Foggy Faith Tony’s top tips Nikon D600, 50mm lens, Be courteous 1/80sec at f/5.6, ISO 200 Tony rarely gets stopped by security, but if he does he remains polite – if you get defensive and start telling people your rights, it rarely ends well. Sometimes they will say you need a permit, in which case simply ask where you can get one from! Pick a day Don’t let the weather dictate when you go out – pick a day, check the conditions and then decide what to shoot. If it’s a bright, blue-sky day then consider infrared, if there are fast-moving clouds, then try experimenting with filters and long exposures. Work with what you get given. Accept human behaviour Including people in the frame requires patience. If your camera is on a tripod, people will often avoid walking in front of the camera out of politeness! On the flip side, sometimes people will act up in front of the camera – it’s all part of the process. Look around you Tony enjoys photographing wildlife but living in London he finds his options are limited. Sometimes you’re better off concentrating on what’s directly around you – in this case, architecture. The more you look, the more you’ll start noticing details. Tell a story Notice how people interact with the architecture around them and try to tell a story. Buildings are designed for people to use, so it can help to include a human element – doing so can provide a sense of scale. it’s nice to include a human element,’ he Re-Lamp says. But waiting for the right person to come along can be frustrating. ‘Often you’re just looking and hoping that they won’t see you or pay you any attention,’ he says. ‘You have to be patient.’ The figures are so perfectly placed that I can’t help wondering if they’ve been directed. ‘No, no,’ says Tony. ‘I’m quite a shy person and I wouldn’t do that. They are all candid pictures. If you’re setting things up, asking someone to behave in a certain way, then it’s not street photography for me, it’s just a staged image.’ www.amateurphotographer.co.u4k f8e807c-deee-4695-9947-12bfa4c06385 53

Technique INFRARED David Clapp Landscape photographer David Clapp is an infrared nut and has been shooting in the medium for the past 12 years. David is renowned in the photography industry for his landscape images that cover locations from Dartmoor in the UK to Death Valley in California, USA. KIT LIST Camera David has upgraded from his previous Canon EOS 6D with a 665 nanometer conversion (this mixes the visible red spectrum to the infrared spectrum) to his mirrorless Canon EOS RP with a full-spectrum set-up. A full-spectrum camera conversion is an adaptation where the internal IR cut filter is taken out, and replaced with a clear filter. This in turn makes the camera sensitive to UV, visible, and IR light. Adapter RF to EF David has a Canon Drop-In Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R that means he can shoot on his Canon EOS RP using his EF lenses. This adapter has a drop-in filter slot as well. Filters David uses a 590nm filter and a 665nm filter made by Kolari Vision (kolarivision. com). These filters work using a slot into the special RF/ EF adapter (mentioned above). Top tip Fine-tune with B&W Mixer panel Even though we’re removing the colour, it can still play a vital role in the look of our monochrome image. The Black and White Mixer panel has eight sliders that let you control the brightness of different colour ranges. We can use these to, for example, darken down the blues to make a sky more dramatic, or lift reds and oranges to make skin tones brighter. You can use the sliders but it’s easier to grab the target tool and then drag left/right over parts of the image. Not only is this more intuitive, it also allows you to affect several sliders at once, which leads to more-natural- looking shifts in brightness. ‘Photoshop’s non-destructive workflow gives you the freedom to experiment with AFTER different edits’ 4 Burn the shadows 5 Dodge the highlights 6 Add local contrast Open the image into Photoshop for dodging Next we can switch to the Dodge tool (or hold Adjustment Layers are ideal for making local and burning, then duplicate your layer with Alt to temporarily switch) and paint to lighten adjustments. Meanwhile, for those who want rapid shooting with continuous AF, this camera really does offer some unique features, including Pro Capture and a blackout-free viewfinder. The improvement in weather-sealing also gives the OM-1 real appeal when you want a camera that can be used in all conditions. For fans of smaller mirrorless camera systems, the OM-1 offers a really compelling option, particularly when you factor in the vast choice of compact Micro Four Thirds lenses available for it. By sticking with Micro Four Thirds, OMDS has been able to create a relatively compact, weather-sealed camera system. Yes, full-frame mirrorless cameras are also quite compact, but are the lenses? And if you want high speed, you’re looking at a significantly larger, and more expensive system. So at £2,000 body only, the OM-1 offers a competitive option. Without doubt, the OM System OM-1 is the best Micro Four Thirds camera currently available. It goes well beyond what you would expect from a £2,000 camera in terms of subject-detection AF, high-speed performance, and the sheer number of useful shooting features available.
