Non-academic Co-curricular Colombo Model United Nations 2019 Following three days of strenuous debate, students from Gateway College emerged victorious, clinching a number of prestigious awards across several committees, at the 25th session of the Colombo Model United Nations (COMUN) conference. Held on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd of March, the Colombo Model United Nations witnessed the participation and fierce competition among several leading schools from all parts of the country. Students from Gateway College dominated in most committees, winning several awards. Students of Gateway College remain a force to reckon with in the Sri Lankan Model UN arena, performing exceptionally well both nationally and internationally. The MUN club of Gateway College, aptly supported by the teachers in charge and the alumni, continues to go from strength to strength with the passing of each conference. Non-academic National Youth Diplomacy Model United Nations 2019 Gateway College once again emerged victorious at the 4th annual session of the National Youth Diplomacy Model United Nations Conference that took place on the 19th and 20th of October 2019. The delegates of Gateway College proved themselves once again, showcasing their unparalleled aptitude by securing the majority of the awards through their collective dedication and commitment. NYMUN 2019 concluded with Gateway College bringing home a grand total of 20 Awards. Gateway College Colombo won the shield awarded for the Best Delegation, for the third consecutive year. Non-academic Film Fly Australia Experience is a video competition “Film Fly Australia Experience” is a video competition to explore the theme of improving the quality of life through humanitarian engineering and entrepreneurship. Organised by The Australian Trade and Investment Commission, Australian Government, the competition is open to students between Grades 9 and 12 from schools across South Asia. The themes for Sri Lanka this year were Artificial Intelligence, and UN Sustainability Goals. The winning team comprising two students and a teacher is awarded a fully sponsored study tour for a week in a leading Australian University. Spearheaded by the school’s Broadcasting Unit, the students of Gateway College Dehiwala, presented their videos under both themes. Savin Vindiv de Alwis and Abdul Aziz Fauzul Ameer were adjudged winners for their video on UN Sustainability Goals, and along with their teacher in charge, visited the University of Wollongong this June. Pulindu Iddawela and Senal Silva who presented their video on Artificial Intelligence were adjudged runners up. Both videos were commended highly by Austrade for being creative, informative and artistic. Achievements Student Names/Individual Contribution Achievement Gold Medal in the Junior category Turanja Senethmi, Kehan Suriyarachchi Star performers Young Computer Scientist Award The federation of Information Technology Industry, Sri Lanka and the National Organisation representing the software Industry in Sri Lanka have been organising the Young Computer Scientist award for the last 15 years. This competition is modelled on the Asia Pacific ICT award and the winners receive a sponsorship to attend this event. The competition aims to expose the computing talents of our schoolchildren at early ages, encourage them to develop their talents and earn recognition for their innovation. This year our students received 27 Merits, two Bronze, four Silver and two Gold awards. Their Indian Folk Dance consisted of the group moving in circles to measure steps, marking time by sticks called Dandiya. The sticks of the dance represent the sword of Durga. This form of dance is a special feature of the Navratri Festival. The Navratri Festival is celebrated to pay homage to the nine incarnations of Mata Ambe, the Mother Goddess. This is the fifth consecutive year the Community Service Club received an Award from Edexcel Pearson for their benevolent activities. This year’s project carried out by the CS Club was “Learning is the start, a book is the spark”. Students of Gateway College Kandy helped C W W Kannangara Vidyalaya, Hantane, to improve the quality of their education through various fundraising activities and hard work. They not only managed to give the students of the school a proper library equipped with shelves and books, but also a small garden for the school children to enjoy themselves in.
