The organization provides services in schools, from curriculum to safe rooms to counseling, that help children deal with trauma—because it is traumatic to witness violence in your own home, the place you’re supposed to feel the most understood and loved. It’s important for these kids to know there’s a safe path out of where they are. We’ve partnered with the organization [on our fall tour]. We autographed guitars and put them up for sale—all that money goes right to them—and we do what we can to make people aware of the good they do. You can’t live without hope, and there are so many kids out there who feel scared, alone and vulnerable. The Greatest Beer Run Ever (in theaters and streaming on Apple TV+ Sept. 30) is based on Donohue’s 2020 memoir. “It’s one of those unbelievable real-life scenarios that you just can’t believe a guy got himself into,” says Efron, 34. “It’s a beautiful story about human nature, love and a really difficult war and time in history.” Donohue went on to work in construction and as a union official. He now lives in Florida with his wife, Theresa, and is a proud grandpa of seven. He admits he’d “never heard of” the High School Musical and Greatest Showman star. But the two men forged a friend- ship. “There’s an incredible amount of innocence and bravery and honor in what he accomplished,” Efron says of Donohue. “I couldn’t ask for a better character to play.” They chatted with People about learning from each other and taking on challenges.
