This is how I always remember arriving in Israel, often known as ‘the Holy Land’, or ‘the Promised Land’, for its sacred, biblical history. It’s a place I have visited for summer holidays throughout my life. Raised by an Ashkenazi mother and an Israeli father, my connection to the world’s only Jewish state is both personal and spiritual. No trip to Israel would be complete without a visit to its holiest (and most fought-over) city, Jerusalem. Exploring its limestone streets feels like stepping back in time. Here, all the spirituality of the Levant combines; you can listen to the call to prayer at the Al-Aqsa Mosque while Christian worshippers make their way to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Meanwhile, Jews from all over the world gather at our holiest site, the remaining ruins of our destroyed temple, known as the Western Wall. After my beloved grandmother died, I took a message for her and pushed it into a crack in the wall to join PHOTOGRAPHY: GETTY thousands of other prayers and wishes, and felt a deep sense of peace. It has been five years since I last set foot in Israel and my heart yearns for it. But this summer, I’ve booked my ticket and I await the walk through Ben Gurion Airport, knowing I’ll soon be greeted by sauna-like heat on the other side.
