What curse do you think did the narrator get? 5. Why did he suffer from this curse? 6. What incident made him realize this? 26
Read the selection that follows. Keep in mind the questions given you as your guide inreading. The Escape from the Curse Jason Cabanes (1)1987. It was an early December morning. The sun had been up for some time, but the wind was still chilling. I sat at the back of the school bus in solitude and in silence. I was trying to knot the straps of my backpack, but my hands were shaking uncontrollably. I also tried whistling “Life Dance”, but it was terribly out of tune. Everything I tried was futile. There was nothing I could do but surrender to the fear that was swiftly enveloping me. (2) I really did not want to face the day. I did not want to go to the Christmas party. It would not matter anyway. No one would ever notice if “Quiet Boy” was there or not. If only Mom’s word was not the law, I would just spend my morning watching Inspector Gadget on the TV instead. But as it was, I had to attend the party. (3) My knees knocked at each other as I slowly descended the bus. With small, scared steps, I ambled towards the auditorium. I was shaking so much, I wanted to crawl (I probably would have done so if it was not so shameful an act). As I got closer and closer to the auditorium, the gleeful voices of my classmates screaming in delight grew louder and louder as well. I began shaking even more. Horrific thoughts flooded my mind. I could picture it. They would have fun again. I’d be left all alone again. I’d be an outcast again. But I braved these thoughts and I continued until I got to the auditorium gate. It took ten eternal minutes and the Death March was over. But my agony has yet to come. 27
(4) Everything that happened in the party went as I expected it to(although I certainly did not hope for it). My classmates had so much funfrom the parlor games, from playing “tag” and “hide-and-seek, and fromchatting about the newest G.I. Joe figures. The teachers, the parents whowere there, and I guess everyone else had a grand time, too, except me.Throughout the whole time, I sat in one corner of the auditorium andtwirled spaghetti noodles with my fork. I pretended to have fun with myown little game. Deep inside me though, I was crying. I felt so alone. Iwanted to reach out to my classmates. I wanted to tell them, “I wannajoin!” But I was too excruciatingly shy. I was cursed with introversion. (5) Throughout my grade school life, the Christmas partyexperience reincarnated itself in many different situations. Sometimes itwould be during a classmate’s party, sometimes during sleepovers, andmost of the time, during recess and lunch breaks. It was always the samepainful experience of being an outcast for always the same reason- I wastoo shy. All of these pained me extremely. But they helped me to becomeaware of my introversion. As my awareness heightened, my want todiscover the reason for the curse grew. I believed that knowing where myintroversion was rooted was the first step I needed to overcome it. (6) The search was indeed a climb to Mt. Everest. I pondered aboutthe problem day in and day out, but I could not come up with a clearreason as to why I was such a person. That was until one early Octobermorning. I was then a high school sophomore. (7)There was only one bathroom ritual left before I could sprint toschool- combing my hair. I took my brush and started fixing my hair. But itwas too stubborn. When I wanted a strand of hair to go left, it went rightand vice-versa. I began to curse my hair. I had such stupid hair. It was stiffand all curly and dry. It looked so awful in the mirror. I caught a glimpse ofmy nose. I cursed my nose, too. Why wasn’t it like my Dad’s pointed,Spanish nose? I saw my lips. They were too big. I cursed them as well. Iwent on cursing everything about me. Then, I stopped. And I smiled. Itwas the most painful smile in my entire life, but I just had to smile. I hadfinally realized why I was an introvert. I felt inferior to my peers. I felt that Iwas not good enough to be with them. (8) As I had discovered where the curse came from, escaping itbecame easy. Throughout high school, I persevered to prove to myselfthat I was as good as everyone else. I devoured books, promptly did myassignments and researches, and developed my passion for writing poetryand prose. And it paid off. I reaped honor medals, constantly ensuredmyself of being in the top three in my class, and modesty aside, gotrecognized by my classmates for my English writing and speaking skills.By the end of my junior year in high school, I was ranked 29th in the wholebatch and my self-confidence was at an all time high (although I assure 28
you I never crossed the line between being confident and complacent). But more important than this, is that I finally had friends to be with. Nikko, the modern Mozart, Allen, the Math wizard, TJ and Gau, the tennis champions- all of them became curious about how “Quiet Boy” could function so silently, yet so efficiently. So, they started getting to know me. I guess they liked the person they found because I became part of the group. Finally, I was not in the painful silence of solitude. (9) I had escaped the curse, although not completely. Sometimes I still shake in fear of not being able to reach out to other people, especially when I’m at functions where I know no one. But I’m no longer the young Jason, the “Quiet Boy” who always succumbed to the curse. I have learned the magic words – “I’m as good as anyone else”. Whenever introversion comes to haunt me, I use the magic words to defiantly battle against the vile curse… and triumph.Post ReadingTask 1: Identifying the Main Idea and Supporting DetailsDirections: Reread the selection and try to find its main idea and minor details.Main Idea:________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Minor (Supporting) Details:________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 29

Text for Activity 1 Rajah Soleiman Teodoro Agoncillo Stand on the shore in Tondo, Manila, and you will be standing on the ground which is important in Philippine history as the shore of Mactan Island. Read this story and it will tell you why. In May, Goiti, together with his chief Miguel de Legazpi, returned to Manila. This time, the Spaniards had many warriors. With them were several hundred Visayans. When Rajah Lakandula saw the Spanish ships in the bay, he roqwed his banca to meet them. He promised Legaspi his loyalty and said he was sorry for what his nephew had done. He also promised to bring Suleiman with him the next day. Suleiman, to please his uncle, met Legazpi and promised to recognize the Spanish king as his ruler. With this promise, Legazpi, the next day, May 19, 1571, entered Manila and took it in the name of the King of Spain. Being a brave and patriotic man, Suleiman still thought that he must fight the Spaniards, whom he considered the enemies of the Filipinos. He then took a boat to Hagonoy, now in Bulakan, and Macabebe, now in Pampanga and took the chieftains of those barangays, to join him in his fight against the white men. With joy, the warriors of Hagonoy and Macabebe prepared their bancas and armed themselves. With these friends, Suleiman prepared to fight the Spaniards. At first, Legazpi did not want to fight, saying that he was a friend of the Filipinos. Suleiman did not believe him. When Legazpi sent a messenger to Suleiman to ask him why he was gathering his warriors, Suleiman, his face red with anger, said, “May the sun destroy me andmay I be disgraced before the eyes of the women. If I accept the friendship of 12
the Spaniards!” Then, turning to the messenger, he said: “Go! Tell thewhite man at the mouth of the channel of Bangkusay, I await him in battle. The Spanish ships soon came. With loud cries and shouts, the Filipinos fought bravelyusing bows and arrows. The Spaniards in their ships answered them byfiring cannons and muskets against the Filipinos. Many brave Filipinosdied. Let us get acquainted with Filipino Heroes. Their bravery and love of country mayserve as an inspiration to us all. While ReadingDirections: Read the selection entitled, “The Revolutionaries” and complete the chart that comes after the selection: The Revolutionaries They say there is nothing like oppression and tyranny to challenge the courage of those who would lead a nation out of darkness and despair to freedom. The first man to answer the call of our country and people is Dr. Jose P. Rizal, the national hero. He is also called “Indio Bravo,” and “the first Filipino.” He was persecuted as a student because of his brilliant mind. He had a secret pact with his brother Paciano to leave the Philippines and study abroad without the knowledge of their parents, so he could better prepare for the liberation of his race. His books prepared the minds of his people to fight against tyranny and abuse. Then, there was his four-year exile in Dapitan, considered a key moment in the hero’s life. Rizal’s sacrifice is an inspiration to all. He has left a legacy that is worthy of emulation by the young. In November 30 of every year, the nation commemorates the important role of Andres Bonifacio and other heroes who took up arms against Spain. He founded the Katipunan and led the cry at Balintawak, inspired by his reading of the history of the French Revolution. He died in 1897 and like Rizal, he, too, has set an example of a life sacrificed for love of country and people. 18
Then, there’s Marcelo H. del Pilar, journalist and leader of thepropaganda movement in Spain. In his writings, he reserved his tirades forthe parish priests who served the colonial government, and not the peopleand who, in fact, became the chief obstacle to the reforms advocated bythe propaganda movement. “La Solidaridad” showcases the works ofMarcelo H. del Pilar, Graciano Lopez-Jaena, Jose P. Rizal, Jose Ma.Panganiban, Ferdinand Blumentritt, and Mariano Ponce. “La Solidaridad”was the mouthpiece of the Filipino’s struggle for recognition andacceptance of the Philippines by Spain. Apolinario Mabini, the “Sublime Paralytic” was different was adifferent kind of hero. He was born to a farmer’s family on July 23, 1864 inTalaga, Tanauan, Batangas. He worked as a houseboy to be able tostudy. He finished as a scholar at Letran at the age of 17.He became aprofessor at 18 and finished Law later. He joined the reform movementand Rizal’s La Liga Filipina and supported La Solidaridad. He became aparalytic at age 31, but continued his work for the nation. He has sincethen been referred to as the “Sublime Paralytic.” Philippine Independence was proclaimed on June 12, 1898, thefirst democratic republic in Asia, but it was at war before it can even start. On August 22, 1898, Gen. Aguinaldo ordered the transfer of the seat ofgovernment from Cavite to Malolos, Bulacan and gathered the nationalcongress to draft a constitution. It took four months. After this, he waselected president. Twelve days later, the war with America began. The Filipino women too, have contributed their blood and tears tothe cause for which the men have died. Bonifacio’s widow, Gregoria deJesus or “Peyang”, stands for all the women of the revolution who wereeither widowed as she was, or lost their children. She wrote a poem of 40stanzas, where she expressed her feelings of grief over the death ofAndres Bonifacio. The Agoncillo sisters sewed the first Philippine flag inHong Kong in time for the inauguration of the first Philippine Republic inKawit, Cavite. Another brave woman was Melchora Aquino or “TandangSora” whose deeds are well-known. These are the men and women of the Revolution. If freedom isprecious to the Filipino, it is because it was bought at so high a price- noless than the blood of these noble men and women- great Filipinos all. 19
