Several webinars and practice mocks were held to familiarise students with the new arrangements. The 9,900 mock exams were timed to usual examination conditions, with a start time, end time and an extra 15 minutes for uploading 6,600 answer scripts. The teachers marked the scripts mostly online, and discussions on papers were also conducted online and marks 3,300 were delivered. This event, which witnessed the participation of several leading state, private, and international schools in the country, was an exciting novelty as it was a competition of dramatic performances delivered on the popular digital platform of Zoom. The Gateway College Colombo Team secured the Festival Championship with an average overall score of 77.67%, while Gateway College Dehiwala and Gateway College Kandy followed closely behind with their own accomplishments. Non-academic Shelinda Jansen*, Sadeepa Henderson, Filzah Farouk, Dahamya Liyanage Asian Athletics Rankings 2020 Gateway College Colombo Under 20 Girls Relay Team Overall 9th – 4x100m and 11th – 4x400m * Fastest female athlete in Asia in her age group and the 9th in the world Gateway College Colombo's Under 20 Girls Relay Team ranked overall 9th. for the 4x100m and 11th for the 4x400m, in Asian Rankings for the year 2020. They recorded a performance of 48.51s and 4:05.17s respectively to achieve this feat. Teams representing the Forces and Universities from Japan, China, Vietnam, Korea, Taipei, Thailand, India and Iran were ranked above the Gateway Team. The Gateway Girls team was the only junior team that was in this ranking. The record breaking team included Shelinda Jansen, Sadeepa Henderson, Filzah Farouk, and Dahamya Liyanage. In 2018, Shelinda Jansen who clocked 24.07 secs at the 200m Youth Olympics held in Argentina, was recognised to be the fastest female athlete in Asia in her age group and the 9th in the world. Shelinda’s achievement was the 3rd best performance in Sri Lankan junior athletics history, behind Susanthika Jayasinghe and Damayanthi Dharsha. Only 3 school teams have recorded a timing below 49s in the 4x100m in the history of Sri Lanka. Besides the victorious team of Gateway in 2020, they include the teams from Gateway College Colombo and St. Joseph’s College Kegalle who achieved this feat in 2012. Non-academic Sri Lanka Model United Nations 2020 The 13th session of the Sri Lanka Model United Nations Conference was held on 12th and 13th September. The conference was a memorable one to all who participated, as the entire conference was conducted virtually, for the very first time. Even though SLMUN online presented a new challenge, over 400 delegates from 28 leading schools demonstrated great adaptability and diplomatic finesse. Gateway students proved their unmatched abilities as they engaged with the theme “A World of Conflict” to discuss some of the most pressing international issues and develop comprehensive resolutions. SLMUN concluded with a triumphant victory for Gateway, having secured a total of 17 awards across a range of diverse committees, with 6 Best Delegate awards. Non-academic Gateway College Colombo Victorious in The First Ever “Distanced Shakespeare” Competition The students of the Drama Clubs of Gateway College Colombo and Gateway College Kandy, performed well in the “Distanced Star performers Shakespeare” – a virtual Shakespeare Drama Competition, which was held live online, on Sunday, 16 August 2020. Silent Hands Productions, in collaboration with PodHub, made it possible to revive the legacy of the bard. Distanced Shakespeare, the first of its kind to be held in Sri Lanka, was a novel adventure as it required the participants to recreate the magic of William Shakespeare, by dramatising carefully selected play extracts, on the digital platform of video conferencing, via a Zoom meeting. Gateway College Colombo as well as Gateway College Kandy, entered the category for School Participants with their respective casts, offering their unique interpretations of the excerpts from Henry VIII, with its particular political relevance to modern times. The polished performances by all participants in the competition were praised by the esteemed judges, Mr Indu Dharmasena, Mr Mohamed Adamaly, and Mr Sanith Wijeratne. Non-academic Festival Championship at “Star Wars to Shakespeare” Gateway College Colombo won the Drama Championship that was organised by the Drama Society of Trinity College Kandy. “Star Wars to Shakespeare”, a festival of performances of extracts from musical theatre productions, stage plays, movies, television series, and original skits, was held on the 17 and 18 December 2020. This event, which witnessed the participation of several leading state, private and international schools in the country, was an exciting novelty, as it was a competition of dramatic performances delivered on the popular digital platform of Zoom. The Gateway College Colombo Team secured the Festival Championship with an average overall score of 77.67%, while Gateway College Dehiwala and Gateway College Kandy followed closely with their own accomplishments. Non-academic Gateway Regional Robotics Competition 2020 in Kandy In an endeavour to promote STEAM Education with an activity-based approach, where science, technology, engineering, arts, and Star performers mathematics are integrated to harness student inquiry, dialogue, creativity, and critical thinking, Gateway has launched a series of Activity Days and Regional Robotics Competitions throughout the country. Regional Robotics Competition was organised in collaboration with Colombo Hilton Kids Club and the Grand Kandyan, to encourage children from the Central Province to participate in an exploration platform. The Robotics Competition conducted by Gateway School of Computing in collaboration with My STEM Labs India, had eager participation from many schools in the region. The competition was organised to promote Robotics and STEM education in the country, in an interactive competitive platform, by providing students with hands-on experience to design and build programmable robots that can complete an assigned task.
