Words from Gemma Jesus...on a Monday I am not perfect- there I’ve said it! I am not perfect however much I have tried in the past to be so. Here is where I am going to let you into an unkept secret- God knows I’m not perfect, he has known all along and he loves me regardless. I am trying my best to see myself the way God sees me and accept myself, flaws and all! It is easy to restrict our times with Jesus to a few hours on a Sunday and/or Wednesday morning- We can all make the excuses life is busy, life is messy and sometime life feels like it is hard work. I am not knocking traditional services- they are important to the rhythm of our faith but so are the Messy Church sessions, the Little Fishes toddler group sessions and our prayer groups along with all the other activities which come alongside the traditional services. The thing with truly believing in Jesus is that you cannot (and should not) pick up and put down your faith depending on what day of the week it is. You can’t check in to a Sunday service and not live a Jesus-filled life through the week. We should live out our faith on a Monday morning, a Thursday afternoon, a Saturday evening and all the times in between. Here is something I want to remind you of- God is with us wherever we are, whatever we are doing and whatever is happening in our lives- the good and the bad. We are all learning to live as the person Gods knows us to be. The mistakes we make along the way do not define who we are or change how God feels about us. God loves us, knows us, affirms us, protects us and we do our part in building our relationship with God by seeking him, serving him and enjoying his presence in all that we do. The line in the supermarket we are finding frustrating- a chance for us to thank God for the supermarket workers, the meeting we are struggling to find time for and maybe even wishing was not happening- a chance for us to appreciate the other people God has placed in our lives, the kids mess we are tidying for the third time in one day- the opportunity to thank God for the little monsters, blessings, I mean blessings. You get the picture- live your faith! 4
“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16) Seek God in among everyday things we do- look for ways to serve our communities whether it be through physical actions or prayer. It will change your perspective on things and will help your relationship with God grow. Make out some time to spend with in his presence. There are a few things our church leaders can support you with when you are growing your relationship with God– join in, reach out and ask how can I meet with Jesus today? Gemma IAN JOHNSTON FAREWELL TO REV As you will probably have heard by now, Rev Ian Johnston has decided to leave us at the end of February to explore new horizons. No more information is available at the moment, but Ian and Elaine will still be in contact with the Parish and will let us know eventually what they are doing and where. We wish Ian and Elaine well in their new venture. Never be weary of doing good You are never tired, O Lord, of doing us good; let us never be weary of doing You service. But as You have pleasure in the well-being of Your servants, let us take pleasure in the service of our Lord, and abound in Your work and in Your love and praise evermore. A prayer of John Wesley 5
The TP4C foodbank Eryn interviewing Haley Why is it important to help people? Jesus showed us how it is important to help others. He showed us how we should be kind and these are the reasons why we have the foodbank and why people donate too. How do people get food from the foodbank? People can get in touch with us by email ([email protected]) or by ringing the parish office (01228 538983). The food is given out on a Thursday morning between 10am and 11am and if people can’t make it they just need to let us know. Food collections happen from all 3 church sites- Holy Trinity, St Luke’s and St Barnabas. Do you have to believe in God to get help from the church? No- you don’t need to believe in God or the church we are here to help every- body. We care about everybody having enough food. Can you ask for help more than one time? Yes, you can get help as a one off or can collect a parcel weekly. People just need to let us know what help they need and we will do our best to help. What kind of food do we need donated? We have been very blessed with a large donation of pasta, rice, beans and soup in the past week. We always need donations of pasta sauces and tinned foods such as chicken curry, stewed steak and tinned ham. These are things people can add to the basics to make them more filling and nutritious. Another thing we also provide is toiletries- deodorants, toothpaste, shampoo, razors for men and women, these things that we use most days are always a welcome addition to the food bags. Donations can be made by getting in touch and we can arrange a time to meet and drop off at one of the churches or for it to be collected. Some people also donate money so we can buy items we may need more of when we need too. As you can see it is really important to support our foodbank so we can support people in our community. Everybody should have enough food to eat and Jesus showed us how to be kind and help others and we should be doing this where and when we can. Thank you Haley for talking to me about it. Eryn McManus. 6
Answers to Prayer You may have seen on our facebook the video of the answer to prayer for our foodbank! Not a little but a multitude. Although it was tiring and lots of aches and pains in moving it all , there was such joy and thanksgiving that Jesus answered our prayers. When you bless others then the Lord will bless you back a 100 times over. At Tea@4C we were able to celebrate the birth of new babies, awards that children have received and that our children are living and learning in a new way. That many hospital and GP appointments go ahead safely, that we can shop and get food in a new way. That we have each new day, that we have friends and family. How amazing is our God? I recently experienced an episode of vertigo! Most unpleasant and very debilitating. But the beauty out of the ashes as God promises! Our prayer groups on Monday, Wednesday and Friday prayed for me and My son and his fiancée came to cook for his sisters, my eldest daughter tidied up, my youngest daughter made me a cup of tea and did the dishes. I received emails, text messages, food, flowers, chocolates from friends and offers of lifts. Thank you Jesus and thank you to all those who messaged and have given me support, you know who you are and so does He. Maria Prayer for Families Dear Father God, In this month, when we especially think about mothers, we thank you for the families and friends you have given us. You know how hard it has been to have been separated over these past months, how much we have missed and longed for their hugs, their physical presence and fellowship. As we hold on to the hope of overcoming the pandemic, help us to be strengthened by the power of the love we receive - and to strengthen others by the love we give. May we know that, wherever we are, whatever our circumstances, we and our loved ones are held safe and connected by your unfailing love for us, revealed in Jesus – who is alive - and from whom nothing, no pandemic, no man-made turmoil, absolutely nothing and no-one can separate us, when we put our trust in Him. Thank you, Father, that we belong to your family. Thank you for the love and security we have in you. In Jesus’ name, Amen. By Daphne Kitching 7
14th March: Mothering Sunday & Mother Church The Fourth Sunday in Lent was called ‘Mid-Lent’ or ‘Refreshment Sunday’, when the rigors of Lent were relaxed more than was normal for a feast day. It is called Mothering Sunday as a reference to the Epistle reading for the Day (Galatians 4:21-31). The Lenten Epistles follow from each other with teaching about our life as Christians and how we are to follow Christ. On Mid-Lent Sunday the Epistle talks of bondage and freedom; the bondage of the Law and the Old Covenant as compared to the freedom in Christ, \"the promised one\", and the New Covenant. Verse 26 reads \"But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.\" We gain our freedom from Christ and, as it was seen before the Reformation, the Church. Thus, Mothering Sunday is about the freedom that we gain through the promise of Jesus Christ delivered through our Mother the Church. People were encouraged to go to their ‘Mother Church’ (their home church or their home Cathedral) to worship and give thanks. Hence apprentices, and others, went home for the weekend and often brought gifts (or accumulated pay) home to their family. On the other hand, Mother's Day is a secular festival invented in 1904 and is celebrated on the 2nd Sunday in May in most countries in the world. The UK seems to be the exception. In recent years Mothering Sunday has been hijacked to take the place of a special, secular day to give thanks for our mothers. Life is full of ups and downs: after blessings, hard times often follow. They are not meant to destroy us but to help us grow spiritually by deepening our faith and dependence on God. The Holy Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil – to give Him the opportunity to stand fast against the enemy. The devil’s temptations were based on half-truths, which Jesus rejected by standing firm on the whole truth of Scripture. The truth sets us free! ST BARNABAS WITH HOLY TRINITY MOTHERS UNION Well , hello everyone! Another month has gone by, the month in which we would normally meet for our Annual General Meeting, to elect or re- elect officers. In the absence of this, Alma has prepared the accounts and forwarded them to the Deanery. (Thanks Alma). With the help of Nancy all subscriptions have been paid for 21 members and because of this I have been able to send the required Branch Report to our Deanery Leader. Thank you everyone for getting subs to us so quickly. I know that everybody isn’t able to receive information online but I will try to put a newsletter together to keep everybody in the picture. Lady Day is on Thursday 25th March and will be “live streamed” from St Michael’s Workington! I believe there is to be a printed service available so if possible I will try to get copies. Hopefully restrictions will be eased in the near future, until then, Go well and safely and may the Lord be ever with you. Tea@4C Covid has knocked everything out of sync! Our church services, our congregations, our giving and our future as church. It all seems impossible doesn’t it? Well , you see when Jesus is at the centre of it all, he will always make a way! It might not be the way it has been done in the past but with God’s son at the centre, God will make a way. I had the great privilege of taking part in Tea@4C on the 12th February 2021.What is that you may ask? Well on the second Saturday of each month, a team of us hosted Tea@HT for the last eight years ( 6 for me). There has always been chaos, organising crafts, service sheets, prayers, food, will there be enough and will anyone come? And every time people always came, from tiny babies to the very gracefully aged! There was always noise, sometimes tensions but always love and always Jesus! So how could it ever be the same if we can’t see each other and we cannot eat together? We have been frozen! Let’s just have a go! And that is what we did. A slight change of name to indicate change (The Parish of 4 Communities or TP4C as we are known) a wonderful zoom video shared with our church families and Jesus right in the middle of it! Our families experienced something familiar, the craft, the bible story, the beautiful prayers for church families, the love of Jesus but delivered in a very different way. Things may be changing, we may get frozen but when Jesus is at the centre of it, God will make a way! Give me a sense of humour, Lord, Give me the grace to see a joke, To get some humour out of life, And pass it on to other folk Bishop A little girl told her mother, “We went to a confirmation service at the cathedral and I saw the bishop. Now I know what a crook looks like!” Bend I got a package envelope in the mail the other day that had written on the front, ‘Photographs: Do Not Bend’. Underneath the postman had written: \"Oh yes they do.” 18

Prayer for strength Dear Father in heaven, Thank you for the example Jesus gave us when He was in the wilderness – the desert where He was tempted by the enemy of all that is good. Lord when we are tempted to give in to temptation, whatever form it may take, help us to remember that Jesus was tempted too, in the same ways that we are. But He looked to you for help and strength; He looked to your word and trust- worthiness. Help us to know your help and strength too. Help us to resist temptations by trusting you through Jesus. Help us to be good examples to others who may be struggling with life issues and to lead them also to you. Lord, please help us, as only you can. We ask in Jesus name, Amen. By Daphne Kitching 20
Sermon Series For Lent 2021 At TP4C we will be undertaking a sermon series during Lent. This will be a chance for us to look at 3 areas of Christian living and it will be chance for us to think, reflect and pray about these areas in our personal lives as well as our public and church lives. These 3 areas are: Discipleship Church Mission At TP4C we feel that these are 3 very key and important areas of Christian life and this is why we have chosen to spend 2 weeks on each of these subjects during Lent. God in the Sciences This series is written by Dr Ruth M Bancewicz, who is Church Engagement Director at The Faraday Institute for Science and Religion in Cambridge. Ruth writes on the positive relationship between Science and Christian faith. What will March bring? Mental health ideas for uncertain times We may all have rather mixed feelings on reaching March this year. On the one hand, it is lovely to see the onset of Spring, and vaccinations and better weather may make handling the pandemic a little easier. On the other hand, marking a year from the start of the first UK lockdown will be painful for some, especially as many of us are likely to be experiencing restrictions or ongoing hardships for quite some time. We may need to find new ways to keep going, so here are some suggestions that draw on both science and Christian theology. Getting outside Time outdoors in a natural environment is very good for you – and you can’t argue with the happy hormones produced by exercise. Attending to the details of nature can also inspire awe, which has been linked to positive mood, and increased life satisfaction. Enjoying creation can also help us connect with God. Looking outside If you are truly stuck indoors, try putting bird feeders outside your window so creation comes to you. This is also an act of kindness (see below)! Lament and praise The Psalms are a rich resource to help us express both our grief and our thanks to God. Try reading one or two each day. Journaling Keep a journal of thoughts, experiences or practices you have engaged with during the day. Constructing a personal narrative or story is now recognised as a very powerful psychological and spiritual tool for building resilience. It is also a vital learning tool that we can go back to when tough times return in the future. Acts of kindness Helping or encouraging someone else is obviously a good thing to do in itself, but it also has a very positive effect on the giver - spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and even phys- ically. Whichever way you look at it, finding new ways to show kindness to others can be a very effective way to help ourselves feel better too. Gratitude Gratitude is another natural drug – in a sense – that can help us feel better. Try keeping a grateful diary, adding a few things each day. Laugh, sing, make music, dance All of these activities are deeply rooted in our physical and mental makeup You may have forgotten how great they feel, especially in times of sadness, but we can learn from children who do them very naturally. I hope these ideas may help bring us closer to God, each other, and His creation. 23
