#My2cents The pieces to my puzzle( MY LIFE)! Why do we try to put an end piece to the puzzle in the middle of the puzzle? That is not your place.… FACE IT It’s not going to fit… we waste too much time trying to give people more than they deserve making them more important than they are. Now I know that we need all the pieces for the puzzle to be complete... but its time out for the get in where you fit in. No, the “new new” is Get where you belong. Stop making it about them! It’s about you and it’s ok for it to be about you. Because when you cry it’s your tears that are falling, and when you hurt it’s you’re feeling that are hurt. So, when you look at the middle of the puzzle it should consist of someone that cares about your wellbeing!!! Someone you can count on in times of need, someone who’s got your back and you know this without hesitation. They will be there for you and yours! That’s who should be in the middle! Not the person you have to chase down to love you .. not the person that you have shown more of your Love, Understanding, and Forgiveness. Not the person who clearly doesn’t hold you in the same regard. So, it’s time to be honest with ourselves. Who have we put in the wrong space? Time to move you out of the way and make room for the piece that belongs in the middle of my puzzle. If you belong in my puzzle(My Life) great ! But if you think you are going to demand a place that is not for you then my advice…. In the words of Martin Lawrence is, “Get the steppin”. Rev. Dr. Sonja Wright-Smith is the proud daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Shelly Lee, Jr. (and the late Minister Lillie) of Thomasville, Ga. She is the loving wife of Deacon Donnie Smith, Sr. for 20 years this year and was blessed with a blended family of four beautiful children and nine wonderful grandchildren. She grew up as an active member in her home church at Willow Head MB Church, where she served as the President of the MD Usher Board, Church Secretary, and the Secretary of the SB Gospel Choir until relocating to the Metro-Atlanta area. She has an AAS/BS from Valdosta State University (1994), a Master of Science in Human Services from Capella University (2005), and a Master of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling from Thomas University (2008). Rev. Smith completed all but a dissertation for her Doctoral in Community Counseling at Capella University in 2013. With all her activities, accomplishments, and accolades (albeit worthy), she realized her life did not honor God. At that time, she repented of her sins, rededicated her life to the Lord, and became a student of the Word of God. We all love and hate Internet Celebrity Stylist & Relationship Guru Kevin Samuels. The brother definitely drops statistics and some facts about what women want, need, and the complexities of dating in the Black community. He is known for his harsh and blunt approach, and many believe he is intentionally humiliating women. Ishine does not support the abuse of people especially women for gain. However, social media enjoys watching this female degradation coming from Kevin Samuels. That’s why I said love and hate. In a short amount of time, he coined the infamous term “High-Value Men”. HVM, according to Samuels, are financially high-earning men who consistently hit the 6 figure a year mark and higher for up to 5 years straight. One of his popular “perspectives” on relationships includes the thought that ALL women will submit to a “High Earning Man” vs. a regular earning man. I'm not going to do a bible lesson, however, in this context, he believes “submit” means “respect”. And all men want respect, right? In light of the recent viral video of the 2nd richest man in the world, Jeff Bezos, and his girlfriend Laura Sanchez losing her composure over the very handsome and less rich, Leonardo DiCaprio, I’d like to pose a different perspective. This short video, which accumulated 10 million views in minutes, captured Sanchez openly flirting with A-List Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio. She gropes Leo in plain view for millions to see. She can’t even control herself and her actions around DiCaprio which is visibly upsetting her boyfriend Jeff Bezos whose net worth hovers between $175- $200 billion dollars. So now, I challenge Kevin Samuel's statement that ALL women automatically submit to “High Earning Men”. Jeff Bezos is one of the highest-earning men in the world and his girlfriend is seen on camera flirting with another man. This was the opposite of respect, it was embarrassing, rude and dishonoring. She did not submit to his heart, thoughts, or emotions in any way. There are so many other cases of high profile, wealthy and/or famous men being disrespected by their wives or significant others. Also, it’s fair to say that there are lower and middle income-earning men whose wives dote over them and truly respect them. As I climb the ladder of success, I can say I am one of those men.
The Right Perspective: Money, status, fame, and fortune don’t automatically warrant a woman to submit to a man. Sure, it helps, but it’s definitely not a guarantee. Men, our job as husbands is to love our wives. Love consists of kindness, gentleness, apologies, value, honor, and faithfulness. A respectful wife will have a soft, compassionate, forgiving, and honorable heart for GOD which empowers her to respect her man. Submission comes from a healed heart posture, and it goes both ways. If your posture is corrupt towards GOD and your spouse, then eventually their heart will be corrupt toward you. Submission, given out of duty or acting sweet for material gain and benefits isn’t submission, it’s manipulation. This ugly character flaw will reveal itself eventually in the relationship regardless of a man’s financial status. All men seek and desire “Respect” from their wives, but they must give love to get respect. It does not start or end with money. My childhood memories were when my great uncles and aunts would visit us in South Georgia. I was fascinated by the cars they drove down in and the stylish clothes they wore. The car back in the day were the Cadillac and I thought they were so rich. Lots of laughter, singing, telling jokes, telling lies and so much love for each other, not to mention home cooked Christmas foods. I would sit back and listen. How I missed those days. We would dance to all the greatest hits during that time and yes, we had a record player. Family, Fun, Love and Laughter is what I remember. Travel is back and the airports are full during the holiday seasons. We still have to practice Covid 19 protocol.
