Company easy to work on and customize, and that’s a big plus. The next big revolution appears to be electric motorcycles. H-D will e be rolling out their LiveWire and I am looking forward to riding one. But I don’t expect to ever own one, and quite possibly the only electric vehicle I will ever own will be a mobility scooter. I just hope they will make chrome wheels and Stage 4 kits for those!
