5 Misconceptions About Fire

Myth #1 When a fire breaks out, the fire itself causes the most casualties Fact #1 Smoke are actually the major cause of fire related deaths. The smoke from a fire can be toxic because of carbon monoxide. and can spread within minutes. Therefore, the carbon monoxide from the smoke of a fire, can cause people to choke or become disoriented after they breathe it in.

Myth #2 Any type of Fire Extinguisher Will Put Out Flames Fact #2 There are four classes of fire extinguishers and each will put out a certain type of fire. Class A works on ordinary combustibles like paper or wood. Class B is to be used on liquids that are flammable like oil, grease or gas. Class C is to be used on electrical fires. Class D is used for other flammable materials.

Myth #3 Fire doesn't spread very quickly, so there's no need to escape right away when the fire alarms go off. Fact #3 Even a small flame can spread quickly and turn into massive fires under minutes, most especially if there are flammable materials around. There is no slowing down of fire until it is completely distinguished.

Myth #4 If the smoke alarm goes off then there's no fire yet, just smoke. Fact #4 The fire has generally started when ypu already hear the smoke alarm. In some cases, some smke detectors are able to detect a fire early. In this kind of events, let's not have the thinking that the fire isn't that big yet or has not begun to spread. Always take a smoke alarm as a sign to get out or grab the fire extinguisher.

Myth #5 If one fire sprinkler goes off then all of them will activate shorty after. Fact #5 It is not true that if one fire sprinkler goes off then all of them will activate shortly after. Fire sprinklers will only activate in the room that detects a fire. The first sprinkler to react is the one that's closest to the fire and in most cases the fire can be extinguished by just one sprinkler.
