Let’s set our Church on fire! “I think it would absolutely set the church on fire if every Christian would realise, they have what it takes to make a difference in the lives of others” Joyce Meyer I saw this statement the other day and I haven’t stopped thinking about it. It has been in the back of my mind at each of the summer holiday activity sessions so far. If the group of us that are here are making the difference to the lives of those in attendance, imagine how many more lives could be changed if we all got involved in outreach! I mean, how amazing is it that we, me and you, can make a difference in someone else’s life. I can hear some of you saying how difficult it can be to carry on offering help when it has been rejected, how sometimes explaining our love of Jesus to people who don’t yet know him can make us feel vulnerable, how we’ve been there and done that, how we’re now a little older and we’re tired. I get it, I’ve been there too, but let’s follow Jesus’s own direction. In Matthew 10, Jesus was sending out His disciples, and He told them that if they went to a town and the people didn’t accept them, they should shake the dust off their feet and go to the next town. Not everyone in need will want to accept our practical help. So, what does that mean for us? What can we do if our help is rejected? Well, we can get disheartened, upset, offended or we can continue to pray for them, but we are not obligated to try and change them or their circumstances if they do not want or aren’t ready to accept what help is offered. The world is a big place, and it can seem daunting, but let’s start with our communities. They are full of hungry, hurting people who would love to get any little bit of love and encouragement you have to give them. When one person rejects you, don’t let that stop you. Just do what Jesus did: Keep moving on until somebody wants what you’ve got. Continue to pursue your relationship with God more than anything else and ask Him to show you how you can help others and lift them up. If we can learn to follow God whether you’re accepted or rejected, you’re well on your way to fulfilling the call of God on your life to reach out to others. If we make it a habit to help people, encourage them, and treat them the way we want to be treated, then we will show God’s love in ways that really matter. The thing we all need to realise is sometimes it the smallest of acts, a smile, a listening ear, and some kind words which can truly make a difference- and we can all do that whatever our ages, however tired or rejected we are feeling, even if we have done it many times before- we should always be willing to try again. Each and every one of us can make difference in the lives of other- let’s do it, let’s set our church on fire! Gemma Gemma 4

Thank You , Bill 23rd July 1957—23rd June 2021 A tribute to Bill Heatley by Susan Thompson on behalf of TP4C Individually and collectively we can recall and recognise all the hard work and commitment over decades in this parish and deanery that has been undertaken by Bill Heatley. Motivated by his faith he worked tirelessly in so many different spheres—an example to us all—quietly getting on with the many different jobs in this busy parish. There was always a long list of needs and tasks and Bill was always there to “tick the boxes” and get things done. He had many practical skills and he was willing to give of his time and talents. As Christians we are reminded that our faith is part of our whole life and not just for Sundays. Our witness in our workplace can be difficult and challenging. Bill helped us by sharing his experiences. When he worked at Carr’s he talked about the questions posed by his workmates. These could be searching , but he persevered and got positive responses. Many of us identified with this problem and found it hard—our witness too had been questioned and we were encouraged by Bill as he became more confident as he went forward in faith—he was moving towards a decision to go forward for training as a Reader. He worked diligently and the course was demanding but he persisted, overcame the difficulties and it was a great day for the parish when he was licensed as a Reader. Work, witness and worship, Bill, you helped so many of us in so many different ways and for that we are truly grateful. The local lad who strengthened the life of our parish—We give thanks to God for your example. Thank you, Bill. 6
Rev Matt led the Service of Thanksgiving for Bill at St Barnabas Church on 1st July. Donations were split between Parkinson’s UK and St Barnabas Church. Matt would like to add his own thoughts about Bill: “ a great Reader, a man with a vision for the future of the church and support at Church and a great friend.” As a parish, we send our love and condolences to Kathryn, Emma and Kevin and the rest of Bill’s family. They must miss him a lot. Bill wrote this prayer for the Two Rivers Mission Community 7

The Parable of the Weeds (Matthew 13.24-30) Ever wonder why there is both good and evil allowed in this world? Jesus told a parable that touched on this subject – it is called the Parable of the Weeds. It runs like this: Consider the world as if it were a field where a Farmer has sown good seed. But then an enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat. So when the wheat came up, so did the weeds. What to do? Instead of destroying the weeds, and thereby risking the wheat, the Farmer tells his reapers to wait and let both wheat and weeds grow together until the harvest. At the harvest he will instruct the reapers to gather up the wheat, but to discard the weeds. So do not despair when evil seems to thrive in this world – there is a reckoning still to come, and justice will be done. kingdom enemy let Answers on heaven servants grow page 17 good master together seed sow harvest field gather bundles sleeping reap barn grain root burned weeds 12

Canon Paul Hardingham considers an urgent problem. Climate Sunday is this month Sunday 5th September is being designated Climate Sunday, ahead of the UN’s climate change conference, COP26, in Glasgow during November. How should we approach the challenge of climate change? We have damaged God’s creation: God delights in His creation: ‘God saw all that He had made, and it was very good.’ (Genesis 1:31). However, we have damaged this world and impacted people, created in His image. The burning of oil or gas and cutting down forests is increasing the concentration of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide that trap heat in the Earth’s atmosphere. The global average temperature could increase by 1.5˚C in 2030, resulting in significant damage to our planet. Already, increasing temperatures are melting ice caps, raising sea-levels, changing rainfall patterns and creating extreme climate events. It’s the 70% of the world’s poorest population who are being impacted most! Hope is found in Jesus: He has an intimate knowledge of the workings of crea- tion. ‘For in Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.’ (Colossians 1:16,17). Our hope for the future lies in what Jesus has done and continues to do in the world. He is the one who sustains cre- ation and will bring everything to completion. An invitation to respond: Simple everyday actions can help to sustain our planet, including recycling of waste, energy saving and changes in our lifestyle and diet to help the planet. We can fix our eyes on Jesus, as we pray for our world for our world leaders, gathering in Glasgow, asking that they may reach a good agree- ment for the future of our world. 16

This comes from a blog by Alistair Birkett, director of Rural Ministries for Scotland and Northern England. You can read more at: https://www.ruralministries.org.uk/blog/anticipatingtheharvest? Thanking God for our blessings Our winter barley ripened quickly this year, and soon the combine harvesters were rolling here on the Northumberland / Scottish Border. As the first trailer load of grain came into the shed, I ran my hands through the gold- en grains, offering a short prayer of thankfulness as I savoured the smell of fresh cut barley. It was a good harvest. I’ve often reflected on the Old Testament festival of the Firstfruits, where the Israelites offered the very first sheaf of the spring harvest to God (Leviticus 23:9- 14). I think this act required great faith, as they trusted God for a fruitful harvest to come, something that was far from certain, given their utter dependence on the weather. I’m not sure about you, but I’m always up for giving thanks after the event. I’ll sing ‘Come ye thankful people come’ and rejoice that “all is safely gathered in”, but am I able to trust with anticipation for what is yet to come? The festival of the Firstfruits reminded God’s people that everything they had came from Him. I am reminded that I must learn (and relearn) to trust in God, who has proven His faithfulness to me, over and over again. Perhaps right now as a church community or an individual you’re waiting for a certain event, standing on the cusp of a new initiative, praying for a certain outcome or anticipating a long-held vision becoming reality. Let’s all keep trusting that whatever the challenge, however things turn out, irrespective of what we anticipate, God is going before us and has secured the Firstfruits of an even greater harvest through Jesus, as He rose from the dead. Just as the grain offering to God in the Old Testament anticipated a harvest to come, Paul reminds us that Jesus’ victory anticipates an even greater bodily resurrection and eternal peace (1 Corinthians 15:20-22). As we continue our journey with Jesus through the challenges of each day, let’s do so with a deepening faith and trust. In the meantime, bring on the harvest - I’ll see you on the other side! 20

What do you want from tp4c? Have you told us what you think? Your chance to influence the future of TP4C Have you filled in the form to have your say about our churches? Thank you to those who have done so already. If you haven’t been able to pick one up from church, just send your ideas, thoughts, questions ,visions and dreams to Alan Sayer ([email protected]) or jot them on a piece of paper and hand it to him or leave it in the Parish Office Don’t just say “they” should do something about it, tell us ! We don’t have a time machine either, so it’s no good telling us what should have happened! However....we do want to hear from everybody whether you have only been to church once in your life and never want to come again or if you come to every- thing the church has to offer, young, old, in-between....you are the church and we need to know what you think the tp4c churches should be like. Alan Thanking God for the beauty of a late summer morning… Morning Prayer When morning in russet and saffron clad Is mantling the hills in a dew-soft plaid To the song of the moorland two-wings glad Let my heart upraise; When light creeps in through the chinks of the door When the mist ascends from the mountain floor, When the ocean shimmers like burnished ore, Let me give thee praise. O God of the morning, Christ of the hills,O Spirit who all the firmament fills, O Trinity blest who all goodness wills, Keep us all our days. From Prayers of the Western Highlanders 22
