One of those companies was the Mebetoys brand in Oleggio Castello, Novara, Italy. Mebetoys had been manufacturing die cast toys since 1959, mak- ing things like cap pistols and even a Yogi and Boo-Boo Bear diecast car. In 1967, they started manufacturing their own brand of highly detailed 1:43 and 1:28 scale European-oriented diecast cars with opening doors, detailed engines, chrome wheels and rubber tires. Mattel bought Mebetoys in 1969, and it didn’t take them long to start changing things to “how we do it in the USA”. One of the first changes ostensibly for “child safety” was to replace the removable rubber tires that Mebetoy models with hard plastic non-removable wheels and tires. It wasn’t much longer until the larger scale Hot Wheels line of “Grand Toros” found their way into the Mebetoys lineup too bringing with it more of the American automotive styles to capture more interest among US buyers. With castings like Bill Cushenberry’s “Silhouette,” Tom Daniel’s “T’rantula,” GM’s “Astro II,” Ira Gilford’s “Twin Mill,” Ford’s “MKII” and a bunch more American designs, Mebetoys effectively became an Italian Mattel. And the 1:43 scale Mebetoy castings did well until they were discontinued in 1983. Having a distribution outlet in Europe not only allowed Mattel to integrate its larger scale diecast vehicles into the Mebe line, but they also included the Hot Wheels Flying Colors series which Mattel had released the in the US starting with Redlines in 1974 and ending with Blackwalls in 1978. My records show that Mattel released them in Italy through Mebe- toys starting in 1976 as Product item number 1-09456. One of the more unique features of the Mebetoys Flying Colors series is that they were packaged in boxes like the early Matchbox cars—just one more reason they are highly sought after by collectors! As with many of the earlier Hot Wheels cars, the Mebetoy Hot Wheels are somewhat hard to come by and demand quite a price. The most complete collection I have come across belongs to my friend Dee Klinken- berg from Holland and he has been very gracious in allowing me to use photos from his collection for this article.
