hot wheels highway by mike zarnock Exclusive Releases Look Twice, It’s Alright Mattel and the retailers continued to bring collectors exclusive Hot Wheels during 2013 to keep their appetites for variations satisfied with many tantalizing models to chase after — some of which were easy to spot, and others, well ... not so much. Walmart changed it up a bit this time, keeping it fresh (and making it easy) Kmart '34 Ford by keeping it bare: there was a whole series of unpainted ZAMAC cars (the name of the alloy the cars are cast in), rather than all the different colors, windshield banners, and wheel combinations they’d offered in previous years. Every other case code or so, three new ZAMAC cars were mixed in with the mainline releases for a total of 18 special vehicles. The packages had the corresponding mainline collector number, and also have the ZAMAC series number, which makes it easy to tell if you’ve collected them all. 2013 Walmart Exclusive ZAMAC Series 158 Nissan Skyline GT-R (R34) ZAMAC 006 HW Showroom 159 Datsun 240Z 2013 ZAMAC 014 HW Showroom 160 Volkswagen Scirocco GT24 ZAMAC 012 HW Showroom 161 Custom ‘69 Chevy Pickup ZAMAC 007 HW Showroom Kmart '49 Mercury 174 Ferrari F12 Berlinetta ZAMAC 013 HW Showroom 180 Lamborghini Aventador J ZAMAC 017 HW Showroom 183 Purple Passion ZAMAC 015 HW Showroom 192 ‘12 Camaro ZL1 ZAMAC 009 HW Showroom 204 ‘64 Corvette Sting Ray ZAMAC 008 HW Showroom 211 Custom ‘56 Ford F-100 ZAMAC 016 HW Showroom 219 Classic Nomad ZAMAC 002 HW Showroom 226 ‘10 Camaro SS ZAMAC 004 HW Showroom 231 ‘66 Chevy Nova ZAMAC 005 HW Showroom Kmart had its three “Kmart Hot Wheels Day” events throughout the year, and continued its tradition of limited colors to go along with the events. 234 ‘71 HEMI Cuda ZAMAC 003 HW Showroom If you’ve had the chance to participate, you know what fun they can be. Now, that mold set is under the good graces of the One of the magazines that was singing the Chrys- Auto World folks, who have released this version as part ler’s praises that year was Popular Mechanics, which of an “American Muscle” series featuring magazine cover included the 300C as part of their February 1957 annual cars — in this case, the aforementioned February 1957 new car review. The Chrysler was pictured on the cover, Popular Mechanics, the cover of which is reproduced on and within the pages, the decidedly full-sized car topped the window box’s art — and it carries the same menu of the “Special-Sports-Type, Personal Cars” section, along features as the Ertl WPCC release, done here minus the with the Corvette, Studebaker Golden Hawk, and the Ford first car’s fancy electroplated chrome, and one or two Thunderbird — all of which made roughly 100 horsepower texture and paint tricks. The casting is great, of course, less than the 300C’s 375. and it’s painted here in a nice metallic gunmetal gray. The A few years ago, Ertl’s “Walter P. Chrysler Collection” chrome may not be the expensive stuff, but it more than model of that car had scaleheads all aflutter, as the first does the job on the big model’s ends, and all the side and of what was purported to be a full series of high-detail, window trim in between. One of the actual improvements lavishly finished, ready-to-display diecast models — a la on the newer car is correctly deco’d wheel covers, which Ertl’s “Precision 100” selection, under Ford. It was a giant, are wrong on the original release. Another good call is the body-color radiator brace under the real-hinged hood — correct at last, and it fronts one of the still-best scale engines in the hobby. The level of finish on the 392 Hemi’s block, crazy twin air cleaners and environs, done with wonderful castings, meticulous paint, and quality mark- ings, actually surpasses the original Chrysler Collection offering. Not so much the trunk, which goes uncarpeted, but does have “weather stripping.” Inside, the bench seats, door panels, and dash are all just as we remember, with a beige and black color scheme — and yes, the wee dangling photo-etched key in the ignition. The chassis detail is actually improved, too — the body is painted in the correct color, not black — and all of the other pieces, including an exhaust that’s been done in multiple grades of metallic, are just as well-decorated and put together as anyone might hope for in a model tagged at this still-bargain price. And, Jim Bur is an industry insider — of course, he’s holding a Viper. and loves to collect, anyway Keep smiling, Jim! JBy DCX Staff im Bur’s Facebook page contains a photo of him as a little kid — maybe two years old — “helping” his dad work on the family car. It’s a summer day, and the car is a ‘65 Mustang. Those who know Jim these days know him for another brand — Chrysler — and not for fixing cars (though he’s quite a capable mechanic). Grown-up Jim has an edge-of-the-seat job as a licensing expert who has been working with some of the largest names in the auto and hobby industries for the better part of the past 20 years. If you have a model Mopar on your shelf, chances are good that Jim helped get it there. Most recently, Jim’s been hammering away with Trademarketing Resources, Inc., a Detroit-based company that specializes in making sure that clients like Chrysler, Jeep, and Citgo get their products protected and their brand names represented correctly on products that bear their logos, names, or designs. On Jim’s end, that has always included getting the details right when it came to making replicas of licensor’s cars — a perfect fit for this car guy/collector that loves his work — and has (surprise) assembled a substantial collection of scale machinery in his Michigan home. Given Jim’s history with the five-pointed star, you’d expect things to be weighted toward the Mopar side of the collecting spectrum ... and you’d be right. “I’m really a fan of all kinds of cars — not just Chrysler products — but when it comes to Vipers, well, that’s a different story.” Like a lot of collectors, Jim’s gotten resourceful about how to display his pride and joys, and his collection is ensconced in a mixture of store- bought display cases and hand-cobbled shelving, all placed in his man cave/home bar where guests of both genders can enjoy them. The scales vary; Jim’s got a great selection of large scale cars, a smattering of car art and wall hangings, a slew of 1:64, and more than a handful of 1:18 and 1:24. The good news is that there’s always room for more. But a few pieces — some safely tucked away where little fingers can’t reach them — mean more to Jim than the others. “Some of these (models) are really rare — prototypes, one-offs, that kind of thing,” says Jim, “and I can’t imagine what they’re worth. But they’re not — I repeat, not — for sale,” he laughs. Taken from a man who knows all too well the dollars-and-cents end of the scale collectibles hobby, those are just the words we like to hear.
