Hungry Review Cartoon Strips/ Exercises Compiled by Khritkacha Duangsuwan 5931006020 To Ajarn Yodwadee Yimyoo  Senior Project 1006480 Cartoon Reading: Reading for pleasure School of Liberal Arts, Mae Fah Luang University Academic Year 2/2019

This report is a part of Senior Project 1006480 and has been composed with set of cartoon strips and exercises for use as a supplementary learning material for those who are interested in cartoon strips and self-learning. The purpose of this report is to provide general readers and learners to enjoy reading cartoons while learning English language exercise from this learning material which is based on the A2 – b1 level of Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CDFR). There are seven chapters which are all about reviewing foods and situations in daily life and each chapter has been consisted of cartoon strips, glossary sections and exercises. In addition, the conversations in cartoon are based on Basic English spoken language in order to motivate readers to imitate the forms of conversation for use in daily life, and glossary sections and exercises are focus on the vocabulary. The production hopes the report is useful for leaning.



A cartoon is drawings which represent a satirical, witty or humorous point. Some may have text bubble, and some may not. Some may appear in one frame, while others may fill in sequence. In other words, the strip cartoon is also called a comic strip. Normally, a comic strip can be presented in series or single, and they linked the story sequence and remain continue in daily or weekly. According to Sanaja (2018), there are numerous benefits from learning through cartoon. 1. Cartoons can increase creative thinking to readers. The creative plot or character designed in cartoon can help get the new knowledge to readers for adapting in their daily life. 2. Cartoons can reveal the reality of human life in an interesting ways and also reveal learners a wide variety of language. Mostly, the story in cartoons is based on human ordinary life; therefore, the language use in cartoons involved with the story. For example, most of manga (Japanese comic strip) may use Japanese language to relate the story of the Japanese daily life. Therefore, not only readers will learn the wide variety of language used from cartoons, they also learn the culture of countries through reading the comic. 3. Cartoons can modify the behavior and developing positive attitude of readers. Some cartoons provide a morality or the mood of the plot in the story; therefore, they can motivate readers to learn the moral in the story and adapt in ordinary life. So that cartoons can help develop the language skills of learners who often read.

This learning material aims to design cartoon strips for entertain and help produce relaxation to readers, and also provide the alternative exercises and glossary section for help increase ability of using English skills to them. The language use in the series of cartoon strips will be written in English language. For the forms and the structure, the designer focuses on spoken language in order to help strengthen the ability of English speaking skills to readers by read and imitate the conversations from this set of cartoon strips. In addition, vocabulary, phrase, idiom and conversation used in cartoons is based on the A2 – B1 level of Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CDFR), which means that is the level of English language users are approximately wastages to intermediate level. It is suit for students or general learners who use English in academic and in environment with the limited way. This series of the text bubbles filled in cartoon strips are arranged in 4 frames, vertical ways. The readers are required to read from one- by – one panel, starting from the left frame to right frame.

1. There are seven chapters contained in this learning material, and each chapter consists of comic strip and exercise. The readers have to read carefully on every single panel in order to remember and understand the given information in the comic strip. 2. After finish reading, the readers have to do multiple choice exercises. 3. The Glossary section and Learn some tips help readers learn some useful English words; phrases/idioms found in cartoon strip and also encourage readers to the strategies for speaking in public.
