But this beautiful addition to Minichamps’ Mullin Collection series, a supercharged Type 57C with a unique coach built body, has never been modeled before. e seventh-from-last Type 57 built, chassis 57835 was sold to a Mssr. Chaussivet, who had French coachworks Van Vooren create a unique coupe body. While its lines are very similar to the factory Atalante, the hood louvers and side trim are different, as are the taillights and turn signal lights on the C-pillars. Photos confirm that Minichamps’ resincast beauty has every detail of this one-off body correct. Its medium- green paint is smooth and glossy; we think the hood hinge should also be chromed, and the stone guards are printed silver, but every other piece of trim is perfectly reproduced with either bright plated or photo-etched details. e interior has accurate upholstery patterns with separate plated handles and cranks, painted wood door sills, and a very realistic wood-grain dash decal with detailed instruments. is is a very accurate and beautifully made model of a gorgeous car, and it carries the “Mullin Automotive Collection” forward in style. . M2 is on to something with its line of car best. at was certainly the case when Citroën decided to build haulers, and this pair takes the love even deeper, with a special “Mopar 75 Years” theme. Both a four-wheel-drive version of their rugged, if poky, 2CV (Deux trucks are 1957 Dodge COEs with deep detailing on their cabs and chassis; we really dig the Chevaux) sedan. Designs that tied the rear wheels to the front- crunchy and correct wheels and tires on the tractors and the trailers they’re towing. Set against a Populuxe backdrop, the fantastical rides dreamed up by the designers at GM, Ford, and Chrysler (with the occasional independent maker along for the ride) swooped, finned, and occasionally flew their way across the car show stages. Even their names — Futura, Predicta, LeSabre, Mystere — seemed to evoke all the romance of the stars. 24 DCXmag.com

M2 MACHINES 1970 Ford Mustang “Gambler 514” “FOOSE DESIGN” RELEASE 1 Episode 12 of Overhaulin’ season two was shot in the shadow of the Las Vegas SEMA show, and the story told to Barry, the owner of a 1:64 | $5.99 EACH 1970 Mustang, was that his son Brent had lost the car to a gambling debt. e episode gave the Foose crew a chance to channel their inner Chip Foose’s show, Overhaulin’, is classic TV bookies while the car was being rebuilt with a 625-hp 514 stroker, entertainment geared towards car lovers. shaved door handles, a truly special set of Foose wheels, and a British Equal parts Candid Camera, is is Your Life, Racing Green/Rust Pearl paint job. Release 1 was shipped in late January 2013, and we’ve been dying to share them with you. 1956 Ford F-100 “Foose Overlord” Chip’s dad, Sam Foose, has been an enduring presence in the designer’s life, and this 1956 Ford pickup truck was always a part of the picture. When Overhaulin’ started getting traction in the ratings, Chip’s crew did to him what they would do to so many others — they “stole” the truck, using Sam as an insider. e finished hauler was presented to Chip at the 2005 SEMA show, in one of the most emotional reveals of the series. M2 has done some great work here; not only have they nailed the truck’s shape, they’ve applied a slick black paint job and decorated the slammed ride with hair-thin striping. is version rolls on gray 5-spoke wheels that approximate the truck’s special rims; a chase version has the same units done in chrome. In addition to full lensing in the grille, the model has a full interior, and a nicely detailed rendering of the Ford crate engine, complete to the oval air cleaner. 28 DCXmag.com

1932 Ford Roadster “Foose P-32” One of Chip’s more inspired designs, the P-32, was an homage to returning airmen. e Brookville-bodied roadster is powered by an Edelbrock/Stromberg-topped vintage Lincoln V12. e car’s hand-formed body has a “spinner” nose and nacelle-style grille, as well as a raked, canopy-style Plexiglas windscreen. e interior is painted in olive drab, and the car’s body bears all the hammer marks, weld seams, and scars of its build with pride. Yellow wheels, a blue chassis, and straight pipes exiting the hood all recall classic fighter plane styling, and they’re all here on the M2 replica. e detailing is clean and accurate, from the tampos applied to the model’s body to the Lincoln steering wheel and dash. e nose and hood — correctly of a different luster from the body — nail the intake-style face of the car perfectly. is all-new casting is extremely fly. 1968 Firebird “Uncle Sam’s Nephew” David is an ex-Marine whose hideous yellow ’68 Firebird mysteriously disappeared during Overhaulin’ season three. Of course, the three-time Iraq vet was kept completely in the dark as the Foose team had their way with his car. A stout crate motor, custom seats, a mega-watt sound system, and a trick paint job featuring rear fender “billboards” made the reveal special. Again, M2 has done their homework, and the 1:64 has the look, stance, and style of the real ride, including, incredibly, the custom seats - a nice touch. e plus-size 5-spoke Foose wheels look just right, as do the blue-trimmed silver billboards on the car’s flanks, and the tampo’d-on “Firebird” emblems up front. e crate engine doesn’t have the black valve covers and air cleaner that the TV car has, but given what this model does do right, that’s not a deal breaker at all. M2 HAS DONE THEIR HOMEWORK, AND THE 1:64 HAS THE LOOK, STANCE, AND STYLE OF THE REAL RIDE SUMMER 2013 29

OUT OF THE BOX 1967 Chevrolet “Cherry Nova” e Overhaulin’ crew chose a sales clerk named Kathy — and her 1967 Nova — as their marks for this build. Mildly slammed and given a small-block Chevy crate motor — replete with a hand-formed polished “cherry” for the air cleaner nut — the car was one of the highlights of the series’ second season. Box Novas have always been a favorite of ours, and the M2 casting has all the right looks, and a coat of white over silver, with a cherry red slash separating the two. Big Foose wheels fill the holes at the corners, and the white interior, two-toned dash, spot-on grille and headlights, and small block motor — done in the same paint scheme as the TV car — complete the scene. Cherry, indeed. MORE FOOSE RELEASES ARE PLANNED, AND THESE ALL NEW CASTINGS ARE ONLY THE BEGINNING OF WHAT WE CAN ONLY HOPE WILL BE A LONG PARTNERSHIP. 1969 Chevrolet “Foose ‘69 Camaro” At one time, Foose Design had licensed Texas company, Unique Performance, to be the builder of note for Chip’s smoothed and refined “’69 Camaro,” at an eye-watering $125,000 per. at partnership was cut off, but M2’s model replicates the design with a beautiful metal-flake yellow body accented by anthracite panels on the trunk and on the special scooped hood, custom grillework, huge Foose wheels, a two-toned interior with a roll cage, and a crate Chevy wearing yellow valve covers. Out back, the lensed taillights have delicate chrome detailing set above a faired-in bumper and twin tailpipes. is is Foose — and M2 — at their best. It goes without saying that more Foose releases are planned, and these all-new castings are only the beginning of what we can only hope will be a long partnership. Will the pairing of Foose and M2 result in some straight-to-diecast designs? We can only hope. On the day we visited, the showroom housed three Ferrari Dino 246GTSs, four Corvettes (a 1957, '58, '59, and 1960), a Mercedes 190SL, a '63 Jaguar E-Type roadster, an Austin Healey 3000, an Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Speciale, and a 1959 MGA twin-cam, among others, all in a perfect state of restoration. That’s ironic, given Carini’s penchant and passion for finding and enjoying the unrestored automobiles that make up the bulk of his private collection. A scant handful of years ago, that dogged ability to locate forgotten cars led to an article about Wayne in a national newspaper. A few days after the piece ran, Wayne got a call from a producer interested in meeting to discuss a new reality show — starring Wayne. A series of happy accidents and almost- too-good-to-be-true coincidences played out in Wayne’s favor over the coming weeks, and the rest is television history. After the cameras were put away, the conversation turned to Wayne’s newfound fame, and what it’s meant to his life, his family, and his work with Autism research summer 2013 35

Close, but no Zigarre “Projects 12-32” sounds like an Ed Wood film festival, but it’s the numbers that Ferdinand Porsche used to denote the series of designs that lead to the Volkswagen. “Project 12” was developed with Zundapp, and it had much of the right layout, but used a bizarre 5-cylinder radial engine. Barn Find Tom Norpell’s amazing rustic diorama by joe kelly JR. Fishermen tell of landing “the big one” and golfers wax poetic about the photos by perfect drive right into the cup. Last issue, we showed you the art of miniaturist Tom Norpell, who shared his techniques on how to create a hyper-realistic scale car cover. This time around, Tom is sharing some of the building tricks he used to create the ultimate setting for those covered cars — a complete old barn, in 1:18 scale. 40 DXCMag.com

Coming sometime this year, Indy 500 all-time lap leader and four-time Andretti was co-named “Driver of the Century” (20th) by the Associated winner Al Unser’s winning “Johnny Lightning” Colts are naturals. He brought all four of his wins to the Penske organization. His cars were striking, particularly with their Pennzoil or Marlboro liveries. 9. Dario Franchitti Chip Ganassi Racing 2007 & 2012 Dallaras GREENLIGHT Franchitti has won the Indy 500 three times, in 2007, 2010, and 2012, and seems poised to jump into the fraternity of four-time winners. He and his wife, actress Ashley Judd, are big fan favorites and draw lots of attention on race day. SUMMER 2013 49

Jim Clark 1965 Ford/Lotus 38 CAROUSEL 1 Considered by many to be history’s best driver, two-time F1 World Champion Jim Clark won the Indy 500 in 1965, on his third attempt, becoming the first man to win the race in a rear-engined race car. at signaled the beginning of the end for the classic Indy roadster. Mark Donohue 1972 Sunoco/Penske McLaren M16B CAROUSEL 1 Mark Donohue was an amazing driver in Can Am, Trans Am, sports car, endurance, and open wheel IndyCar racing. His engineer’s thoroughness assured that the cars he raced had an “unfair advantage.” His win at the 1972 Indy 500 was the first of 15 500s won by the Penske Racing team. 11. Johnny Rutherford 1974 McLaren M 16 C/D CAROUSEL 1 “Lone Star JR” won three times at the Brickyard. is car was his first winner in 1974, driving for McLaren with Offy power. He also won in 1976 and 1980. 12. Sam Hanks/Jimmy Bryan 1957- 1958 Salih Laydown 16.
