My question to you... As I was preparing to lead the prayer group on the 12th April I was really drawn to these verses. Hebrews 10:24-25 (NIV) 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together,as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Matthew 28:18-20 (NIV) 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Acts 8:30-31(NIV) 30 Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the proph- et. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked. 31 “How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?” So he invited Phil- ip to come up and sit with him. I feel they are telling us to encourage each other, to be confident and courageous in our faith, to look for opportunities to inspire others to love and do good deeds. We have a responsibility to not just believe but to live out our faith every day in all we do. Jesus gave us the authority to “go and make disciples” so my question to you today is What are you doing to fulfil Jesus’ request? If you would like to talk about this, please do get in touch with a member of the ministry team- I am sure they would be happy to help. Gemma 4

Easter Egg Trail This Easter we were blessed with sunshine for our Easter Egg trail at St Luke’s! Where we were able to share the real story of Easter to over 35 non church going people of a variety of ages from a few weeks, pre-school, primary and secondary school age along with their families. This was a wonderful opportunity to share the Easter story in 2021, including the use of QR codes, hand sanitiser, social distancing, masks, and Large Placards with the story of Jesus and his resurrection, telling the story and reading the story with new people and being asked questions by young people! I had the great honour of talking about Jesus with three young lads who have heard of Jesus but did not know about the resurrection and why it happened. How could it happen? It is unbelievable! Why did he die like that! Over the space of 10 minutes, they went from “Just get me an Easter Egg! “ to as we walked around each of the Placards with the story, they listened a little more at each one, they began to read them and ask questions. Well, we will never know the impact of this Easter Trail but what a privilege to be one of the first people to share the story of Jesus! Feeding the Fire On a Monday, Wednesday, and Friday we have prayer groups where we share scripture, pray, and discuss what the word of God means to us right here in 2021. The time is spent reading God’s word, reflecting on it, and sharing what it means to us as an individual. Just wanting to be with God and knowing that he wants to be with us, making time for him. I have learned such a lot! One Monday a very dear friend shared a vision of Jesus that had come to him, where Jesus was at an almost burnt-out fire, and he began to gather the parts of the sticks that had not been touched by the fire and put them into the fire and of course when you add fuel to a fire it begins to burn again. Does it remind you of anything? Well, it reminded me of faith. We each will have had an encounter with Jesus, whether it was that you have known nothing else all your life if you were brought up in a Christian family or somewhere you have had a revelation. It caused me to think of what our faith is like? Is it a glowing ember nearly burnt out by life, changes, sorrow? bereavement? or is it burning brightly filled with the glow of Christ Jesus? What ever our Faith looks like if we do not feed it, it will burn out! So as Jesus himself encouraged us, let us feed that Fire! How? By making time to spend with Jesus, by getting to know God’s promises for you, his love for you, not just reading but studying his word. Reflecting and listening! Imagine how brightly the Christian Faith Fire would burn if every Christian around the world would feed that fire! 5

Thank You Church is a like a beautiful swan on a Sunday or at a church event such as a Christening, Wedding, or a Funeral. Thank you to all those who work so hard for our churches, unseen, forgotten, taken for granted, often criticized. All church wardens, all PCC members, administrators, magazine editors and deliverers, treasurers, accountants, cleaners, maintenance, flower providers, welcomers, volunteers, music providers, prayer groups, pastoral carers, friends who call each other, visit those who need assistance, lay readers, lay ministers, clergy, and their families. The first Sunday in May is Rogation Sunday. This is when many parishes still ‘beat the bounds’. Rogation means an asking of God - for blessing on the seed and land. The practice began with the Romans, who processed around the cornfields each Spring, singing and dancing, sacrificing animals, in order to get rid of evil. About 465 AD the Western world was suffering from earthquake and storm. Mamertius, Bishop of Vienne, aware of the pagan custom, ordered that prayers should be said in the ruined or neglected fields. Thus ‘beating the bounds’ became a Christian ceremonial. It arrived in England early in the eighth century. Each Spring, led by the priest, a little party from the parish would set out with a Cross to trace the boundaries of the parish. They’d implore God to keep their corn and roots and boughs in good health, and bring them to harvest. In the days when maps were scarce, ‘beating the bounds’ helped remind everyone just where the boundaries were. Do you know yours today? Walk the Way Mission which Maria will be taking part in in July 21. Luke 10 1-23 Jesus sends out the 72 - This a great story where the early disciples were sent out to share the good news, to heal, to pray. They were sent out with just what they stood in with no purse, food, etc. I am very excited to be taking part in another Mission with Through Faith Mission as we come out of Lockdown! Just as the 72 we will be walking out in Faith with no plans for food or accommodation. I will be taking part in week 3 of Walk The Way the first week in July and would greatly appreciate your support in prayer. Walk the Way is a major mission that TFM is planning for 2021. We plan to walk right across the UK from St David's in the West to Lowestoft in the East, starting at both ends and meeting in the middle. We will broadly follow the route of the 'Via Beata' footpath. The route will be split into 22 sections and teams of up to ten members will cover a section a week, a total of 11 weeks (11 from each end). Here comes the difference!! In recent years most of our missions have been carefully planned. In collaboration with local churches we have arranged accommodation and meals for team members and churches have prepared events and outreach opportunities. Walk The Way will be different. We recognise that many small rural churches are in crises, with crumbling buildings, few members and little money. We will be stepping out in faith that each day God will provide the accommodation that we need but not necessarily what we want! Tim Hall, TFM's CEO writes: “This is going to be tough, stretching and completely out of your comfort zone. Leave technology behind. Expect to finish the walk a transformed person. Is God calling you to join us?” 16

Annual Parochial Church Meetings The APCM for the Parish of Holy Trinity and St Barnabas will be held immediately after the 11am service on Sunday 9th May at St Barnabas Church The APCM for the Parish of St Luke, Morton will be held at 4pm on Monday 10th May at St Barnabas Church Anyone on the Electoral Roll of these churches may attend the appropriate meeting. If you are already on the Electoral Roll you do not need to do anything. If you need to add, amend or remove your name , please contact Alison Sayer ([email protected] or 01228 537122 (Callminder) for Holy Trinity and St Barnabas or Gemma McManus ([email protected] or 01228 538983 Parish Office) for St Luke’s. If you wish to hold any “position” at church, including sidesperson or welcomer, you must be on the Electoral Roll and to be a Deanery or Diocesan representa- tive of the relevant church, you must have been on the Electoral Roll for at least 6 months and worship (that means take Holy Communion) regularly (at least 3 times a year.) The Parish Electoral Roll is nothing to do with the City Council, it is basically just a list of members of the church, like a golf club or a bowling club! The number of people on the Electoral Roll determines how many representa- tives we can have on different Deanery and Diocesan committees and it also helps the PCC get in touch with you if necessary. There is a privacy notice relating to the Electoral Roll on achurchnearyou website. It explains why we can ask you for your address and how we keep your personal information safe. If you cannot attend the APCM , please consider praying for the meeting at the appropriate time. 18

Prayer for Pentecost Loving Father God, Thank you for sending your Holy Spirit; Your Spirit who knows no restrictions or barriers; Your Spirit who can reach us and be with us and in us, wherever we are, whatever our circumstances; Your Spirit who comforts and heals and empowers us to live with confidence that, ultimately, all shall be well; Your Spirit who connects us, through the life, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus. Because of Jesus’ victory over death we have hope and life forever. Thank you, loving Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen. By Daphne Kitching Ascension To complete Your seamless robe, and so to complete our faith, You ascended through the air into the heavens, before the very eyes of the apostles. In this way You showed that You are Lord of all, and are the fulfilment of all creation. Thus from that moment every human and every living creature should bow at Your name. And, in the eyes of faith, we can see that all creation proclaims Your greatness. A prayer of Bernard of Clairvaux (1090 – 1153). He was the main inspiration of the Cistercian Order of Monks. Men’s Breakfast restarts on the first Saturday of the month, starting again on Saturday 3rd July. Meet at the Royal Scot on Langrigg Road at 10am for a good breakfast and a good craic. On Saturday 2nd October, Dr Andrew Brittlebank (Consultant Psychiatrist & Associate Medical Director, Cumbria & Northumberland) will be leading a Men’s Health Breakfast. 20

13th May: Ascension Day, 40 Days with the Risen Christ 40 days after Easter comes Ascension Day. These are the 40 days during which the Risen Christ appeared again and again to His disciples, following His death and resurrection. (Matthew 28; Mark 16; Luke 24; and John 20.) The Gospels give us little of Christ’s teachings and deeds during those 40 days. Jesus was seen by numerous of His disciples: on the road to Emmaus, by the Sea of Galilee, in houses, etc. He strengthened and encouraged His disciples, and at last opened their eyes to all that the Scriptures had promised about the Messiah. Jesus also told them that as the Father had sent Him, He was now going to send them - to all corners of the earth, as His witnesses. Surely the most tender, moving ‘farewell’ in history took place on Ascension Day. Luke records the story with great poignancy: ‘When Jesus had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, He lifted up His hands - and blessed them.’ As Christmas began the story of Jesus’ life on earth, so Ascension Day completes it, with His return to His Father in heaven. Jesus’ last act on earth was to bless His disciples. He and they had a bond as close as could be: they had just lived through three tumultuous years of public ministry and miracles – persecution and death – and resurrection! Just as we part from our nearest and dearest by still looking at them with love and memories in our eyes, so exactly did Jesus: ‘While He was blessing them, He left them and was taken up into heaven.’ (Luke 24:50-1) He was not forsaking them, but merely going on ahead to a kingdom which would also be theirs one day: ‘I am ascending to my Father and to your Father, to my God and your God...’ (John 20:17) The disciples were surely the most favoured folk in history. Imagine being one of the last few people on earth to be face to face with Jesus, and to have Him look on you with love. No wonder then that Luke goes on: ‘they worshipped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.’ (Luke 24:52,53) No wonder they praised God! They knew they would see Jesus again one day! ‘I am going to prepare a place for you... I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.’ (John 14:2,3) In the meantime, Jesus had work for them to do: to take the Gospel to every nation on earth. 21

30th May: Trinity Sunday, celebrating our God who is Three Persons Trying to explain the doctrine of the Trinity has kept many a theologian busy down the centuries. One helpful picture is to imagine the sun shining in the sky. The sun itself – way out there in space, and unapproachable in its fiery majesty – is the Father. The light that flows from it, which gives us life and illuminates all our lives, is the Son. The heat that flows from it, and which gives us all the energy to move and grow, is the Holy Spirit. You cannot have the sun without its light and its heat. The light and the heat are from the sun, are of the sun, and yet are also distinct in themselves, with their own roles to play. The Bible makes clear that God is One God, who is disclosed in three persons: Father, Son (Jesus Christ) and Holy Spirit. For example: Deuteronomy 6:4: ‘Hear O Israel, The Lord our God, the Lord is one.’ Isaiah 45:22: ‘Turn to me and be saved… for I am God, and there is no other.’ Genesis 1:1-2: ‘In the beginning God created…. and the Spirit of God was hovering…’ Judges 14:6: ‘The Spirit of the Lord came upon him in power…’ John 1:1-3: ‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made.’ Luke 24:49 actually manages to squeeze the whole Trinity into one sentence. Jesus tells His disciples: ‘I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power (the Holy Spirit) from on high.’ In other words, the sun eternally gives off light and heat, and whenever we turn to its brilliant light, we find that the warmth and life there as well. w2e2

Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh Born 10th June 1921: Died 9th April 2021 We remember with great affection Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth II for over 73 years , her constant and loyal companion. Watching the coverage of his life on TV , I’m sure we were all astounded by everything he had done over his life spanning just two months short of a century. He was a skilled sailor and horseman, dec- orated for his service in the Navy in the Second World War, an early pio- neer of conservation and care for the environment, an innovator and a great believer in the practical skills needed for young people to get on in life. He will be remembered for instigating the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, but he was also an active supporter of so many other charities, the Armed Forces, the Commonwealth and his own family, one of whom said: “He was a man of kindness, humour and humanity.” His pared down funeral service was all the more poignant for it’s lack of fuss and fanfare; a true Christian funeral for a man of great faith. The four singers of the choir helped us all to concentrate on the words of the music the Duke had chosen himself. God of our lives, we give thanks for the life of Prince Philip, for the love he shared among us, and for his devotion to duty. We entrust him now to your love and mercy, through our Redeemer Jesus Christ. Amen. Merciful God, be close to all who mourn, especially The Queen and all members of the Royal Family. May they know the hope of your promises and the comfort of your love, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. We also remember the Queen who has just celebrated her 95th birthday on 21st April.
