Foreword The operation of the Delhi Metro is into its 18th year now. Almost two decades after the operationalisation of the first Metro in India, i.e, Kolkata Metro, the Delhi Metro started its journey on the 25th of December, 2002 when the first ever section (Shahdara - Tis Hazari) was inaugurated. Since then, the Delhi Metro has emerged as one of the fastest growing Metro networks in the world. Today, over 350 train sets operate more than 5,000 trips a day for more than 18 hours covering a network of 389 kilometres (including the NOIDA – Greater NOIDA corridor) and 285 stations. While management of such a massive scale of operation requires meticulous planning and precision, the maintenance of the assets is also another important dimension of the entire exercise. Based on commuter feedback and the shortcomings observed, a host of initiatives have been taken in recent times to ensure the timely refurbishment of our infrastructure. For example, though the rolling stock available with us generally has a life of 30 years, they have to undergo midlife refurbishment at about 15 years or so. This exercise has been taken up in DMRC and all aspects of the train sets are being minutely looked into. Similarly, DMRC has taken up renovation of its oldest corridor, i.e, the Red Line. DMRC has also controlled other system failures by finding low cost solutions. Other operational Metros like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kochi etc have also been running Metro services for many years. These Metros have also solved maintenance issues through innovation. It is very important to periodically document these initiatives so that these compilations remain as manuals for the future Metro systems to follow. In this book, we have put together the initiatives taken by the Metros all over the country. I am sure this e-publication would be of great benefit to the Operations and Maintenance wing of Metro systems in the days to come. I would like to thank our respected Secretary, MoHUA, Sh. D S Mishra for coming up with this great idea of compiling this publication. A word of gratitude must also go to our Managing Director, Dr. Mangu Singh for guiding us in taking these initiatives forward. I would like to thank the other operational Metros who have provided inputs for this publication in very short time. A K Garg Director, Operations DMRC 4

Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL)
Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) Department Modified: Provision of movable stinger supply in Repair Bay was not feasible due to Overhead Cranes. Hence 4 Rolling stock nos of 750 V DC stationery stingers installed for each bay for energizing of Trains. This increased effective Title of Initiative : Passenger Information Board utilization of Repair Bay in terms of Maintenance and Repair Testing purpose. Testing & Commissioning of 50 Trains completed in RBL to maximum extent. BMRCL is having 50 rakes of 3 cars and same are running since 2011. The Public Announcement and Passenger Benefits/advantages of the initiative: Information System is supplied by M/s TOA, Japan. • 3RS-DM units commissioning improved after Passenger Information Board (PIB) is used to display the video information and 900 Nos are there in 150 Cars. providing stationary stinger units in RBL-1&4. Recently 75 Nos of PIBs failed. On investigation, it is found that power supply module PCB failed, in which a • Optimum utilization of RBL. special DC-DC Converter failed. M/s TOA informed that the PIB is obsolete and spare parts are not available. • Testing and commissioning of 6 Car Train completed at Also, in Indian market same DC-DC converter not faster rate. available readily and it may take 6 to 8 months to procure. The cost of PIB is around 2 Lakhs. • Train Functional check can be carried out at repair Bay. In-house Team came-up with replacement of DC-DC Converter, by a simple SMPS unit. The cost of repair was ` 5,500/-. By using same method 75 Nos of PIBs were repaired. The Cost of repairs is with respect to new spare cost of PIB is 2.75%. Benefits/advantages of the initiative: • Nos of PIBs are claimed back with less cost. • Further method is established for such repairs. Laying of Stinger cable Passenger Information Board SMPS Title of Initiative : Providing stationery 750V Stinger supply in 2 Bays of Repair Bay Existing: Depot is having 3 Inspection Lines & 4 Repair Lines. All the repair Bay lines were not having 750V provision & as such maintenance and testing of Trains were not possible. Hence, no power availability in Repair bay lines and constraints of inspection lines was major constraint for day to day maintenance and Testing commissioning of 50 Nos of 6 Car Trains.
