VSoalkmswbagaEn From the factory, Sunscreen not included Maisto’s radio-control BY SCOTT BAILEY toy Samba is tricked out Growing up a car nut as a big-wheeled custom— in Southern California, my favorite far from weathered survivor vehicle was the beach-going VW look I wanted to recreate. Samba van of the 1960s. If you ask me, there’s arguably no cooler a car made. As a radio-control enthusiast, I just had to have an RC version of my own. Maisto makes a 1:10 scale model that’s well proportioned, but it’s modern “dub” styling was far from the look I was going for. I wanted my Samba to have as much detail as I could think of and fully capture the essence of those vans I saw in my youth. It had to look real, have rust and dents, and look used and lived in. I wanted it to be the most unique vehicle I’ve ever built, and I wasn’t afraid to try anything to achieve it. is is my journey through the most epic build of my life! BODY MODS e Maisto VW Samba body is an almost perfect starting point. I say almost because half the windows are just molded black plastic. But the body as a whole is an awesome recreation of the original so it made a great jump-off point for the project. Unfortunately, it was nowhere near as worn, rusted, and junky as I needed it to be, so I had to create a plan of attack. First, I pulled the body off the chassis and disassembled all the parts down to the shell. I removed all the fake black plastic windows, and figured the best way to do this was to drill and cut them out with a Dremel. After a lot of noise and cutting, I had a ready-to-work-on shell. I then filed and smoothed all the window openings, and added dents and rust holes. I used a Dremel sanding wheel on the inside of the body to make it thinner, and then poked holes in it with a sewing pin. Dents were done by heating and pressing the plastic body. is was by far the most labor-intensive part of the build, cutting and filing all the window openings was quite tough! I “rusted” the body, using a three-step painting process that utilized Rust primer, gray primer, the color coat, water, and common kitchen salt. is technique has been used by modelers for years, and I thought this 62 DCXmag.com
Dawn patrol on the beach, in sunny Santa Cruz, CA. This Samba looks as real as it gets. Louvered windows and rusted screens add another personal touch of scale realism. Safari windows for the front, just like the real thing. Interior There were five must-haves I wanted to construct for the interior: flooring, dashboard, seat, sink/stove, and a bed. Everything was hand-created by cutting styrene, sanding, shaping and washing with diluted black paint, and finished with ground pastels as dirt. The flooring is from a placemat and the bed is made of cardboard, foam and fabric. Referring to 1:1 photos of various VWs, I got creative and started building what I would want if I could crawl inside and live there. I experimented with various painting techniques, and of course, more stickers! would be the best way to achieve the look I was going for. Basically, the process goes like this: paint rust primer, mist with water, apply salt, let dry. Paint gray primer, mist with water, apply salt, let dry. Paint top coat color, mist with water, and apply salt, let dry. The great thing about this is you really can’t mess it up. Once all coats are dry, then you simply scrub the body under hot water to remove the painted salt, leaving a realistic simulation of rust. The end result is fantastic! adding the details No camper van is complete without a sink, stove, bed and lots of stickers. This is the stage where I decided to just start building stuff out of styrene and making the VW Samba I pictured in my head. Each part became a little project of its own. The longest one was cutting up scraps of Lexan to create all the windows. I remember old VWs having the homemade oil coolers attached to the side, bumper stickers, louvered windows, funky old exhausts hanging out the bottom rear of the vans. There were also surfboards and racks, yellow dim lights, and opening front Safari windows so I just started building all of them out of styrene. If they weren’t perfect, I didn’t care, nor did the owner of this particular van. At this point, I was the 1:10 scale owner, and I wanted my van to be just the way I wanted, rusty and funky. LEDs just wouldn’t look the part so I ran 12V incandescent bulbs off a 6V battery pack to generate a low-wattage glow appropriate to the model.. All of this work was a pretty big gamble, but I think it paid off big time in the end! Looking rusty!
