ABOUT SUGAM KARNATICA Sugam Karnatica is an arts education institution formed in 2003, which provides formal and non-formal Indian arts and culture programmes. It also functions as the Community ACE (Arts Centre of Excellence) which provides children with a vehicle to express their background and heritage. Set in its goal to provide a platform for young people to obtain quality and affordable sustainable education with creativity to contribute in developing an innovative nation, Sugam Karnatica aims to promote various cultural art forms such as music, drama and dance, and finds ways to fuse them in today’s advanced world of technology and modernization. We strongly believe that the arts should not be seen as ‘extra- curricular’ activities but instead be seen as a crucial tool for a holistic existence which will help blossom the full potential of individuals and communities. Empowerment of children through the arts develops them to be creative, unique individuals – and that is something that cannot, and should not, be taken away from them. We at Sugam Karnatica strongly believe that the arts are not superfluous to society; instead it is the underlying force that propels it forward. Arts and culture are not only notable, but also crucial tools for a holistic existence, and we at Sugam Karnatica are passionate about leading the way in providing education in arts and culture for the constantly evolving new generation of this country. Sugam Karnatica is an initiative of Sugam Culture & Heritage Foundation, a non profit organisation which focuses on societal transformation through arts and culture. MESSAGE FROM PROJECT DIRECTOR I joined Samarpanam in 2009 as a participant. I was nothing more than a typical 13-year-old teenager, excited to perform on stage with my friends from camp. Despite being chosen as a facilitator after three years, and then joining the ranks of the committee members later, I never imagined that I would one day be the person who would lead and run this project. And just like that, I was chosen as the Project Director for Sugam Samarpanam 2018, 2019 followed by this year 2022. I was surprised that I have been given such a huge role and responsibility. And then came fear. There was also a lot of expectations from how well the programme has been carried over for the past 15 years. However, over the past few months, I was surprised that I have been given such a huge role and responsibility. And then came fear. There was also a lot of expectations from how well the programme has been carried over for the past 15 years. However, over the past few months, I have gained nothing but confidence and excitement. This came after the enormous amount of support and encouragement I had gained from my friends and Sugam Family. Samarpanam has always been something I look forward to every year. I have made so many wonderful memories and built amazing friendships from my time as a participant. I also learnt many important values that I still live by to date. This being my third year as the Project Director, I want to contribute back to the programme by ensuring that I deliver nothing less than spectacular and to make it the best Samarpanam yet. More so, this year’s Samarpanam is being showcased after an absence of two years due to the pandemic which motivates me in giving it my best! This year’s theme is “krsna’. It focuses on the beautiful blue boy as a toddler, child and teenager. I believe that this theme is an exciting way to educate the younger generation about our own Super Hero, Lord Krishna. The two weeks camp has definitely brought out the best in the participants. This year, being a year where SOPs take precedence over everything else, it was a challenge for my team and I to make sure that the participants were always masked and sanitised regularly to ensure their safety at all times. Nevertheless, we managed the participants well with little to no issues at all, SOP and all. That being said, I look forward to the performance that the participants have tirelessly rehearsed and will be showcasing to present to our esteemed audience. I wish to express my gratitude to the various groups of people who have contributed a lot to the success of this programme. First and foremost, our advisors - my 3 akkas who are the founders of this programme, the parents and participants of Sugam Samarpanam 2022, our sponsors who have contributed for lunch and tea, my hardworking camp facilitators, committee members and production crew; as well as everyone who has played a significant role in ensuring the success of Sugam Samarpanam 2022 - krsna. MESSAGE FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR It gives me immense pleasure to welcome you to the 33rd Sugam Samarpanam programme. The last two years left a void to all the Samarpanam enthusiasts. Many lamented, many missed their roles as facis and many have passed the age to be part of it. Sugam Samarpanam started in 1988, when me and sisters and our cousins, in total 7 of us, decided to come up with a show in our home during the December school holidays. The programme was born out of boredom. On the 2nd year, we named the programme \"The Annual Krishna Festival\". Year after year, we started having more and more guests coming over to our living room to watch us perform. Our parents, uncles, aunts, all were conduit to entertaining the guests whom we invited with hand made cards. Backdrops and lightings were done by uncles, we used blankets as curtains and food cooked by the ladies of the home. Our participants numbers increased comprising relatives and friends and so did our guests. We had moee than 150 people coming for the shows! It was such a great experience. We grew up and as we entered university, we decided we needed younger children in the programme. In 2003, as Sugam Karnatica was set up, we merged Samarpanam under its banner. The first year, we had 50 kids and then on for the last 17 years, we have had 150 to 200 kids participate in this programme. Various themes, various memories. This year, we have come a full circle. After the 2 year break, we are back to 50! How glad we were went we hit the 50 mark as we were unsure if people would join the programme due to the rising number of cases. But alas, here we are today. We tweaked the script to fit a size of 50 and were determined to make it happen. My sincere thanks to the participants and parents who abided all SOPs, to the amazing team of our Facilitators and to the small yet committed team of Committee members who came forth to keep this tradition alive. Sugam Samarpanam will march on... to create memories for many many more children in the years to come.... Sujietra PG
